During the summer of 1897 the writer was enabled to make, with the help of his assistants, T. H. Humpherys, A. P. Stover, and W. D. Beers, a number of experiments on the carrying capacities of irrigation ditches and canals. The funds necessary to carry on these investigations were provided by the U. S. Bulletin No. 70 - Experiments In Pork Production, Luther Foster, Lewis A. Merrill
UAES Bulletins
Pig raising in Utah has not as a rule been considered a profitable branch of the live stock industry, especially as usually practiced on the farm, and up to within the past few years the growing of more pork than was used at home was the exception, but since creameries and cheese factories have come into existence, creating a large by-product of skim milk and whey, cheap and valuable. pig foods, when properly used, the business has made a healthy growth.

UAES Bulletins
For some time past the Division of Agrostology has been conducting investigations in various parts of the United States with a view to the preservation of our native grasses, the introduction of new varieties, and the improvement of the ranges. The investigation in Texas, where the once fine ranges have been seriously injured or totally destroyed on account of the greed and carelessness of stockmen, is an important one.
In his last report, the Secretary of Agriculture recommends that provisions be made for renting the public lands, suitable for grazing purposes, to stockmen and sheepmen for a number of years. …

To this subfamily belong the giants of the family, although many species in it are of moderate or insignificant size. Here belong the "Tarantula Killers," or Pompilids, belonging to the genus Pepsis, large, brilliantly-coloured species, often with fiery red wings, or blue or black wings marked with white or red, etc., that prey upon the genuine Tarantulas and other large species of spiders.

In the CANADIAN ENTOMOLOGIST, during the year 1898, I gave a series of papers on the classification of the horntails and sawflies, representing the superfamilies SIRICOIDEA (Xylophaga) and TENTHREDINOIDEA (Phyllophaga); while the past year, 1899, I gave a classification of the entomophilous wasps, or the superfamily SPHECOIDEA (incorrectly spelt Sphegoidca). The present year, 1900, with the permission of the Editor, it is my intention to give a similar series of papers on the classification of the superfamily VESPOIDEA, a large natural group, representing the genuine fossorial wasps, the papermaking wasps, potter wasps, and the predaceous, inquilinous and parasitic wasps.

The Modern Conception Of The Structure And Classification Of Diatoms, Charles E. Bessey
Papers in Systematics and Biological Diversity
In the revision of the Bacillariaceae for Engler and Prantl's “Pflanzenfamilien," Schutt has availed himself principally of the studies of Otto Muller and has given us the first clear conception of the meaning of the diatom cell, and its relation to the diatom filament. Starting with the filament, we regard it as the typical condition, from which the unicellular diatoms have been derived by the solution of the filament and the adaptation of the separate cells to an independent life. Diatoms are thus regarded as typically filamentous algae, and are no longer to be placed among unicellular plants. Accordingly their …
