A New Method To Start Loaded Induction Motors, Omar El-Sayed Mohammed Youssef
Journal of Engineering Research
Three-phase induction motors have a widespread use in industry, and starting of loaded induction motors is an important matter. However, there are few studies on motor starting using variable-frequency drives (VFDs). The existing control schemes, described by these studies, have disadvantages such as dependence on derived characteristics, adjustment of settings, design of controllers, or burden of calculations on the control processor. In this paper, a simple and effective control scheme of VFDs to start loaded motors is proposed. In this scheme, there is no dependence on any characteristic, adjustment of settings, controllers, and rotor speed sensor. By this scheme, the …

This is an iteration from previous designs of the Hybrid AC/DC House with a systematic addition of a portable AC power supply unit. This iteration for the Hybrid AC/DC House is an innovation of independence for sustainable housing solutions. It will serve as an alternative for rural communities needing power to rely on self-sustainable microgrids rather than large-scale AC electric grids. The addition of a portable AC power supply would allow the microgrid to remove its reliance on AC power from the larger grid and would elevate the system to complete energy independence. The microgrid has DC power generated from …

Reconstruction Of Radar Range Profiles Using Dropped Channel Polarimetric Compressive Sensing, Nat Thomason
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis documents the design, construction and testing of a bench-top level measurement system and verifies previously established Dropped Channel Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar Compressive Sensing (DCPCS) simulation results. Compressive Sensing is a mathematical technique which can capture and represent compressible signals at sampling rates significantly below the Nyquist rate. DCPCS is a technique which enhances Compressive Sensing techniques using known physical antenna crosstalk values. The DCPCS technique enables reconstruction of fully polarimetric signals whilst only measuring part of the signal, reducing data capture requirements.

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Thermally Self-Charging Supercapacitors (TSCS) are a promising new technology that can harvest waste heat to produce electrical energy. The Soret effect is exploited wherein ion separation due a temperature gradient leads to a potential difference. Here, we use electrophoretic deposition (EPD), a room-temperature, scalable, universal technique, to obtain CNT decorated electrodes for fabrication of such TSCS devices with ionic liquid electrolyte. We further show that precise control over deposition parameters can be used for optimization of TSCS performance metrics. TSCS devices were tested by several characterization standards, indicating the superior performance of nanodecorated electrodes obtained by EPD.

Application Of The Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming Technique For The Economic Planning Of Transmission Networks In New Manner, Nader Shawky Abdelhakeem, Maged Gamal Lotfy, Mohamed Shibl Albags, Ahmed Saied Elzawawy
Mansoura Engineering Journal
In the recent years, the mathematical planning model of transmission networks based on full AC load flow has been developed. But, due to the model non-convexity and the existing of large number of local solutions, this model can only be used for small size networks as it consumes large unreasonable computation time in addition to its incapability to yield global solution in most cases. To overcome these problems, two new iterative solution procedures have been presented in this paper. In the first one, the objective function is changed to the minimization of the number of new lines required to satisfy …

Real-Time Occupancy-Based Control Of Hvac Systems In Office Buildings Considering Energy Saving And Thermal Comfort, Emmanuel Agabi
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Traditional heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) control systems often waste energy and fail to maintain thermal comfort due to their reliance on static setpoints, manual on/off control, and limited responsiveness to occupancy and weather conditions. With advancements in the Internet of Things (IoT), integrating occupancy data into building energy management systems, including HVAC systems, has progressed beyond conventional sensor-based approaches. This thesis addresses the inefficiency of traditional control of HVAC systems by proposing two strategies for a single-zone office building. The first one is occupancy-based control (OBC), and the second is data-driven supervisory model predictive control (SMPC). By leveraging …

As the demand for cloud-native infrastructure grows, managing energy becomes increasingly essential for small-scale and large-scale Kubernetes clusters. This research introduces two scheduling strategies to enhance energy usage in Kubernetes clusters: the energy-aware resource scheduler and the adaptive energy-aware resource scheduler. Both approaches aim to reduce energy consumption by dynamically managing node states and workload assignments based on resource utilization. Both schedulers are implemented as extenders on top of the default Kubernetes scheduler. A comparative evaluation against the default Kubernetes scheduler and the bin packing scheduler, using power and energy utilization metrics, demonstrates that while the energy-aware scheduler achieves notable …

An Attention-Guided Image Super-Resolution For Scene Text, Tithnorakneath Em
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Scene Text Image Super-Resolution (STISR) is crucial in enhancing text recognition for low-resolution images, often degraded due to environmental and device limitations. While many existing STISR approaches leverage super-resolution techniques to refine image quality, they frequently need specialized mechanisms to extract text-specific features. Most existing methods were based on feature extraction methods that missed critical details, such as edges and text-background contrasts, that are usually important for recognition. In this work, we propose a new feature extraction method that uses Channel Attention and Spatial Attention mechanisms to emphasize features related to text, namely edges, contours, and spatial alignment. We add …
