Notes On The Wing-Color Of North American Locusts Belonging To The Sub-Family Œdipodinæ And Its Seeming Relation To Climatic Conditions., Lawrence Bruner

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

One of the many features that have been noted in the study of our North American locusts during the past ten or a dozen years is the color-variation of the wings of the different species of lo-custs of the sub-family Œdipodinæ. As all students know who have had anything to do with these insects, some have yellow, others orange, still others red, and a very few have their wings blue. While this is true, perhaps it has not been generally noted that the presence or absence of humidity seems to have some influence upon these color-variations in the different representatives …

A Preliminary Report On The Worms (Mostly Parasitic) Collected In Lakes St. Clair, In The Summer Of 1893, Henry B. Ward

Studies from the University of Nebraska Zoological Laboratory

In the work done on the fauna and flora of Lake St. Clair during the summer of 1893, the group of Vermes was entrusted to the writer. The following is submitted as a preliminary report on the ground covered, the material obtained, and the results of this branch of the work so far as they can be seen at this stage.

Excluding the Rotifera, which were studied by another member of the party, the Vermes are represented in fresh water by three great classes: the Plathelminthes (Flatworms), Nemathelminthes (Round or Threadworms), and the Annelida (Segmented-worms).

American Work On Cestodes In 1893, Henry B. Ward Jan 1893

American Work On Cestodes In 1893, Henry B. Ward

Studies from the University of Nebraska Zoological Laboratory

An important advance in the morphological and systematic knowledge of the Cestoda has been made this year through two papers published by Dr. C. W. Stiles, of the Bureau of Animal Industry. They command attention not only since they emanate from an American worker, but also by reason of the methods employed. Heretofore it has been largely true that tapeworms were identified by their hosts and by their general appearance, and hence no branch of systematic zoology has been more confused. The same form from different hosts was the recipient of as many different names, and even specimens from the …

Insect Enemies Of The Small Grains, Lawrence Bruner Jan 1893

Insect Enemies Of The Small Grains, Lawrence Bruner

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Although "corn is king" in Nebraska, our crops of small grains are not insignificant. The insect enemies of wheat, oats, barley, and rye therefore demand our attention nearly or quite as much as do those which attack corn. Accordingly, during the past year much time has been given to the study of this class of insect pests. While many of the species are identical for the different crops, the nature of the plants themselves being unlike, it necessarily follows that the mode of attack among these enemies must vary somewhat in each case. This being true, some pains has been …

A Study Of The Forage Plants Of South Dakota With Their Fungous And Insect Enemies, David Griffiths Jan 1893

A Study Of The Forage Plants Of South Dakota With Their Fungous And Insect Enemies, David Griffiths

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The main object of this study being a better acquaintance with fungous parasites, the work on the host plants has been considerably abridged in order that the discussion might be shortened. It was the plan at first to include in this paper a carefully written description of each of the principal forage plants of the state. The futility of such a plan, however, soon became apparent, and it was accordingly decided to omit the description and include simply Distribution,

Habitat, Value as Forage, and the Fungous Parasites of each host. There are, therefore, several of our best forage plants omitted …

Catalogue Of The Snakes Of Nebraska With Notes On Their Habits And Distribution, W. Edgar Taylor

Papers in Herpetology

The author has published in the proceedings of the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture a complete catalogue of Nebraska serpents including notes and descriptions of the adults and young. Since the preparation of this catalogue Prof. Cope's review of North American snakes has appeared. This together with the fact that the author has had time to review his own studies and add many other notes is sufficient excuse for offering the present catalogue.

In the classification we have followed Prof. Cope. The notes given are confined to the Ophidia or serpents of Nebraska. The range of the collection, which was …

On Certain Facts And Principles In The Development Of Form In Literature, L. A. Sherman Jul 1892

On Certain Facts And Principles In The Development Of Form In Literature, L. A. Sherman

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Some ten years or more ago, on first attempting to teach English Literature historically, I found my attention peculiarly drawn to the differences of form between the sentences of More, Hooker, Lyly, and other early prosaists, and of approved stylists in our own age. Here was clearly an organic and sustained development, yet without scientific recognition of a single fact or principle of change. It seemed that something might easily be done towards determining the course of an evolution so evident and remarkable. But I had, or believed I had, no leisure for serious study of the subject, and found …

A Second Edition Of Webber's “Appendix To The Catalogue Of The Flora Of Nebraska." With A Supplementary List Of Recently Reported Species, Herbert J. Webber, Charles E. Bessey

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

PREFATORY NOTE.

The importance to Nebraska botanical students of the paper entitled an "Appendix to the Catalogue of the Flora of Nebraska," prepared by Mr. Herbert J . Webber, M. A., formerly assistant in botany in the University of Nebraska, now assistant in the Shaw School of Botany, St. Louis, warrants its republication by the University. It was published originally in the Transactions of the Academy of Science of St. Louis (Vol. VI., No. 1, March 12, 1892.) The present edition differs from the first only in the correction of a few minor errors, and the rearrangement of the index. …
