While studies have demonstrated concept formation in animals, only humans are known to label concepts to use them in mental simulations or predictions. To investigate whether other animals use labels comparably, we studied cross-modal, individual recognition in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) that use signature whistles as labels for conspecifics in their own communication. First, we tested whether dolphins could use gustatory stimuli and found that they could distinguish between water and urine samples, as well as between urine from familiar and unfamiliar individuals. Then, we paired playbacks of signature whistles of known animals with urine samples from either the same …

Water deficit currently acts as one of the largest limiting factors for agricultural productivity worldwide. Additionally, limitation by water scarcity is projected to continue in the future with the further onset of effects of global climate change. As a result, it is critical to develop or breed for crops that have increased water use efficiency and that are more capable of coping with water scarce conditions. However, increased intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE) typically brings a trade-off with CO2 assimilation as all gas exchange is mediated by stomata, through which CO2 enters the leaf while water vapor exits. …

2021 Financial Analysis Summary, Tina N. Barrett

Cornhusker Economics

While the 2021 Average Farm Financial Data summary is not complete yet, we have enough information to start drawing some conclusions about what the numbers mean for farmers and ranchers in Nebraska. The conclusions that can be made are not only on the 2021 statistics but also on how 2021 will supply a boost to the financial health of those operations for 2022 and beyond. The preliminary average net farm income looks to be the highest recorded in the history of our data, dating back to 1976. Many factors combined to make 2021 a fortifying year for many Nebraska Producers. …

Background:

Consuming livemicrobes in foods may benefit human health. Live microbe estimates have not previously been associated with individual foods in dietary databases.

Objectives:

We aimed to estimate intake of live microbes in US children (aged 2–18 y) and adults (≥19 y) (n = 74,466; 51.2% female).

Methods:

Using cross-sectional data from the NHANES (2001–2018), experts assigned foods an estimated level of live microbes per gram [low (Lo), <104 CFU/g; medium (Med), 104–107 CFU/g; or high (Hi), >107 CFU/g]. Probiotic dietary supplements were also assessed. The mean intake of each live microbe …

Elevated Substitution Rates Among Wolbachia-Infected Mosquito Species Results In Apparent Phylogenetic Discordance., James E. Russell, Michael Saum, Rebekah Williams May 2022

Elevated Substitution Rates Among Wolbachia-Infected Mosquito Species Results In Apparent Phylogenetic Discordance., James E. Russell, Michael Saum, Rebekah Williams

Georgia Journal of Science

As one of the most widely distributed bacterial cytoplasmic symbionts on earth, Wolbachia pipientis Hertig serves as a model organism for the understanding of host-symbiont interactions. Many mosquito species are infected with Wolbachia strains that induce a form of reproductive manipulation called cytoplasmic incompatibility, in which infected females gain a reproductive advantage over uninfected females in mixed infection populations. The selective advantage of cytoplasmic incompatibility often results in a population sweep of Wolbachia and co-transmitted mitochondrial genomes. Mitochondrial evolution and phylogenetic inferences drawn from mitochondrial gene sequences are thus potentially compromised by reproductive manipulating symbionts, like Wolbachia. Our initial …

Exploring Glycolysis-Mediated Metabolic Stress And Mitigation Strategies In The Cns Through Glycation-Lowering Therapy, Cavan Patterson May 2022

Exploring Glycolysis-Mediated Metabolic Stress And Mitigation Strategies In The Cns Through Glycation-Lowering Therapy, Cavan Patterson

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Biological Sciences Master's Theses

In the aging brain, cells undergo stress, inflammation, loss of replicative ability and in some cases cell death. Hyperglycemic conditions have been shown to exacerbate these effects. Recent literature has begun to regard Alzheimer’s Disease as a “Type 3 Diabetes Mellitus,” implicating loss of insulin sensitivity and increased oxidative stress as contributing factors. Hyperglycemic conditions can overwhelm the cellular capacity to detoxify harmful glycolytic byproducts such as methylglyoxal (MGO). Intact MGO reacts readily with nearby proteins or lipids to form Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs), of which the accumulation over time has been linked to many age-associated pathologies. Our lab …

Principal Response Curve Analysis Of Arthropod Community Abundance Data With Sparse Subsets, Changjian Jiang, C. R. Brown, P. Asiimwe, Chen Meng, Adam W. Schapaugh

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture and Natural Resources

Principal response curve (PRC) analysis was applied to an assessment of the ecological impact of the genetically-modified (GM), insect-resistant, cotton MON 88702 on predatory Hemiptera communities in the field. The field community was represented by ten taxa collected ten times across the season at six sites, in which individual taxa were not observed in at least 25% of the time (unique site x collection combinations). These complete absences and those nearly so, called sparse subsets of the data in this investigation, were the result of geoclimatic and seasonal variations, which are both independent of the treatment effect for which the …

The Relationship Between Perceived Stress And Disordered Eating In Undergraduate Students During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Caroline G. Martin May 2022

The Relationship Between Perceived Stress And Disordered Eating In Undergraduate Students During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Caroline G. Martin

Gettysburg College Headquarters

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected and imposed challenges on nearly everyone, including college students. Despite their already stressful situations, previous research has demonstrated increased stress levels among college students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, research has also shown an increase in disordered eating for college students during the pandemic. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between both perceived stress and disordered eating during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, the present study used a correlational design to investigate a potential association between perceived stress and disordered eating among undergraduate college students during the COVID-19 pandemic. By administering the EAT-26, the CSSEC, …

Handling Non-Detects With Imputation In A Nested Design: A Simulation Study, Rose Adjei, John R. Stevens May 2022

Handling Non-Detects With Imputation In A Nested Design: A Simulation Study, Rose Adjei, John R. Stevens

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture and Natural Resources

In this paper, a simulation study was conducted to assess whether it is ideal to address the issue of non-detects in data using a traditional substitution approach for non-detects, imputation, or a non-imputation based approach. Simulated data used were simple nested designs motivated by a real-life data in a study of bumble bee activity in a commercial cherry orchard by Kuivila et al. (2021). The simulated data were generated at different thresholds or censoring levels and at different effect sizes. For each simulated data, seven popular existing techniques to handle non-detects were applied: (i) Zero substitution, (ii) Substitution with half …

Overview Of Optimal Experimental Design And A Survey Of Its Expanse In Application To Agricultural Studies, Stephen J. Walsh May 2022

Overview Of Optimal Experimental Design And A Survey Of Its Expanse In Application To Agricultural Studies, Stephen J. Walsh

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture and Natural Resources

Optimal Design of Experiments is currently recognized as the modern dominant approach to planning experiments in industrial engineering and manufacturing applications. This approach to design has gained traction among practitioners in the last two decades on two-fronts: 1) optimal designs are the result of a complicated optimization calculation and recent advances in both computing efficiency and algorithms have enabled this approach in real time for practitioners, and 2) such designs are now popular because they allow the researcher to ‘design for the experiment’ by working constraints, cost, number of experiments, and the model of the intended post-hoc data analysis into …

Techniques To Analyze The Pathophysiology Of Aging From Induced Senescence And Sod2 Loss, Asia Davis-Castillo May 2022

Techniques To Analyze The Pathophysiology Of Aging From Induced Senescence And Sod2 Loss, Asia Davis-Castillo

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Biological Sciences Master's Theses

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Cardiac function declines with age, and promotes a number of age-related disorders, including atrial fibrillation and heart failure. Mitochondrial oxidative stress has long been suspected as a primary driver of aging pathology in multiple tissues, including the heart and brain. We used several phenotypic assays to characterize chemically-induced accelerated cardiac aging, as well as two transgenic knockout models for heart and brain specific loss of superoxide dismutase (SOD2), a mitochondrial antioxidant protein.

We first accelerated aging in mice by treating with doxorubicin (DOXO), a chemotherapeutic drug. One group …

Small Molecule Compound With Indole Moiety Protects Against Alzheimer’S Disease Pathology In C. Elegans And Mammalian Cell Culture Models, Elena Battistoni

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Biological Sciences Master's Theses

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease and the leading cause of dementia in the elderly. In 2020, an estimated 5.8 million Americans 65 and older were living with Alzheimer's dementia1. Currently, the disease has no cure, and extensive research continues to explore potential treatments. Because the pathogenesis of AD has been attributed, at least in part, to the extracellular aggregation and toxicity of the amyloid beta (Aβ) protein in the brain, discovering therapeutics that target this protein remains of interest. However, many past drug development programs and clinical trials that target Aβ aggregates have been unsuccessful. …

Exploring The Diet Dependent Role Of Oxidation Resistance 1 In Regulating Retromer Function, Enrique Carrera May 2022

Exploring The Diet Dependent Role Of Oxidation Resistance 1 In Regulating Retromer Function, Enrique Carrera

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Biological Sciences Master's Theses

Aging has been identified as a significant risk factor to the development of several diseases, such as neurodegeneration1. One of the most common age-related neurodegenerative diseases is Alzheimer’s Disease (AD)2, which causes cognitive decline. Current treatments for AD attempt to mitigate its symptoms or delay its onset3–5. One method that has shown promise not only for the treatment of AD, but also for increasing lifespan and healthspan overall is dietary restriction (DR)6, but the mechanisms by which DR mediates these effects remains unclear7,8. We have identified the human gene Oxidation …

Deep Learning Modeling M6a Deposition Reveals The Importance Of Downstream Cis-Element Sequences., Zhiyuan Luo, Jiacheng Zhang, Jingyi Fei, Shengdong Ke

Faculty Research 2022

The N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification is deposited to nascent transcripts on chromatin, but its site-specificity mechanism is mostly unknown. Here we model the m6A deposition to pre-mRNA by iM6A (intelligent m6A), a deep learning method, demonstrating that the site-specific m6A methylation is primarily determined by the flanking nucleotide sequences. iM6A accurately models the m6A deposition (AUROC = 0.99) and uncovers surprisingly that the cis-elements regulating the m6A deposition preferentially reside within the 50 nt downstream of the m6A sites. The m6A enhancers mostly …

Faculty Research 2022

Modulation of immune function at the tumor site could improve patient outcomes. Here, we analyze patient samples of metastatic melanoma, a tumor responsive to T cell-based therapies, and find that tumor-infiltrating T cells are primarily juxtaposed to CD14+ monocytes/macrophages rather than melanoma cells. Using immunofluorescence-guided laser capture microdissection, we analyze transcriptomes of CD3+ T cells, CD14 + monocytes/macrophages, and melanoma cells in non-dissociated tissue. Stromal CD14+ cells display a specific transcriptional signature distinct from CD14+ cells within tumor nests. This signature contains LY75, a gene linked with antigen capture and regulation of tolerance and immunity in …

Advanced Science Research Center

Skeletal stem cells (SSCs, or mesenchymal stromal cells typically referred to as mesenchymal stem cells from the bone marrow) are a dynamic progenitor population that can enter quiescence, self-renew or differentiate depending on regenerative demand and cues from their niche environment. However, ex vivo, in culture, they are grown typically on hard polystyrene surfaces, and this leads to rapid loss of the SSC phenotype. While materials are being developed that can control SSC growth and differentiation, very few examples of dynamic interfaces that reflect the plastic nature of the stem cells have, to date, been developed. Achieving such interfaces is …
