Creole Sketches, Lafcadio Hearn, Charles Woodward Hutson
Creole Sketches, Lafcadio Hearn, Charles Woodward Hutson
Zea E-Books Collection
New Orleans in 1878 was the most exotic and cosmopolitan city in North America. An international port, with more than 200,000 inhabitants, it was open to French, Spanish, Mexican, South American, and West Indian cultural influences, and home to a thriving population descended from free African Americans. It was also a battleground in the fight against yellow fever (malaria) and in the political upheavals that followed the end of Reconstruction. The continued influx of Anglo-Americans and the renewed ascendancy of white supremacists threatened to overwhelm the local blend of languages, races, and cultures that enlivened the unique Creole character of …

Decoloniality is a concept coined by Walter Mignolo to fight against the invasion of the euro-American imaginary in the rest of the world that Anibal Quijano calls coloniality. Thus designed by the Modernity/Coloniality/Decoloniality research group to answer the vast question raised by globalization to the universal consciousness ; questioning centered on the conditions for re-socialization and a new humanization, the theory of decoloniality is determined as a philosophy of liberation based on epistemic disobedience. It finds a favorable echo among many African novelist, particularly Mongo Beti whose writings are intended as a methodology of historical initiative which intends to analyze …

Réunion: Haven Or Hostile Land?: A Translation Of A Complex Documentary In Pursuit Of Reclaiming Identity, Hannah Conner
Réunion: Haven Or Hostile Land?: A Translation Of A Complex Documentary In Pursuit Of Reclaiming Identity, Hannah Conner
French Honors Projects
In 2012, the documentary film La Réunion : terre d’asile ou terre hostile was first screened at the Comorian International Film Festival (CIFF). The film, directed by Comorian filmmaker Saïd-Ali Said Mohamed, explores the experiences of Comorians on the island of Réunion, a Department of France in the Indian Ocean. It not only discusses the complex, interwoven histories and identities of the Comoros and Réunion, but the film itself is part of a broader movement to reclaim the representation of Comorians. This project, a French to English subtitling of the film and an accompanying analysis, seeks to fully appreciate the …
Comment Raconter Autrement L’Expérience Migratoire ? Une Analyse Croisée De Trois Romans Francophones, Adele Mclees
Comment Raconter Autrement L’Expérience Migratoire ? Une Analyse Croisée De Trois Romans Francophones, Adele Mclees
Ecstasy, Confession, Image, And Silence In Buber, Bergman, And Godard, Karl E. Toepfer
Ecstasy, Confession, Image, And Silence In Buber, Bergman, And Godard, Karl E. Toepfer
Open Educational Resources
This essay discusses the contrasting attitudes toward ecstatic experience as described in Martin Buber's book Ekstatische Konfessionen (1909). Ingmar Bergman's film Persona (1966), and Jean-Luc Godard's film Weekend (1967). The attitude toward ecstasy depends heavily on the use of language and confidence in language to represent ecstatic experience. Buber, Bergman. and Godard share little, if any, perception on the relation between language, speech, and ecstasy.
Resisting The Image: Heidi, Sheep And Swiss Trash, Jonathan Gosnell
Resisting The Image: Heidi, Sheep And Swiss Trash, Jonathan Gosnell
French Studies: Faculty Publications
The novel Swiss Trash, written by Dunia Miralles in 2000, interrogates stereotypes around immigration and nationhood in contemporary francophone Switzerland, with the intention of turning some notions on their head and letting others fester, uncomfortably. The French-language text underscores the divisions, the startling differences present within a seemingly perfect “Heidiland.” Its English title hints at complex and often equivocal cultural denotations extant within the Helvetic Confederation. A simultaneous reading of Swiss Trash and Heidi, of familiar Swiss citizens and intrusive immigrants, offers, this article contends, revealing visions of a dismal present/future and an idealized past. Read alongside works …

Five Hundred African Voices: A Catalog Of Published Accounts By Africans Enslaved In The Transatlantic Slave Trade, 1586-1936, Aaron Spencer Fogleman, Robert Hanserd
Faculty Books & Book Chapters
The importance of published accounts by African slave ship survivors is well-known but not their existence in large numbers. Fogleman and Hanserd catalog nearly five hundred discrete accounts and more than 2,500 printings of them over four centuries in numerous Atlantic languages. Short biographies of each African, print histories of the complete or partial life story. Five Hundred African Voices an invaluable resource for scholars, teachers, students, and others wishing to study transatlantic slavery using African Voices.

Deux Histoires De Meurtres Et D’Intrigues : L’Étude Et L’Application Pratique Des Techniques Courantes De La Traduction Française, Joseph Kalmar
Senior Independent Study Theses

Statut De La Femme Dans Branle-Bas En Noir Et Blanc Et Perpétue Et L’Habitude Du Malheur : Son Assujettissement Est-Il Seulement Double ?, Chandra Feupeussi
This article offers a reading of the status and image of women in the postcolonial context of Africa through Branle-bas en noir et blanc and Perpétue et l’habitude du malheur by iconoclastic writer Mongo Beti. The female figures of his novels allow him to decry the conditions in which women are forced to live, between colonial, patriarchal, matriarchal and religious subjugation. Mongo Beti wants to be realistic when he talks about the problems of Africa; using women as a metaphor, he paints an Africa plagued by multiple evils that require us to get busy to get it out of underdevelopment, …
Is France Having A Populist Moment?, Emma Gilmore
Is France Having A Populist Moment?, Emma Gilmore
Honors Theses
The word populism is often thrown around in news media and academic scholarship, but there is a lack of understanding of what it actually means as a political theory. In France, the two presidential candidates that made it to the second round in 2017, Emmanuel Macron and Marine le Pen, were both called populist, despite having vastly different campaign strategies and messages. This study used a computer-based method to analyze Campaign books from 24 candidates beginning in 1981 that determined that Populist language is on the rise, but not as aggressively as news media suggests.

La Marianne Multiculturelle: Une Analyse Comparative De L’Appartenance Des Femmes Noires En France Dans Mariannes Noires Et Bande De Filles, Norika Saah , '22
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

French and Francophone Studies Faculty Research and Scholarship
This screenplay raises the ghosts of the Atlantic. Set in one of the haunted places of French colonialism, the fortress where Toussaint Louverture was deported by Bonaparte and died in 1803, the film summons the voices of Afro-French and Francophone authors. They call out to us from deep in the darkness; we are jolted awake, prompted to remember: between 1642 and 1848, France enslaved 4 million people, 1.5 million captured in Africa and 2.5 million born as slaves in the colonies. Oblivion perpetuates the “White order”, by erasing its crimes behind la grandeur et le rayonnement de la France. Écoutez, …
