New Elementary Agriculture For Rural And Graded Schools, Charles E. Bessey, Lawrence Bruner, G. D. Swezey Jan 1903

New Elementary Agriculture For Rural And Graded Schools, Charles E. Bessey, Lawrence Bruner, G. D. Swezey

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Nebraska is an agricultural state. The products of her soil are the basis of her industries and her prosperity. The children of our great state of Nebraska should be familiar with our crops, our grains and grasses, our flowers and fruits, our trees and shrubs and weeds, our domestic animals and birds and insects. Our children should have a practical knowledge of the management of a farm, of the composition of the soil, and of the adaptability of the farm and its soil for the cultivation of certain plants and the counter effect of such plant growth upon the soil. …

Some Notes On The Bee Genus Andrena, Lawrence Bruner

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Several years ago the writer undertook to determine and lable the bees contained in the collection of insects belonging to the University of Nebraska. After some preliminary work in the way of assorting and arranging the material at hand, and securing literature with which to do the naming, it was found that the large number of the species belonging to the genus Andrena in its broad sense could only be placed by the aid of some kind of synoptic key or table. Not being able to find such an aid in our entomological literature it was decided to construct one …

A Preliminary Review Of The Birds Of Nebraska With Synopses, Lawrence Bruner, Robert H. Wolcott, Myron H. Swenk

Papers in Ornithology

In 1896, Prof. Bruner published his list entitled "Some Notes on Nebraska Birds." As a working basis for the study of the ornithology of the state it has proven invaluable and it has also been greatly in demand by people not ornithologists, who desired to "know something about our birds." That edition was exhausted some time ago and its author has been frequently urged to publish another. However, the organization of the Nebraska Ornithologists' Union and the development of ornithology in the University has led to such a rapid increase in our knowledge in the past five years that it …

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

This genus is founded on a nearly perfect skull and lower jaw in the American Museum collections (No. 2780), with associated skeletal material including five cervical vertebrae, tibia, fibula, calcaneum, astragalus, lunar, middle digit of manus, and ribs, found by the Expedition of 1897 near Hay Spring, Nebraska. Professor Henry F. Osborn has placed this material in the writer's hands for description.

Bulletin No. 80 - Irrigation Investigations In 1901, John A. Widtsoe

UAES Bulletins

The fact that the ancient and, to arid countries, indispensible art of irrigation lacks a scientific basis, is the justification of the decision taken two years ago by the officers of the Utah Experiment Station, to make irrigation the central subject of their investigations.

Sleeping Habits Of Certain Hymenoptera, Nathan Banks Dec 1902

Sleeping Habits Of Certain Hymenoptera, Nathan Banks

An

The various means by which insects rest have been but little investigated. Occasional notes have been published, but often in connection with other matter, so that it is extremely difficult to collate the recorded facts. Since the Hymenoptera are among the most assiduous, as well as the most intelligent workers, it is natural that they should exhibit some interesting habits of sleep. The idea that the bee sleeps in the flower seems to have invaded literature at an early date. And there are a number of bees that commonly do remain in flowers (such as those of cucurbits and campanulas) …

The globose or rounded head, which is never flat, oblong, and the difference in the antennae, the antennae in males being 10-jointed, in the females 13-jointed, readily separate the subfamily from the Bethylinre. The group comes quite close to the Dryininae, but in the latter the head is transverse or subquadrate, never rounded, while the antennae are 10-jointed in both sexes.
