This senior thesis project is a Unit Plan designed for at-risk high school students that incorporates literature from places where I have studied abroad and employs classroom practices that are based upon research in the fields of cognition, motivation, and pedagogy. The accompanying paper addresses the rationale behind choices made for each lesson and the research that supports it.

This essay will examine the reception of Rutu Modan’s international-award-winning graphic novel Exit Wounds (2007) in the massive cultural centers of the United States and France by situating its success within the inter/transnational dynamics of the contemporary comics market, or what James English would term an “economy of prestige.” My essay reconsiders Exit Wounds beyond its popular status as an international phenomenon—that is, one that crosses national borders but which maintains distinctions between those nations it enters and its home state—by considering it a transnational work—one which blurs the lines between nation-states in its form, function, and reception. The purpose of this research is to assess the deficiencies of the Senegalese education system and to evaluate improvements to the system so that it works for the Senegalese, instead of against them. My research is mostly concerned with the process in which the French language is taught in schools. I explain these deficiencies in the education system through elucidation of the discourse used by the French colonizer, politicians, non-governmental organizations, teachers, and parents. La tragédie humaniste du XVIᵉ siècle se distingue par la présence d'un chœur, héritage de la tragédie antique, et par la volonté de rompre avec les représentations allégoriques médiévales. Cette caractérisation semble pourtant paradoxale dans la mesure où le chœur semble lui-même être un personnage allégorique. Dans Cléopâtre captive d'Etienne Jodelle, première tragédie antique écrite en français, le chœur se démarque des allégories dramaturgiques médiévales. Il demeure un personnage à part qui, bien que reprenant certaines figures allégoriques dans son discours, intériorise ses sentiments. Drawing on notions of secularization as a phenomenon of ambivalence or dualism in which religion continues to exist alongside secularity in exerting influence on modern French thought, author Scott M. Powers enlists psychoanalytic theory on mourning and sublimation, the philosophical concept of the sublime, Charles Taylor's theory of religious and secular "cross-pressures," and William James's psychology of conversion to account for the survival of religious themes in Baudelaire, Zola, Huysmans, and Céline. The purpose of this article is to begin drawing attention to the strong likelihood that Freud’s Totem and Taboo (1913) contributed important ideas to the creation of La Promesse (1996) by Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne. In the current article, we take note of just two of its most important aspects: animism, and the childlike recurrence of totemism. In La Promesse, these concepts are elaborated in relationship to a small African statue present in the home of the West African illegal immigrants, Assita and Hamidou. The sculpture …

This paper explores the current state of Cajun (in French, Cadien) literature in the United States. I describe the migration of the Cajuns from Acadia down to Louisiana, the evolution of the French-Cajun dialect and the longstanding bias against it, and use examples of past and modern day Cajun writers and poets to shed light on the recent resurgence of Cajun culture and literature in the United States, even after years of persecution.

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

Looking outside canonical late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century modernist images of the French Atlantic coast, this essay examines usually discrete fields of landscape painting, botanical visual culture and nascent intertidal natural history to articulate an ecological realism of the ecotone. In a survey of peasant gleaning practices, popular natural science of the shore as well as amateur marine botany, the ecological visual literacy of viewers of this era is speculatively assembled. Works by artists such as Elodie La Villete, Charles Cottet, André Dauchez and Mathurin Méheut who lived long term on the coast are put into dialogue with the pressed …

Exploring French Short Stories: Guy De Maupassant's Writing Style And Social Justice, Gielle Kuhn

This project explores the connection between French author Guy de Maupassant’s pessimist writing style and his observations of 19th century French social classes. A literary analysis of two of Maupassant’s short stories, La Parure and Le Gueux, determines key elements of pessimism, naturalism, realism and an unequal class structure, which discriminates between the peasantry, the working class, and the rich bourgeois. My research aims to demonstrate evidence that Maupassant uses a pessimistic writing style to advocate for social justice.

A class devotional is a resource for language learning, as well as, facilitating the means by which students may gain life coping skills. Spanish language literature offers a rich resource for sharing the gospel, available in all academic settings. Students learn that the Scriptures are a life strategy.

This ethnography, conducted at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, conveys the experiences of tutors, students, and administrators in a multilingual writing lab. As the number of both multilingual and international students in American universities increases, more writing centers in the United States have begun to explore the idea of multilingual tutoring. This study offers implications for establishing American multilingual writing centers based on data that emerged from observations and interviews conducted at Stellenbosch. Several themes emerged from the data that have important implications for American centers. First, there must be a clear understanding of what defines a multilingual writing center. …
