This study investigated the design cognition and performance results of secondary and post-secondary engineering students while engaged in an engineering design task. Relationships between prototype performance and design cognition were highlighted to investigate potential links between cognitive processes and success on engineering design problems. Concurrent think-aloud protocols were collected from eight secondary and 12 post-secondary engineering students working individually to design, make, and evaluate a solution prototype to an engineering design task. The authors are investigating potential applications of adaptive comparative judgment (ACJ) across numerous environments and learning scenarios within the Purdue Polytechnic Institute as part of Purdue’s efforts to transform the undergraduate learning experience. Six courses or program areas were selected for the study, involving a wide variation in subjects, subject matter, and assessment artifacts. The authors anticipate that positive results from these pilot studies will encourage broader and deeper applications of ACJ in the Purdue Polytechnic, across Purdue University, and in other academic institutions. Results from these scenarios will be disseminated in future conferences and scholarly journals.

The low test scores on third graders' Illinois State Assessment Test (ISAT) is a concern in the Allgood Elementary School community. Thirty percent of third graders are retained because they do not meet the standard on the ISAT. A technology-assisted reading program, Study Island, was implemented to increase reading proficiency. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was an improvement in standardized test performance after the implementation of Study Island for the academic school years 2009-2012. การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) ศึกษากระบวนการถ่ายทอดการบรรเลงเดี่ยวระนาดเอกของครูพินิจ ฉายสุวรรณ ศิลปินแห่งชาติ 2) สร้างคู่มือการถ่ายทอดการบรรเลงเดี่ยวระนาดเอกตามแนวทางของครูพินิจ ฉายสุวรรณ ศิลปินแห่งชาติ วิธีการดำเนินการวิจัยใช้ระเบียบวิธีการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ เก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลโดยการศึกษาเอกสาร และการสัมภาษณ์ (interview) วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลด้วยวิธีการตีความข้อมูล (interpretation) สร้างข้อสรุปและนำเสนอเป็นความเรียง ผลการวิจัยพบว่า 1. ครูพินิจ ฉายสุวรรณ เป็นศิลปินผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านดนตรีปี่พาทย์ทั้งภาคทฤษฎี ภาคปฏิบัติ และการถ่ายทอด โดยเฉพาะเครื่องมือระนาดเอก ได้รับการยกย่องว่ามีความเป็นเลิศ ครูพินิจได้รับการถ่ายทอดการบรรเลงเดี่ยวระนาดเอกจากครูสอน วงฆ้อง ครูพริ้ง ดนตรีรส และครูเชื้อ ดนตรีรส โดยครูทั้งสามท่านนี้เป็นลูกศิษย์โดยตรงของพระยาเสนาะดุริยางค์ ในช่วงหลังขณะที่ครูพินิจรับราชการประจำอยู่ที่วงดนตรีไทยกรุงเทพมหานคร ท่านได้รับการถ่ายทอดบทเพลงเดี่ยวต่าง ๆ จากครูบุญยงค์ เกตุคง รวมทั้งได้ต่อเพลงเดี่ยวเพิ่มเติมกับครูท่านอื่น ๆ ด้วย เช่น ครูบุญช่วย ชิตท้วม ครูสนิท ลัดดาอ่อน เป็นต้น ลูกศิษย์ที่ได้รับการถ่ายทอดการบรรเลงเดี่ยวระนาดเอกจากครูพินิจต้องมีพื้นฐานการบรรเลงระนาดเอกมาก่อนในระดับหนึ่ง ในการถ่ายทอดบทเพลง ครูพินิจเป็นผู้พิจารณาว่าผู้เรียนแต่ละคนเหมาะสมกับบทเพลงใด สำหรับหลักการถ่ายทอดทักษะการบรรเลงเดี่ยวระนาดเอกของครูพินิจ ฉายสุวรรณ มี 3 ประการ ได้แก่ 1) สอนตามสติปัญญาและความสามารถ 2) เน้นเรื่องรสมือของผู้เรียนที่ควรเป็นไปตามธรรมชาติของแต่ละคน 3) เน้นการบรรเลงที่ถูกต้องชัดเจนไพเราะและได้อรรถรสของบทเพลง 2. คู่มือการถ่ายทอดการบรรเลงเดี่ยวระนาดเอกของครูพินิจ ฉายสุวรรณ ศิลปินแห่งชาติ ประกอบด้วย คำชี้แจงในคู่มือ เนื้อหาสาระเกี่ยวกับเนื้อหาที่เป็นความรู้ความเข้าใจในการนำไปถ่ายทอดสำหรับผู้สอน และการนำไปฝึกทักษะการบรรเลงเดี่ยวระนาดเอกสำหรับผู้เรียนตามแนวทางของครูพินิจ ฉายสุวรรณ ศิลปินแห่งชาติ ขั้นตอนการถ่ายทอดและการฝึกทักษะการบรรเลงเดี่ยวระนาด การวัดและประเมินผล และแหล่งอ้างอิง

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine how teachers from various levels of technology self-efficacy perceive and implement technology within their specific classroom. Using a qualitative approach, I explored four public schools from a medium to large-sized school district in the Southeastern United States. The Technology Integration Confidence Scale (TICS) was used to purposively select 10 secondary teachers from the west side of Beach County (a pseudonym). Most teachers provide feedback for students daily. Whether it be a word of encouragement or a lengthy written comment in the margin of an essay, feedback is essential in first-year writing courses. This study investigates two distinct types of feedback, audio (a subset of oral feedback) and written (marginal comments and end comments). For this analysis, two instructors produced samples of audio feedback for students in their English 101 class sections (39 students total). The comments were then transcribed and compared with written comments left for the student by the same teacher on the same assignments. Students completed a follow-up …

In this article, we present tips for creating a thriving undergraduate and graduate communication research lab. Based on our experiences developing and co-directing the Communication and Social Robotics Labs (CSRLs), we offer 10 best practices for acquiring resources and recognition, building a strong lab community, and attaining faculty and student goals for scholarship and beyond. Service-learning combines the learning goals of a course with service to the community. Through service-learning, students engage in action and reflect on their experiences in order to connect what they see and do in the community with what they are learning in their courses. Whether service-learning projects account for part of a course or an entire course is centered on service-learning, service-learning works because it connects theory with practice. Service-learning is an important pedagogy because it offers students a chance to do meaningful work that helps their community and teaches them the importance of civic engagement.

As a pedagogy, service-learning connects students with the community while focusing on course outcomes. The community becomes a live text for reflection and enriches students’ experiences they otherwise would not have in the classroom. This article provides tips and strategies for implementing service-learning in the classroom. These tips and strategies include developing the structure of the course, linking service-learning to outcomes, creating partnerships, working through logistics with partners, communicating with community partners, setting logistics, preparing students, creating reflections, handling challenging issues, giving credit for the learning, and assessing service-learning.

This essay explores unique practices for teaching relational ethics through storytelling. Drawing from my experiences teaching an advanced undergraduate Narrative Ethics seminar, I explain how my students responded to a storytelling unit through which they examined their values and storytelling ethics.
