Voices From The Wild Zone: Feminist Awakenings In Selected Works Of George Sand And Kate Chopin, Kristen Findley

My research focused on four pieces of literature to examine awakenings as examples of the female voice. An awakening I defined as a woman rediscovering herself and the world around her. I consulted The Awakening and "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin, an American woman, as well as La Petite Fadette and Indiana by George Sand, a Frenchwoman, to explore different types of awakenings within different contexts. To examine an awakening further, I used a theory explained by Elaine Showalter, a feminist critic, and Shirley and Edwin Ardener, anthropologists, as "The Wild Zone," an area of women¹s culture. …

The work by French author Benoite Groult (1920- ) is an expression of personal discontent. Biographer Fernando Goutier (1978, p. 98) points out that from 1968 to 1975 an increasingly acute awareness of the political and economic situation of Women compelled Groult to write Ainsi soit-elle (1975). Ainsi soit-elle is the point of departure for our study of feminist perspectives in Benoite Groult's writing. The purpose of this research project is to explore the possibilities, and the validity, of a feminist reading of a selection of essays and novels produced by Groult between 1975 and 1993. This thesis examines Pernette du Guillet's Rymes, focusing of her feminine poetic voice and her merit as a Neoplatonist Renaissance poet. In a time when literary endeavors were almost exclusively the domain of men, women presenting themselves as writers were often judged on the appropriateness of women writing as well as the quality of their work. Women had to forge their own identity as writers and find their own voice within a patriarchal society and literary community.

What are the difficulties involved in transferring a work of literature from one language to another, and what contributions might an analysis of the translation of a literary work make to the field of translation studies? These questions are explored in this thesis through the exploration of translation theories in general, and the analysis of one particular case with consideration of the theoretical implications it presents. "The one hundred forty-six poems which comprise Les Sonnets pour Helene represent Pierre de Ronsard's final cycle of sonnets. This study explores the 1584 edition, the last published during Ronsard's lifetime, and focuses on the harmony and unity of the work as a whole. It enhances our comprehension of the sonnets by examining systems of dualities, the most prominent of which are the voices and discourses of two personas, a lover and a poet. This fresh approach to a sonnet sequence provides insights into the composition and themes of the cycle by interpreting the entire sequence as a text about …

This project is an analysis of four nineteenth-century French novels (Les Misérables, La Ville Noire, Le Rouge et le Noir, and Madame Bovary) that examines the different processes men and women go through in changing social status. The project begins with a historical summary of the different social classes and women's positions within these classes. Also discussed are the literary conventions of Romanticism and Realism--the two major literary movements of nineteenth-century French literature. This thesis, written in French, is a comparative study of the themes of absurdity and revolt as reflected in fictional works of Franz Kafka and Albert Camus. Aspects of absurdity studied include sense of strangeness and alienation, mis- or non- communication, and ineffective action. Characters in these works revolt against absurdity, manifested in stagnant life and in the certainty of death, and sometimes come to a level of acceptance of life in itself and of death. The two authors complement each other remarkably well: Camus gives us philosophical explanations and psychological examples of the absurd struggle, and Kafka presents us …

The nature of Calvin’s tractate Reponse to questions and objections of a certain Jew (Ad quaestiones et obiecta Judaei cuiusdam responsio) has long been a matter of some dispute among Calvin scholars. The nineteenth-century editors of Calvin’s works considered the book to be “meager and weak,” no doubt assuming that Calvin was responsible for composing both the questions and answers. In the twentieth century, scholars have been more inclined to see some evidence of an actual dispute between a Jew and a Christian in the book. A popular belief during the late 19^th and early 20^th century held that the image of the last thing seen at the moment of death remained imprinted forever upon the retina of the eye. It was called an “optogram.” This belief developed concurrently with rapid advances made in photography during the historical period, and was seemingly validated by certain scientific experiments in ocular physiology done in the 1870s. Looking for the “photo in a dead person’s eye” soon became an accepted police investigative procedure and an established touchstone of much turn-of-the-century SF and detective fiction. This project discusses Indiana law addressing child abuse and abuse of endangered adults as it relates to the practice of psychology. Intended as a resource for 1 psychologists, this paper reviews important issues in the areas of child abuse and abuse of endangered adults, offers understandable explanations of the laws and procedures utilized in the application of these laws in Indiana, discusses ethical concerns related to confidentiality, and offers suppositions for public policy and advocacy by the profession. In addition, selected text of the Indiana Code is presented for future reference.

Relationship Satisfaction As A Function Of The Discrepancy Between Experienced And Desired Levels Of Intimacy, Joan T. Malcolm

The present study investigated the effect of discrepancies between experienced versus desired levels ·of intimacy on relationship satisfaction using data from 13§ undergraduate students. Subjects completed the Personal Assessment of Intimacy in Relationships (PAIR), the Dyaqic Relationship Questionnaire (DRQ), the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS), and a Background Questionnaire (BQ). Correlation and multiple regression analyses indicated that discrepancies between Desired and Experienced Intimacy, as measured by the PAIR and DRQ, was highly predictive of relationship satisfaction, as measured by the DAS. However, Experienced Intimacy was a better predictor of relationship satisfaction. Both males and females ranked Emotional Intimacy as most important …
