As grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horriblis) begin to reoccupy more of their historic range, and as humans and large carnivore populations continue to increase, incidences of human carnivore conflict are on the rise. A decolonial curriculum designed in collaboration with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribe’s wildlife biologists stands to increase awareness of Indigenous ecological knowledge and teach youth about the importance of coexistence with carnivores. Additionally, this project could greatly influence youth perceptions of grizzly bears and other large carnivores. This quantitative, non-experimental study explored the relationship between the features of math and science teachers’ preparation programs and their graduates’ instructional rigor and persistence in teaching. Five math and science teacher preparation programs from across the United States were examined. Six sets of instructional tasks were collected from forty-six recent graduates of these programs to provide insights into novices’ instructional rigor, and employment data were collected for thirty-seven of these graduates three to eight years after graduation. Regardless of the program’s features, all teachers could design and implement instruction with moderate to high rigor. However, this ability was not the …

This study explored 10 prospective teachers’ (PTs’) understanding of the area of a rectangular region using square and non-square rectangular area-units. In an hour-long interview, each PT was first asked to explain how they would find the area of a given rectangular region in terms of a non-square notecard. For several PTs, this task prompted discussion of a square unit defined by the edge of the notecard. In a second task, PTs were presented with a rectangular array of squares and were asked to explain to a fictional child why multiplying length times width does not count the top left …

This study illustrates a problem-solving activity reflective of a real-life situation wherein high school students articulate their reasoning while contemplating the effectiveness and fairness of distributing raises. Study data were gathered via teaching experiment methodology in problem-solving sessions at a mathematics camp for secondary students. Examination of the data indicated that students sought entry points for problem-solving by making assumptions and pinpointing crucial variables. Framing mathematics within the concept of fairness encouraged students to review their work, engage in active listening, and find purpose in mathematical reasoning.

Addressing the participation rates in senior secondary mathematics courses in Australian schools remains a critically important issue. In this paper, the authors report on quantitative findings from a study in which all year 11 and year 12 (aged 17–18 years) Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranking (ATAR) students in Western Australia were invited to participate. The aim was to explore the perceptions of these students regarding their enrolment in higher-level mathematics courses. Data from 1633 students were collected using a survey instrument comprised of 12, 5-point, Likert-scale items. This study investigated the mathematical connections found in the solutions provided by 22 preservice secondary mathematics teachers to a set of algebra problems. Interest in, and research on, mathematical connections has gained prominence of the past decade. Here, we use the Extended Theory of Mathematical Connections or ETMC to explore the types of connections that this framework does and does not capture in the preservice teachers’ solutions. The ETMC surfaced four types of mathematical connections across four problems: ‘different representations’, ‘procedural’, ‘part-whole’ and ‘meaning’. The other types of connections defined in ETMC such as ‘reversibility’ or ‘feature’ were not found …

This paper investigates the expectations that a group of preservice secondary mathematics teachers had for how students would approach four particular algebra problems. Their responses to a set of open-ended items were content analysed. Findings show that the teachers ranged in the expectations that they held for their students. Some teachers expected their students would approach the problems with more sophisticated problem-solving strategies, but many of the teachers expected that the students would only use less desirable “guess-and-check” strategies. We believe teachers’ expectations for student strategies for problem-solving is a topic that warrants further investigation.

Whilst educational goals in recent years for mathematics education are foregrounded the development of mathematical competencies, little is known about mathematics teachers’ competencies. In this study, a group of practising teachers were asked to solve an algebra problem, and their solutions were analysed to determine the competencies apparent (or, equally importantly, absent) in these solutions. The most demonstrated competencies were devising strategies and mathematising, whilst communication and reasoning were mostly missed. The research provides a detailed methodology on how mathematical competencies can be assessed in the context of problem solving.

In this dissertation, I utilize the post-structural philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari as a lens for investigating the proof process. Deleuze and Guattari were both post- structural philosophers who, like many in this tradition, troubled traditional notions related to stable identities, meaning, language, and mathematics. For Deleuze, sense and meaning is not the result of a sterile, transcendent effect or condition that is associated with propositions and states of affairs. Rather, it is the result of a material production that emerges from the world and that has independence from language and the mind. I apply this framework to …

This instrumental case study describes the steps taken to establish and implement a university–school partnership to improve rural science teachers’ content knowledge and teaching practices and students’ achievement in elementary science and high school biology courses. Our research questions explored the impact of professional development and place-based learning on student outcomes, with the study’s methodology involving needs assessments, teacher training, and continuous support through modeling and coaching. The findings include gains in achievement and substantial gains in science education. การวิจัยปฏิบัติการในชั้นเรียนนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ 1) เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะความเป็นนวัตกรของนักเรียนมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลายโดยใช้การเรียนรู้แบบบูรณาการสะเต็มศึกษาร่วมกับการเรียนรู้โดยใช้โครงงานเป็นฐาน 2) เพื่อศึกษาแนวทางในการจัดการเรียนรู้โดยใช้การเรียนรู้แบบบูรณาการสะเต็มศึกษาร่วมกับการเรียนรู้โดยใช้โครงงานเป็นฐานในการพัฒนาลักษณะความเป็นนวัตกรของนักเรียนมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลาย กลุ่มเป้าหมาย ได้แก่ นักเรียนระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 4 จำนวน 39 คน เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัย ได้แก่ 1) แผนการจัดการเรียนรู้ 2) แบบประเมินลักษณะความเป็นนวัตกร 3) แบบประเมินผลงาน 4) แบบสังเกตลักษณะความเป็นนวัตกร 5) แบบบันทึกหลังสอนของครู และ 6) แบบบันทึกการเขียนอนุทินสะท้อนความคิดของนักเรียน ทำการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลเชิงปริมาณ โดยใช้สถิติคือ ค่าเฉลี่ยเลขคณิต คะแนนเฉลี่ยร้อยละ และทำการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลเชิงคุณภาพ ด้วยการวิเคราะห์เนื้อหา และการวิเคราะห์แบบอุปนัย ผลการวิจัยพบว่า (1) นักเรียนมีลักษณะความเป็นนวัตกร เมื่อได้รับการจัดการเรียนรู้โดยใช้การเรียนรู้แบบบูรณาการสะเต็มศึกษาร่วมกับการเรียนรู้โดยใช้โครงงานเป็นฐานโดยภาพรวมอยู่ในระดับดีมาก (2) แนวทางในการจัดการเรียนรู้ คือ (2.1) ให้นักเรียนสร้างเครือข่ายในการแลกเปลี่ยนความรู้ (2.2) ให้นักเรียนสร้างข้อตกลงร่วมกันในการถามคำถาม (2.3) การเพิ่มเวลาในการทำกิจกรรมกลุ่มและการนำเสนอผลงานทำให้นักเรียนคิดค้นนวัตกรรมและนำเสนอผลงานได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ (2.4) ครูควรมีบทบาทเป็นผู้นำกระบวนการเรียนรู้ในการดำเนินกิจกรรมอย่างมีส่วนร่วม (2.5) กระตุ้นให้นักเรียนเกิดความคิดที่สร้างสรรค์และบูรณาการความรู้ในศาสตร์ต่าง ๆ มาประยุกต์ในการสร้างผลงานที่เป็นนวัตกรรมจากการยกตัวอย่างสถานการณ์ปัญหาแนวทาง การแก้ปัญหาที่เคยมีผู้คิดไว้ก่อนหน้า และใช้คำถามที่ล้วงประสบการณ์เดิมของนักเรียน

The most important goal of teaching is student learning, passing on information from the instructor to the student so they can apply those concepts and skills months and years after instruction. However, this goal is not easily accomplished. Thinking and learning take significant effort and students often resist putting in the required work. Additionally, the increasingly diverse student population and recent disruptions to traditional classroom learning require instructional design to meet learning outcomes. The study of student misconceptions about physics concepts has long been an important area of inquiry in physics education research (PER). The research discussed in this dissertation builds upon the developments in PER by exploring the prevalence of consistently held undergraduate student misconceptions in introductory calculus-based physics. This thesis explores the nature of student misconceptions, mistakes, and naive answering patterns in both introductory undergraduate Newtonian mechanics and electromagnetism by applying a network analytic technique called module analysis to student responses to different concept inventories from institutions of various levels of incoming physics preparation.
