Réalisme Magique Et Réalisme Merveilleux Dans L’Oeuvre D’André Et De Simone Schwarz-Bart, Charles W. Scheel

André Schwarz-Bart’s novels have elicited occasional mentions of magical realism as a literary “style” by critics, while Simone Schwarz-Bart’s fiction has been approached in relation to the “poetics” of the “marvelous real” developed as for 1949 by Alejo Carpentier. This essay argues that in André’s The Last of the Justs and The Morning Star, as well as in Simone’s The Bridge of Beyond, both authors practice almost constantly a form of poeticizing of the narrative that fuses reality and mystery in a narrative mode I have defined under the label marvelous realism; but they both also have occasional recourse to …

André Schwarz-Bart’s literary call was born from his will to immortalize in writing the memory of the culture of his Jewish ancestors which was eradicated from the map of Europe during the Shoa. A pioneer of the “memory work” with The Last of the Justs, a novel awarded the Goncourt in 1959, he invented the genre of the “identity saga” whose heroes gather within themselves the centuriesold experience of their people. A similar ambition guided him while he composed a cycle – that remained mostly unpublished – about Black slavery and the culture issued from it: A Woman Named Solitude.

This article studies in what forms the magical-religious dimension is expressed in the fiction works of the Schwarz-Bart couple in order to assess the function given by the authors to the manifestations of the “divine” therein. The frontier between belief and miscreancy is particularly flexible in each of the novels – whether written jointly or separately – by André and / or Simone Schwarz-Bart. Each year, approximately 835,000 men and 1.3 million women are victims of intimate partner violence (IPV; American Bar Association, n.d). Although the prevalence of same-sex intimate partner violence (IPV) is approximately the same as IPV in heterosexual couples (Alexander, 2002), fewer studies have examined perceptions of IPV in same-sex couples or of IPV perpetrated against heterosexual men compared to heterosexual women. In the current study, Just World Theory (Lerner & Miller, 1978) is used as a framework for understanding factors associated with perceptions of heterosexual and same-sex IPV, including sexual prejudice and gender self-esteem. This work was motivated by two major facts: the African environment is at the heart of the continents relationships with colonialism, neocolonialism and globalization; but there is not enough literary emphasis on this environmental centrality. This work contributes in bridging the gap between African Francophone Literatures and the environmental discourses. This dissertation is the literary analysis of the representation, the transformation, and the exploitation of the African environment in the operating policies of colonial, neocolonial and global power structures. In this paper I examine the process of Muslim immigrants' integration, probing into the negative French perceptions of immigrants and how these perceptions may affect the process of integration and assimilation. In 1763, France had just suffered a devastating loss to the British in the Seven Years' War. In almost an instant, France's claims to West Africa shrank to the tiny island of Gorée off the coast of Senegal and a few trading posts on the mainland. The traditional women's hammam, or public bath, is a key space in the Arabo-Muslim societies of Algeria and Morocco. In those two countries, the division between men and women, still important today, is also noticeable inside the public bath, since men and women do not mingle. The question of gendered identity appears. More than a distinction between sexes, it is a social distinction between a man's identity and a woman's identity that is relevant here. By focusing on Tierno Monénembo’s L’aîné des orphelins and Abdourahman A. Waberi’s Moisson de crânes, this article illustrates how modernity can be seen as a reflection on language. Having in mind Baudelaire’s conception of modernity (which was defi ned in his writings about the painter Constantin Guys), we demonstrate that the representation of the Rwandan genocide, in both books, involves a singular mise en scène of language. At first, language is seen through the lens of its destructive power; then, as a cure against evil. Indeed, since it involves a distorted perception of reality, language appears to be a vehicle …

L’Aventure Ambiguë De Hamidou Kane : Modernités En Abyme, Elisabeth Mudimbe-Boyi

The article seeks to revisit the interpretation of L’aventure ambiguë by proposing a reading that goes well beyond a simple binarism opposing tradition and modernity. The analysis emphasizes the philosophical dimension of the novel in order to show that African modernity is at the same time representation and critique of the Western modernity inscribed in abyme within the novel. Such approach allows the work to escape the prison house of contingency and to remain open and meaningful in different times and spaces.
