Analyzing Teachers' Technological Pedagogical And Content Knowledge, Diana Minerva Camberos

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This qualitative study analyzes the ways a professional development course entitled Sol y Agua helped teachers to acquire technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK) and to implement technology in their classroom. This study also analyzes the experiences teachers had in the workshop and the recommendations they had to improve the workshop. TPACK is a framework which denotes that teachers have a deep understanding of how to represent content using technology, and that the technology is used effectively to teach the content knowledge. Technology is integrated as a component of the teacher content knowledge and the teaching topic, and not as …

Weaving A Localized Context Of Use: What It Means For Instructional Design, John Baaki, Monica W. Tracey 2019 Old Dominion University

Weaving A Localized Context Of Use: What It Means For Instructional Design, John Baaki, Monica W. Tracey

STEMPS Faculty Publications

The purpose of our manuscript is to probe what a localized context of use means for instructional design practice and of environments in which learning occurs. A localized context of use emphasizes specific moments of use where context is scaled back to what is needed in a situation or moment. We begin by looking at the evolution of context of design. We review context in instructional design since Tessmer and Richey's (1997) contextual approach to instruction. We then present our localized context of use through the actions of a learner and a designer, provide applications for practice, and implications for …

Simulation As A Remediation Tool For Clinically At-Risk Associate Degree Nursing Students, Janna G. Lock

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Evidence-based remediation options are limited for nursing students who fail their clinical competency evaluations. Scholarly literature provides a paucity of studies related to the use of simulation-based technology to remediate nursing students. The research question focused on the difference in the initial competency demonstration evaluation scores of associate degree nursing students compared to the reevaluation scores after remediation with simulation-based technology. Benner's novice to expert and Kolb's experiential learning theories were used to explain how nurses acquire and develop skills. The researcher used a quantitative one-group pretest posttest design to examine archival data from 149 nursing students from a South-Central …

Perceptions Of International Students In Poland Regarding Flipped Classrooms, Mustafa Alper Sarli 2019 Walden University

Perceptions Of International Students In Poland Regarding Flipped Classrooms, Mustafa Alper Sarli

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many international higher education students do not study in their native languages. Unlike their peers who would only worry about the content of the course, they also struggle with the difficulties of the language of instruction. Flipped classrooms, providing students with the learning materials prior to the class, may assist in alleviating the academic burden and the language challenge the international students are experiencing. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into how flipped classrooms may help international students with course engagement and their adaptation processes. The conceptual framework was Keller's personalized system of instruction. The research questions …

Policy Knowledge Communication In Nursing, Curtiss John Vavra 2019 Walden University

Policy Knowledge Communication In Nursing, Curtiss John Vavra

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Evidence-based practices in nursing improve patient outcomes, decrease healthcare costs, and can be implemented with policies and procedures. However, there is limited literature describing how nurses acquire policy knowledge, the dissemination of which may require a significant investment of resources by a hospital. The purpose of this study was to learn more about how nurses obtain policy knowledge. Rogers's diffusion of innovations theory guided the examination of communication channels and how they relate to the formation of policy knowledge. The research questions were designed to gather information on the relationship of policy communication channels, demographic factors, and the frequency of …

Teachers' And Students' Perspectives About Patterns Of Interaction, Ena Smith

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Social interaction is key to students' learning in blending learning discussions. Although there is research on interactions in online courses and traditional classes, there is little on whether blended learning discussions are meeting students' social interaction and educational development needs. The purpose of this multicase study was to examine attitudes of first-year and final-year business and technology students and faculty members for patterns of interaction and knowledge construction. The study was conducted in the northeastern United States. Piaget's cognitive constructivism, Vygotsky's social constructivism, and Knowles's andragogy constituted the conceptual framework. Using maximum variation sampling, participants were 8 students and 4 …
