This essay explores how female characters in historical literature written in high to late medieval England shape land claims, political history, and genealogy through their acts of childbirth. Recent scholarship has shown how medieval writers frequently imagined virginal female bodies – religious and secular – in relation to land claim, but less work exists on how they also used the non-virginal bodies of mothers and vivid descriptions of childbirth to assert rights to land and lineage. Since establishing diplomatic relations in the nineteenth century, South Korea and France have seen excellent bilateral ties and cultural exchanges through the present day. The vibrant nature of this exchange reveals itself in the translation of French literature into Korean and in the increasing demand for Korean literature in France, where occidental and francophone influences have traditionally flourished. In this thesis I interrogate the French interest in Korean culture, using translated novels as vehicles of exploration: Lee Seung-u’s The Private Lives of Plants and Han Kang’s The Vegetarian. From antiquity to the Third Republic, this article follows visual and literary representations that measured space, time and ideological oppositions that spawned an image of the Mediterranean as an area of transmission and cultural tension. It focuses on three theorists: the head of Action Française, Charles Maurras; the novelist Louis Bertrand; and critic and cultural impresario Joachim Gasquet. Each contributed to the formation of an image of the Mediterranean basin as the birthplace of European heritage and a battlefield in a struggle against the forces of democracy and cultural hybridization.

Abstract: ∈ is a book of sonnets written by the French mathematician and poet Jacques Roubaud. The book draws inspiration from a myriad of sources, most prominently from a game of GO played between Masami Shinohara and Mitsuo Takei recorded by the GO Review magazine in April 1965. Roubaud himself encourages the readers of ∈ to read the book in multiple different orders, which the article identifies as the diagram order, the pagination order, the GO order, and the random order. Syntax of the complex sentence: the case of the relative clause in Amazigh (Tachelhit)

After a brief presentation of the complex sentence in Amazigh, we will focus, in this article, on the study of the relative clause and on the analysis of its structure. We will try to demonstrate, by relying on formal criteria such as position and syntactic function, that there is indeed a homogeneous class of relative pronouns and a relative subordinate with its specificities but also that it may have in common with other languages.

Ferguson’s Accounting for Taste reveals a gap in our understanding: How did French culinary discourse move beyond the bourgeois sphere in which it emerged in the nineteenth century? This paper examines the extratextual materials that reified the novel/film Tea in the Harem as an archive of knowledge about the beur community. I argue that Tea in the Harem was subjected to what I call an anthropological approach to literature, a reading practice which instrumentalizes and subordinates the text to the historical reality which it is said to represent. Though in many ways entangled with the principles of French republicanism, the reception of Tea in the Harem is symptomatic of a more general phenomenon in which literatures of “the other” are expected to rehabilitate, educate, and civilize the majority …

West-African film scholar Boukary Sawadogo identifies the 1990s as a period of transition in West-African Francophone cinema: Whereas earlier films from the region tend to deal broadly with socioeconomic themes relevant to the African continent at large, newer productions generally emphasize local and personal concerns, often addressing social issues from the starting point of a marginalized individual. In this paper, I explore two Burkinabe films, Yaaba (Idrissa Ouédraogo, 1989) and Kounandi (Apolline Traoré, 2004), in relation to Sawadogo’s analytic framework of marginality. This thesis is a literary translation of French author Marion Guillot’s 2018 novel C’est moi. The work tells the story of a journey of self-discovery gone wrong. The unnamed narrator feels as if she and Tristan, her unemployed boyfriend, are slowly drifting apart as they put up with the daily domestic drudgery of their Parisian lives. They don’t really get out anymore and they never see anyone except Tristan’s only friend, Charlin, someone who the narrator doesn’t particularly care for. This study examines the communicative role of clothing in film. Using the skillful costume canvas of French designer Anaïs Romand, we explore the possible visual messages and potential cultural and linguistic meanings that clothing choice conveys. This analysis uses Roland Barthes’ Theory of the “Five Codes” from his book S/Z as well as psychological sources about color analysis as its methodological basis. Images from each of the five period piece films were chosen and analyzed using semiotics.
