Amy Goodman is an award-winning investigative journalist, author, syndicated columnist and host of Democracy Now!, airing on more than 800 public television and radio stations worldwide. She is the first journalist to receive the Right Livelihood Award, widely known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize,” for “developing an innovative model of truly independent grassroots political journalism that brings to millions of people the alternative voices that are often excluded by the mainstream media.”

In theory, a strong democracy rests on robust citizen participation. The practice in most democracies is quite different. This gap presents a challenge, which can be narrowed by augmenting civic education to bring it up to date with the current information environment and thus give citizens the opportunity to participate. Robert Dahl’s work on democracy provides a model that looks at this problem structurally. He writes about the ideals and the actual institutions necessary for a democracy and if we situate his model in the modern information environment we get a better idea of how to improve civic education. Once again, a prominent politician from Florida has provided an excellent opportunity to talk about the value of a liberal arts education.

In 2011, Florida Gov. Rick Scott commented about not needing any more anthropology majors. Around the same time, Florida State Sen. Don Gaetz referred to psychology and political science majors as “degrees that don’t mean much.” [excerpt]

This study investigated mentoring strategies in use for professional development of librarians in federal Universities in North-Central Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted. Population of the study was 107 professional librarians. Four research questions guided the study. Instrument for data collection were: structured questionnaire and an interview schedule. Data obtained were analyzed using mean ratings. Major findings include: informal mentoring strategy is the main strategy in use for professional development of librarians in these universities, many benefits accrue from mentoring, yet there are challenges affecting it. Though the trend of greenhouse gas emission is declining, the equivalent of 6,870 million metric tons of CO₂ was emitted in the United States in 2014.[1] About one quarter of this pollution is emitted by the transportation sector.[2] Instead of waiting for the next technological development in transportation to provide us with clean vehicles, what if we could adopt past transportation systems to reduce our emissions and increase future sustainability? The use of behavioral assessment tools, in the hiring process, has become a common practice for many private and public employers with the goal of finding the right fit for their organization and reducing employee turnover. This study re-examines the use of behavioral assessment tools for employee selection. Through secondary analysis, and evaluating the hiring data of a local municipality who uses these tools as part of their hiring process, I was able to determine the effectiveness of behavioral assessments in candidate selection. The purpose of the study is to determine if the effects of using reading racetrack paired with flashcards and the enhancement of Smartboard technology with three-second time delay will increase the accuracy of Dolch Sight Word reading. The first participant was a second grade male diagnosed with an intellectual disability. The second participant was a fourth grade female born with Down syndrome and diagnosed with an intellectual disability. Data were taken on corrects and errors of selected sight words on a pre-test and posttest and during intervention. A generalization probe was conducted to see if they could read the 28 …
