Chronic stress causes deleterious changes in physiological function in systems ranging from neural cells in culture to laboratory rodents, sub-human primates and humans. It is notable, however, that the vast majority of research in this area has been conducted in males. In this review, we provide information about chronic stress effects on cognition in female rodents and contrast it with responses in male rodents. In general, females show cognitive resilience to chronic stressors which impair male cognitive function using spatial tasks including the radial arm maze, radial arm water maze, Morris water maze, Y-maze and object placement. Moreover, stress often …

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications
The objective of this research was to examine the effect of ultrasound frequency and high-speed agitation on lipid crystallization. Interesterified soybean oil was crystallized at 44 °C without and with the application of high intensity ultrasound (HIU—20 and 40 kHz) or with high-speed agitation (6000 and 24,000 rpm). Two tip amplitudes (24 and 108 µm) and three pulse durations were evaluated (5, 10, and 15 s) for the acoustic frequencies tested. Sonication at 20 kHz of frequency significantly reduced crystal size, increased (p < 0.05) elasticity (435.9 ± 173.3–80,218 ± 15,384 Pa) and SFC (0.2 ± 0.0–4.5 ± 0.4%). No significant difference was observed in the crystallization behavior of these samples when sonicated at different amplitudes for 5 and 10 s. The crystallization behavior was significantly delayed (p < 0.05) in samples sonicated using 108 µm amplitude for 15 s. Larger crystals were formed in samples sonicated at 40 kHz compared to those obtained with 20 kHz and lower SFC (3.7 ± 0.0%) and elasticity (3943 ± 1459 Pa) values were obtained. High-speed agitation at 24,000 rpm increased SFC (5.5 ± 0.1%) and crystallized area and decreased the elasticity (42,602 ± 11,775 Pa) compared to the samples sonicated at 20 kHz.

Age Differences In Dynamic Fatigability And Variability Of Arm And Leg Muscles: Associations With Physical Function, Jonathon Senefeld, Tejin Yoon, Sandra K. Hunter
Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications
Introduction
It is not known whether the age-related increase in fatigability of fast dynamic contractions in lower limb muscles also occurs in upper limb muscles. We compared age-related fatigability and variability of maximal-effort repeated dynamic contractions in the knee extensor and elbow flexor muscles; and determined associations between fatigability, variability of velocity between contractions and functional performance.
Methods
35 young (16 males; 21.0 ± 2.6 years) and 32 old (18 males; 71.3 ± 6.2 years) adults performed a dynamic fatiguing task involving 90 maximal-effort, fast, concentric, isotonic contractions (1 contraction/3 s) with a load equivalent to 20% maximal voluntary isometric …

Network Analytics For The Mirna Regulome And Mirna-Disease Interactions, Joseph Jayakar Nalluri
Theses and Dissertations
miRNAs are non-coding RNAs of approx. 22 nucleotides in length that inhibit gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. By virtue of this gene regulation mechanism, miRNAs play a critical role in several biological processes and patho-physiological conditions, including cancers. miRNA behavior is a result of a multi-level complex interaction network involving miRNA-mRNA, TF-miRNA-gene, and miRNA-chemical interactions; hence the precise patterns through which a miRNA regulates a certain disease(s) are still elusive. Herein, I have developed an integrative genomics methods/pipeline to (i) build a miRNA regulomics and data analytics repository, (ii) create/model these interactions into networks and use optimization techniques, motif …

Both rice bran and parboiled rice bran can be used for rice bran oil production. Parboiled rice is more desirable than rice bran due to its higher oil content and lower acid value compared to rice bran, hence higher price. The difference in price of raw materials may motivate suppliers to mix raw rice bran in parboiled rice bran. As a result, rice bran oil manufacturers frequently come across parboiled rice bran samples that have higher acid value and lower oil content. Currently, Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR) is widely used in rice bran oil production plant as a rapid and …

Seasonal Variations Of Picophytoplankton, Nanophyto-Plankton And Microphytoplankton Communities At Sichang Island, Chonburi Province, Anassaya Deesuk
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Sichang Island is in the eastern part of the Inner Gulf of Thailand where is primarily influenced by two monsoon winds, the northeast monsoon and the southwest monsoon. The effect of this factor lead to changes in phytoplankton community. However, most studies have been focused on microphytoplankton community not pico- and nanophytoplankton due to their small size and study methods. Therefore, seasonal variations of pico-, nano-, and microphytoplankton around Sichang Island were observed. The samplings were conducted at 10 stations around Sichang Island in two monsoon and two intermonsoon periods. Pico- and nanophytoplankton were analyzed by flow cytometry whereas microphytoplankton …
Effects Of Food On Growth And Gonadal Development Of Seahorse Hippocampus Sp., Thatpon Kamnurdnin
Effects Of Food On Growth And Gonadal Development Of Seahorse Hippocampus Sp., Thatpon Kamnurdnin
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Hippocampus sp. has received attention as a source of aquarium and ornamental trade. Seahorses have been threatened from non-target fisheries, habitat loss and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In response to concern about a decrease of population in the wild, an aquaculture of this species may provide the seahorse numbers for the commercial demands. However, one of the critical problems in aquaculture is the proper dietary for growth and their development. Therefore, this study was conducted on different types of preys on survival rates, growth rates and gonadal development in Hippocampus sp. during the day of birth until the 31day after …

Carotenoids And Metabolism Of The Green Microalga Chlorococcum Sp. 8367re Under Stress Conditions, Kantima Janchot
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Green microalgae are one of the natural resources for productions of various and beneficial bioactive compounds, such as UV-screening compounds and carotenoids. This study focuses on the changes of carotenoids and metabolisms in the green microalga Chlorococcum sp. 8367RE under stress conditions. The results showed that stresses by salt, light, drought, and nitrogen starvation affected on alterations of morphological characteristics. Interestingly, size of cells culturing under salt stresses dramatically increased. It should be noted that KCl stress caused the enlargement of cell sizes approximately 5 folds. Carotenoids were identified and quantified by using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) and mass …

Functional Characterization Of Natural Sunscreen Compound Mycosporine-2-Glycine From Extremophilic Cyanobacterium Halothece Sp. Pcc 7418 In Macrophage Cell Line And Fresh Water Cyanobacterium, Supamate Tarasuntisuk
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Mycosporine-2-glycine (M2G) is a rare UV-screening compound in a group of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs). This molecule is found in only two cyanobacteria; Euhalothece sp. LK-1 and Aphanothece halophytica (Halothece sp. PCC 7418). The structure of M2G composed of 4-deoxygadusol as a core structure, attached by 2 molecules of glycine at C1 and C3 positions. M2G has a maximal adsorption at 331 nm and a better antioxidative activity than other MAAs. Thus, it is interesting in determination of other activities for further cosmeceutical and pharmaceutical applications. In this study, a high purity M2G was successfully extracted and purified from Halothece …
