Less Or More Black And White? Reassessing Genet's Les Nègres In Light Of Both Published Versions, Brian G. Kennelly

Each of the five plays by Jean Genet performed before his death in 1986 exists in more than one published version.² Critics have discussed the differences between the various published versions of each play³ with the exception of Les nègres: the drama commissioned by Raymond Rouleau, first published by Marc Barbezat in 1958, first performed in a production by Roger Blin at the Thèâtre de Lutèce in Paris in 1959, and published in a revised edition the following year.

Prior to the French Revolution of 1789, women were seen primarily as private and domestic individuals, whereas men were seen more as public and political. Women were oppressed in many ways, and girls had fewer opportunities to become educated than did boys at this time. During the Revolution, however, women came into a new existence and became politically involved in various manners, and it was in this way that women seized a non-traditional form of education. Women initiated politically motivated marches, such as the October Days (4-5 October 1789), during which thousands of women marched from Paris to the king's …

This project, written in French, is an exploration of the relationship between the personal ideology of French film director François Truffaut and his films. In examining such things as camera movements, camera angles, music, staging, and dialogue, the Scholar discovered how Truffaut’s ideas of childhood were displayed in his films. The life and work of Truffaut serves as a great example of how a director’s worldview is inevitably reflected in their films.

In an effort to reconstruct a History that has been marked by discontinuity and displacement, Simone Schwarz-Bart–a woman writer from Guadeloupe–has written two novels that are infused by the oral tradition of the Caribbean. This dissertation studies the diverse manifestations of the oral genres (such as songs/chants, sayings, proverbs, riddles, etc.) within the novels Pluie et vent sur Telumee Miracle and Ti Jean L'horizon. This thesis presents an examination of the influence of Cathar philosophy, doctrine, and life style on selected works of troubadour poets. Whether Cathar ideology is revealed clearly, secretly, allegorically, symbolically, or not at all in the poetry of the troubadours, has been discussed and debated from a variety of angles by various scholars. There appears to be no completely convincing evidence either way. Some authors argue that the language of the troubadours was in fact the secret language of the Cathars. This thesis examines how the cinematic organization of film is used to convey meaning. Hiroshima mon amour (1959) and L'Année dernière à Marienbad (1961), two films directed by Alain Resnais, are used as models for this purpose. This thesis argues for a new type of film criticism, one that recognizes the uniqueness of film by adding technical analysis to the literary methods that currently dominate.

Many medieval authors used religious imagery to influence their religious-minded audiences. Old French Arthurian romances are laden with religious images and allegoric undertones drawn from contemporary religious beliefs. The purpose of the present study is to examine the changes in redemptive imagery as represented through certain characters in the romances studied and to demonstrate how the religious views of the Middle Ages were assimilated into this body of Arthurian literature. Current trends in North African francophone literature include a movement towards the exploration of alienation and exile, most often in the form of novels written about Maghrebian immigrants in Europe. Yet this alienation exists within the North African context as well, and it is possible to feel alienated and exiled, as well as marginalized, within one's homeland. This question is explored by Moroccan francophone author Abdelhak Serhane in his novel, Le Soleil des obscurs, which is the focus of this study.

This study is divided into several parts, the first of which deals with the successes and weaknesses of the French women's movement. The second part will focus on the progress and shortcomings of governmental policies which concern women's rights. This will be followed by an analysis of women's participation in national government. Finally I will show that, overall, the advances in women's rights in France since the 1960s outweigh the setbacks. If we consider their achievements within their cultural context, French women have been successful in overcoming enormous social, legal and political obstacles

The 'Memoires de Celeste Mogador' is a Bildungsroman narrating the life a a prostitute and an actress. Censorship may have been the reason the book was not better known in its own time, and maybe even today. She eventually marries a count with whom she has an affair and follows him when he becomes French consul to Australia. The books recounts the life of an exceptional 19th century heroine, who has the strength to succeed despite a society which limits female roles and has ideas about proper marriages.

"Classicism and Romanticism attempts to provide an overview of the European literature in translation that arose in the so-called classical and romantic periods. Very roughly speaking, one could say that Classical literature was written in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, while Romantic literature was written in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries."
