Recognizing Campus Landscapes As Learning Spaces, Kathleen G. Scholl, Gowri Betrabet Gulwadi

Faculty Publications

American higher education institutions face unique twenty-first century changes and challenges in providing good, holistic learning spaces for the diverse and evolving needs of today’s college student. Continued enrollment growth, societal and technological changes, financial challenges, and a need for increased universal and open access create ever more diverse, changing and complex US university systems. In 2009, 20.4 million students were enrolled in 2- or 4-year colleges and universities. By 2019, enrollments are expected to rise 9% for students under age 25, and rise 23% for students over the age of 25 (Snyder & Dillow, 2011). Questions of where, when, …

Quality Of Life And Mental Health Outcomes In Implanted Cardioverter Defibrillator Treatment: Potential Effects Of Informational Media History And Treatment Knowledge, Christopher E. Knoepke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Social workers in all care venues are increasingly responsible for clinical and case management services for people being treated with sophisticated medical interventions. Unfortunately, opportunities to aid in the promotion of quality of life (QOL), mental health, and informed consent are often not understood by social workers, other care providers, or patients. These missed opportunities may lead to attenuated effectiveness of medical interventions and negative impact on patients' QOL. One such technological treatment is the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), a lifesaving therapy which carries risk to patients' QOL. Moreover, patients frequently do not accurately understand the benefits, limitations, and possible …

Students' Perspectives Of Physical Education And Fitness, Heidi M. Leland 2015 Augsburg College

Students' Perspectives Of Physical Education And Fitness, Heidi M. Leland

Theses and Graduate Projects

Physical education has been shown to positively increase students' social, emotional, and cognitive domains as well as their physical health. Despite these unarguable results, physical education class continues to be reduced in schools. Obesity rates are at an all-time high and for the first time in our history, the generation of children 10-12 years old is projected to live five years less than their parents. Teachers cannot tackle this huge task on their own, they need more support, time and resources, and we need to hear first-hand from the children. Through qualitative methods using interviews and descriptive analysis, this study …

The Perceptions, Knowledge, Benefits And Barriers Of Hispanics Regarding The Dietary Guidelines For Americans, Luisyana De Amor Gamboa

Theses and Dissertations--Nutrition and Food Systems

Background: Hispanics are the largest minority group in the U.S. and by the year 2060 the number of Hispanics is projected to double. They are disproportionately affected by obesity and chronic diseases which translate into decreased quality of life, loss of work opportunities and perceptions of injustice for the Hispanic population. The Dietary Guidelines (DG) provide information to help Americans make healthy food and physical activity choices and if followed can be a means of reducing the health disparity gap. However, culturally relevant recommendations specific to Hispanics’ health and nutritional habits are often lacking. The purpose of this study was …

Phase Imaging Using X-Ray Optics, Bushra Kanwal 2015 University at Albany, State University of New York

Phase Imaging Using X-Ray Optics, Bushra Kanwal

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Conventional x-ray imaging is a widely used imaging technique in medical diagnostics as well as material analysis. It utilizes only absorption-contrast imaging, which records intensity attenuation due to absorption. A major limitation of this technique for medical imaging is the poor contrast of weakly absorbing details in the soft tissue. Mammography and angiography are two examples where improved contrast is required. In the quest for better contrast in x-ray imaging, a number of different phase contrast imaging techniques have been explored. Phase contrast imaging offers an improvement over traditional absorption contrast because the x-ray wave field traversing an object experiences …
