BACKGROUND: There is a higher risk of post-concussion syndrome among minor athletes. This has resulted in The Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT), which is currently the primary test for collegiate and high school athletes for concussion assessment and return to play. Previous work from our lab has indicated a significant detection of cognitive deficit with a battery of cognitive testing including the Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA) and dual task testing incorporating balance testing along with the Stroop and number recall. In the previous findings these tests identified cognitive decline including reaction time and fine motor deficiencies …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
BACKGROUND: Essential amino acids have been known to be necessary for protein nutrition whether they are obtained by eating proteins or by a formula of the essential amino acids. Studies have consistently demonstrated the acute benefits of protein supplementation on post-exercise muscle anabolism, which may facilitate the recovery of muscle function and performance. However, when protein supplements have been provided in research studies, acute changes in post-exercise protein synthesis and anabolic intracellular signaling have not resulted in measureable reductions in muscle damage and enhanced recovery of muscle function. PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to implement a specific content …

Assessment Of Multiple Concussive Athletes With Dual Task Triple Stroop And Aerobic Exercise, Sierra Duran, Sarah A. Massey, Ariel Gomez, Matthew A. Barlow 5622543
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
BACKGROUND: Athletic concussion testing has mostly recently relied on a sedentary computer neurocognitive test battery called the Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT). Previous tests directly compare baseline with post-concussion analysis of patient in regards to different cognitive aspects including; working memory, processing speed, and response time. No physical tests are included in the ImPACT analysis for return-to-play action. PURPOSE: In previous studies from our lab in these populations we concluded that the combination of a physical neural impediment with cognitive tests (dual-task with balance impairment) created a greater degree of impairment not observed in the sedentary ImPACT test. …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Generally, acute bouts of aerobic exercise have been shown to enhance psychological measures of emotion, mood, and affect. Previous investigations suggest that perceived stress and arousal levels are especially influenced by exercise. Interestingly, very few studies have examined the influence of exercise on attention and whether changes in stress and arousal may augment adaptations in attentional orientation that are often required during exercise. Furthermore, very little is known about the timing of the effects of exercise on these psychological outcomes. PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this study was to examine the effects of low-intensity aerobic exercise on stress, arousal, and …

BACKGROUND: Postprandial glucose levels are more predictive of cardiovascular disease (CVD) than fasting levels and elevated postprandial glucose negatively impacts vascular reactivity and endothelial function. Chronic high consumption of milk and dairy products are associated with reduced risk of diabetes and CVD due, in part, to changes in peripheral vasodilation and hemodynamics. PUROSE: To determine whether a single serving of non-fat milk could attenuate postprandial hyperglycemia independent of its protein content. METHODS: In a randomized controlled crossover study, twenty-nine overweight/obese adults had their body composition determined via DEXA and completed an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) of …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Loss of skeletal muscle function is a key factor contributing to reduced mobility and quality of life in aging individuals. While the exact mechanism remains unclear, impaired skeletal muscle oxidative capacity has been shown to play a major role. Exercise training increases oxidative capacity early in life; however, the potential for exercise to improve oxidative capacity later in life remains equivocal. PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis that 4 weeks of exercise training can improve skeletal muscle oxidative capacity in elderly individuals beyond the 6th decade of life. METHODS: To-date, 4 community-dwelling seniors from the local Dallas-Fort Worth …

Bone is a dynamic tissue that responds to mechanical loads placed on it. For populations with extensive periods of disuse, like those in prolonged bed rest and astronauts during long-duration spaceflight, significant bone loss can occur. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of prolonged disuse on weight-bearing bones and the length of time needed to recover disuse-induced bone loss utilizing the hindlimb unloading (HU) method in young rodents. We hypothesized that hindlimb bone mass would partially recover to age-matched control levels by 14 days of recovery following prolonged disuse and fully recover by 90 days of …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The expected lifespan of persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH) has increased significantly due to improved treatment options. However, an unintended consequence has been an increased prevalence of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). It is therefore important to explore the underlying biological mechanisms for this increased risk of T2D among PLWH since it is not yet well understood. Investigation of specific biomarkers could help define the pathogenesis of T2D in PLWH and yield many positive outcomes including the detection of ‘at risk’ individuals as targets of early interventional strategies along with identification of new diagnostic …
