Two Essays In Agriculture Trade And Food Security: 1. Decomposing The Impact Of Gmo Regulation On Bilateral Trade: An Application To Corn Trade; 2. Can Food-Security Policies In Tunisia Be Better Targeted?, Mohamed Amine Hedoui

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

This dissertation is composed of two essays on agricultural trade and food security. The first chapter is entitled “Decomposing the GMO regulation impact on bilateral trade.” The essay analyses the complex impact of GMO regulations among countries on bilateral trade with a focus on GMO approvals. Three effects impact bilateral trade flows between trade partners: productivity enhancements in the source country, sorting cost from bilateral dissimilarity in regulations, and stringency impact on import demand. We estimate the model using a panel dataset of corn trade and two econometric approaches (PPML, Heckman sample-selection). We find that GMO laxity in production of …

Convolutional Neural Network-Based Gene Prediction Using Buffalograss As A Model System, Michael Morikone Nov 2023

Convolutional Neural Network-Based Gene Prediction Using Buffalograss As A Model System, Michael Morikone

Complex Biosystems Program: Dissertations and Student Research

The task of gene prediction has been largely stagnant in algorithmic improvements compared to when algorithms were first developed for predicting genes thirty years ago. Rather than iteratively improving the underlying algorithms in gene prediction tools by utilizing better performing models, most current approaches update existing tools through incorporating increasing amounts of extrinsic data to improve gene prediction performance. The traditional method of predicting genes is done using Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). These HMMs are constrained by having strict assumptions made about the independence of genes that do not always hold true. To address this, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Investigating the influences of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) associated with conceptus death (CD) on day 16 of pregnancy could distinguish cows who have inferior value for fertility traits. We hypothesized that CD is associated with SNP genotypes that disrupt maternal recognition and lead to early pregnancy loss. RNA sequences from Holstein cow pregnancies (n = 15) with normal conceptuses (Norm) or CD were subjected to SNP discovery via Qiagen CLC Genomics Workbench. Selected SNP were based on previous fertility studies, differentially expressed genes within pregnancy development analyses and proximity to SNP associated with fertility traits in the Cattle QTL …

This study sought to examine the association between total and type of dietary protein (animal and plant) consumption with prevalence of T2D and IFG. Aims: To investigate the association between total intake and types (animal vs plant) of dietary protein intake and prevalence of IFG & T2D in adults. Data …

Modulation Of Chronic Allergic Contact Dermatitis Through B Cells, Sara Saeed Alhmoudi Nov 2023

Modulation Of Chronic Allergic Contact Dermatitis Through B Cells, Sara Saeed Alhmoudi

Theses

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a common inflammatory disease caused by contact with an allergen and is a T-cell-mediated type IV hypersensitivity reaction. Shortchain fatty acids (SCFAs) showed the ability to modulate immune cells in case of inflammation. Pentanoate is one of the abundant SCFA that showed therapeutic ability by inducing interleukin-10 (IL-10) secretion in lymphocytes. IL-10-producing regulatory B cells have been shown to decrease different inflammatory responses; however, the overall role of B cells in ACD is not well studied. This project aims to explore the role of B cells during chronic ACD and their modulation with the SCFA …

Foxo1 Promotes The Expression Of Canonical Wnt Target Genes In Examined Basal-Like Breast And Glioblastoma Multiforme Cancer Cells, Shania Pintor, Alma Lopez, David Flores, Brianda Lozoya, Bipul Soti, Rishi Pokhrel, Joaquin Negrete, Michael W. Persans, Robert Gilkerson, Bonnie Gunn, Megan Keniry

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Basal-like breast cancer (BBC) and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) are aggressive cancers associated with poor prognosis. BBC and GBM have stem cell-like gene expression signatures, which are in part driven by forkhead box O (FOXO) transcription factors. To gain further insight into the impact of FOXO1 in BBC, we treated BT549 cells with AS1842856 and performed RNA sequencing. AS1842856 binds to unphosphorylated FOXO1 and inhibits its ability to directly bind to DNA. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis indicated that a set of WNT pathway target genes, including lymphoid enhancer-binding factor 1 (LEF1) and transcription factor 7 (TCF7), were …

The Evolutionary Responses Of Life-History Strategies To Climatic Variability In Flowering Plants, James Boyko, Eric R. Hagen, Jeremy M. Beaulieu, Thais Vasconcelos

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

  • The evolution of annual or perennial strategies in flowering plants likely depends on a broad array of temperature and precipitation variables. Previous documented climate life-history correlations in explicit phylogenetic frameworks have been limited to certain clades and geographic regions.
  • To gain insights which generalize to multiple lineages we employ a multi-clade approach analyzing 32 groups of angiosperms across eight climatic variables. We utilize a recently developed method that accounts for the joint evolution of continuous and discrete traits to evaluate two hypotheses: annuals tend to evolve in highly seasonal regions prone to extreme heat and drought; and annuals tend to …

Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although South Africa accounts for half of the alternative meat market for the African continent, there remains a lack of information about consumer demand for plant-based and lab-cultured meat and its market potential domestically. This study reports the results of a nationwide survey of 649 South African consumers who completed a choice experiment in which they selected among conventional beef and three alternative burger patties at varying prices. Results indicate that holding prices constant and conditional on choosing a food product, 21% of the market share was estimated for plant-based meat alternatives and 38% for lab-cultured meat.
