Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a degenerative neurologic illness that causes brain atrophy and cell death. Although there is no cure for AD, diagnosing its onset can be very beneficial in the medical field. This paper presents a deep ensemble learning framework for classifying AD stages. Transfer learning (TL) is applied using eight pretrained convolutional neural networks (CNNs) (i.e., VGG16, VGG19, ResNet50V2, MobileNet, DenseNet121, DenseNet169, Xception and MobileNetV2). Stackedgeneralization ensembles techniques are used to provide greater generalization by combining finetuned models with five ensemble models. Using five different stacked ensembles (SE) models to improve the generalization. The ensemble model created by combining all …

This study proposes an intrusion detection system based on Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks to enhance security in SDN-IoT networks. The research methodology involves data preprocessing, feature selection, and model training using the SDN-IoT dataset. Data preprocessing includes handling missing values and applying various encoding (label, one-hot, frequency, binary) and normalization (minmax, log, robust, z-scaling) techniques to optimize feature representation. Feature selection, conducted using Random Forest and correlation matrix analysis, reduces the feature set from 33 to …
Merging Biophilic Design Approach Into University Learning Interior Spaces: An Applied Experience, Sara M. Atwa
Merging Biophilic Design Approach Into University Learning Interior Spaces: An Applied Experience, Sara M. Atwa
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Incorporating living elements into educational environments is a crucial matter, as many educational spaces are deprived of natural features. Designers should incubate this way of thinking to generate healthy and inspiring spaces for students. The biophilia hypothesis reveals that humankind has a genuine connection with the natural environment which makes us happier and healthier. Biophilic design has motivated architects to merge nature within the interior spaces using plants, reclaimed wood, water features, and daylight. Thereby, this manuscript debates that educational spaces – particularly in universities – requisite a sincere interaction with the nature environment by embracing biophilic design as an …

Objectives: Restricting dietary fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAPs) can alleviate symptoms in children with disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI). Due to the restrictions of a low FODMAP diet (LFD), a less restrictive FODMAP Gentle diet (FGD) has been suggested. However, the types and amounts of high FODMAP foods and carbohydrates commonly consumed by children have not been studied. We aimed to identify the high FODMAP foods and proportions of FODMAP carbohydrates consumed by children with DGBI and healthy children (HC) and to determine which usually ingested FODMAPs would be restricted on the FGD.
Methods: Three-day diet records from …

Acute Strength Training, Not Menstrual Cycle Phase, Increases Lipid Oxidation Rates Following Exercise In Well-Trained, Eumenorrheic Females., Alyssa L. Parten, Abbie E. Smith-Ryan, Eric K. O'Neal, T Scott Lyons, Hunter S. Waldman
Kinesiology
Previous research supports the role of 17-β-estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) in altering lipid oxidation (LOx) rates during aerobic exercise, but it has yet to be determined if LOx is altered between menstrual cycle (MC) phases following strength training (STR). This study examined post-exercise LOx rates in eumenorrheic females, following a bout of STR during the early-follicular phase (EFP) and mid-luteal phase (MLP). Twenty-two (age: 25.1 ± 5.7, BMI: 24.5 ± 2.7) well-trained females completed a repetition maximum (RM) test for the back squat, bench press, and deadlift. Five sets of 3 repetitions at 80-85% 1RM …

Investigating Concealments In Infanticide: Incidents And Forensic Entomological Implications, Gillian L. Johnson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Forensic entomology plays a critical role in estimating the minimum postmortem interval (mPMIs), based on insect evidence. When victims are concealed, this can complicate mPMI estimates. Utilizing data from the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) from 2018 to 2021, I found that victims of infanticides and neonaticides are often concealed. I first investigated the demographics of offenders and victims, how often victims are concealed, and the most common means of concealment. I found that victims of infanticide were likely to be concealed 5% of the time, and neonaticides 50% of the time. Next, I investigated how concealment alters insect …

Characterizing Somatic Variants In Nanopore Data With Machine Learning, Shwethal Sayeeram Trikannad
Master's Projects
Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) is a popular long-read sequencer in genomics. However, its high base-calling error rate produces several sequencing artifacts. Detection of somatic variants in ONT sequenced tumor-normal samples remains challenging due to low frequencies. In this study, machine learning was applied to a dataset created by benchmarking ClairS output against HCC1395 and colo829 truth sets to classify variants and artifacts. Relevant features were engineered from sequence context and variant site characteristics to model artifact profiles. HistGradientBoostingClassifier achieved 0.876950 accuracy, outperforming all other models. Variant quality was the top predictor with an aggregate accuracy of over 85%. This work …
Development And Application Of Enhanced Sampling Techniques For Investigating Protein Interactions And Drug Discovery, Timothy Hasse
Development And Application Of Enhanced Sampling Techniques For Investigating Protein Interactions And Drug Discovery, Timothy Hasse
Wayne State University Dissertations
Understanding the dynamics of protein–protein and protein–ligand interactions is critical for elucidating biological function and guiding drug discovery. However, many such processes involve rare events and high energy barriers that are difficult to capture with conventional molecular dynamics (MD). Enhanced sampling techniques extend the reach of MD, enabling access to biologically relevant transitions and thermodynamic properties. In the first project, Gaussian accelerated MD (GaMD) was used to study the MEIG1–PACRG complex, a key regulator of sperm flagellar assembly. Simulations of wildtype and mutant MEIG1 (W50A, Y68A) revealed mutation-specific disruptions to the binding interface and identified druggable pockets, particularly on PACRG. …

Gene Expression And Dna Methylation Changes In Response To Hypoxia In Toxicant-Adapted Atlantic Killifish (Fundulus Heteroclitus), Neelakanteswar Aluru, Yaamini R. Venkataraman, Christopher S. Murray, Veronica Depascuale
Biology
Coastal fish populations are threatened by multiple anthropogenic impacts, including the accumulation of industrial contaminants and the increasing frequency of hypoxia. Some populations of the Atlantic killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus), like those in New Bedford Harbor (NBH), Massachusetts, USA, have evolved a resistance to dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) that may influence their ability to cope with secondary stressors. To address this question, we compared hepatic gene expression and DNA methylation patterns in response to mild or severe hypoxia in killifish from NBH and Scorton Creek (SC), a reference population from a relatively pristine environment. We hypothesized that NBH fish would show …

Characterization Of Cancer Cell Migration Through Brain Vascular Endothelium Model, Malak Taysser Al-Noubani
2025 Fall Honors Capstones Projects - Archive
One of the hallmarks of cancer is increased vessel growth to feed the tumor’s rapid expansion. The newly formed blood vessels are immature and often leaky due to structural and functional abnormalities. This leads to ineffective anti-cancer drug delivery and provides tumor cells with additional opportunities to metastasize. We propose to develop an in vitro vascular endothelium model and introduce aggressive triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells to mimic the tumor environment, utilizing a Transwell migration assay. The impact of TNBC cells on vessel permeability will be assessed by staining for tight junction proteins, and the migratory capabilities of TNBC cells …
