Being rational and Cartesian, the detective novel is often bound by powerful constraints which seem not very compatible with the supernatural and the fantastic often defining West Indian writing. Through the analysis of Martinican Patrick Chamoiseau’s Solibo Magnifique (1988) and Haitian Gary Victor’s Les cloches de la Brésilienne (2006), we will nevertheless see how well they work together, the irrational taking hold of the detective novel, leading paradoxically to the progressive elimination of Cartesian practices and challenging an exclusively rational portrayal of the world.

This study seeks to establish the generational difference between Beur and Francophone literatures using Kiffe Kiffe Demain by Faïza Guène contrasted with Le Siècle des Sauterelles by Malika Mokeddem. The struggle underlying both narratives is the protagonists’ attempts to negotiate their own identities while being torn between two very differing cultures. Le Siècle des Sauterelles explores the role that the French colonization had on Algerians as individuals. The characters are Algerian nomads who cling to western ideals of literacy and personal choice and in so doing, reject Algerian social hierarchy. Calixthe Beyala is well known for her ambivalent relationship with both France and Africa. Her novels, meanwhile, are often divided according to tone and geography, between the grim portrayal of West African settings and the relatively upbeat (and more popular) novels of migration to the French hexagon. This article compares two novels encompassing this apparent divide – Tu t'appelleras Tanga (1988) and Le petit prince de Belleville (1992) – with a focus on Beyala's vision of the urban landscape as an inscription of a bilateral history. Most writing by women that has survived from before the fall of New France—perhaps most writing by women during that period—was done by nuns in the seven communities founded before 1763: the Ursulines, the Hôtel-Dieu, and the Hôpital-Général in Québec; the Ursulines of Trois-Rivières; the Hôtel-Dieu and two uncloistered institutes, the Congrégation de Notre-Dame and Sisters of Charity of Marguerite d’Youville in Montreal.

Civil unions are currently a divisive issues in the United States. Religion has historically influenced these debates. The French version of civil union, the Pacte Civil de Solidarité (Pacs,) was created in 1999 after seven years of debate. Many have written about the Pacs in the last decade. However, few have explored the direct correlations with France's relationship with Catholicism, her dominant religion that is doctrinally opposed to any sexual relationships outside of marriage. External Possession Meets Bare Nouns In Malagasy, Ileana Paul

This paper examines apparent noun incorporation in Malagasy that is the result of external possession (possessor raising). It is shown that such incorporation is not derived via head movement or via compounding. Instead, it is argued that this is an instance of pseudo noun incorporation (Massam, 2001): the possessum is merged as an NP sister to the predicate. As for the structure of external possession, a non-movement analysis is proposed: the apparent possessor is generated as the specifier of a null possessive head and binds an empty argument position within the possessum. Cet article présente le projet « Cross-Cultural Connections », débuté en 2003, entre des étudiantes de Smith College, une université privée dans le Massachusetts, et des étudiants de Télécom ParisTech, une école d’ingénieurs française. Les étudiants inscrits dans ce projet se retrouvent pendant un semestre pour des conversations transatlantiques hebdomadaires en temps réel, en petits groupes grâce à des caméras web (webcams), et lors de visioconférences qui réunissent les deux classes entières. Since 2003, when Clémence Boulouque's memoir, Mort d'un silence, was published, its author has written in a variety of genres, including novels, articles, and film scripts. Mort d'un silence interests the reader for several reasons: it revisits Judge Gilles Boulouque's suicide in December 1990 and the consequences of this act for his family, especially his thirteen-year-old daughter, Clémence; it recalls the political climate in France during the late 1980s, when Gilles Boulouque had already begun to fight terrorism; and it illustrates the tension between disclosure and concealment as its twenty-six-year-old narrator describes her passage from childhood to adolescence and from …

Masculinities In War: René-Nicolas Ehni's Algérie Roman, Jane Evans

René-Nicolas Ehni, controversial social figure and critic in France since the 1960s and literary figure especially known for his plays and novels, characterizes his French military service during the Algerian war for independence in his autobiographical Algérie roman, published in 2002. In the novel, the first-person narrator-protagonist intersperses his descriptions of the struggle with scenes from his past and present denoting family genealogies and homosexual relationships. Through a narration that is itself marked by violence, including digressions, rhetorical figures and discontinuous prose, Algérie roman strongly affirms the significance of masculine friendships of every kind.

This article traces the image of the soldier in representative French iterary works of the 20th and 21st centuries while relating the discussion to the development of French nationhood. Barbusse's Le Feu, Chamson's Le Puits des miracles, Vercors' Le Silence de la mer, and Ehni's Algérie roman will all be considered within the sociopolitical frameworks described by Weber and Bhabha.

This is the first article to assess the importance of Luciano Bianciardi’s last novel, Aprire il fuoco [Open Fire!](1969), a work often overlooked, that offers crucial insights into Bianciardi’s commitments to social causes. A so-called “irregular” of 20th-century Italian literary panorama, Luciano Bianciardi (1922-1971) in his Aprire il fuoco discusses his idea of literature as an activity that must aim at assuming the role of ethical guide in societies. In my article, I gloss the often obscure historical and literary references of the novel, and provide a critical assessment of its impact.

The task for those exploring the relationship of Deleuze to cultural issues is not to extend his thought in a straight line, but to swerve or veer into thinking a productive approach to the cultural events that actualise themselves in our time. Cain states that the virtue of these three books is that they do not simply go back to the same old questions; all of them represent departures in thinking in the best sense of the word.

This essay studies Ducasse’s various stylistic strategies for triggering the reader’s pleasure, or lack thereof. By considering Riffaterre’s concept of style, I demonstrate that Ducasse’s sentence organization and word choice underscore negation. Analyzing a passage from canto three highlights the stylistic means used to hinder the reader’s pleasure.

Les occasions où Jean-Jacques Rousseau s'est vu accusé d'ingratitude se sont multipliées à mesure qu'il profitait de la bienveillance de ses hôtes. Mais l'ambivalence de cette hospitalité, don prétendument gratuit qui attend en réalité une compensation, est aussi la source des brouilles fréquentes entre Rousseau et ses hôtes. Son séjour dans la propriété du physiocrate Mirabeau père, en 1767, illustre le malentendu initial qui conduit le premier à clamer son ingratitude volontaire et le second à formuler l'aporie d'un don nul.
