Reciprocal Teaching is an instructional activity that takes place between students and teachers while reading segments of text. The dialogue is lead by the actions of predicting, clarifying, questioning, and summarizing. The teachers trains the students in the four actions, or strategies, and then gradually releases responsibility to the students according to their maturity and readiness levels. The purpose of this paper was to examine how three teachers from a school district in Minnesota used the concept of Reciprocal Teaching in their classrooms. Just as the population of Minnesota students in inner-city and first ring-suburban high schools continues to grow more diverse in ethnicity, socioeconomic status, ability, interest and motivation, so too grows the expectation that all students show adequate yearly progress. Given the important challenge of holding all different types of students to the same rigorous academic standard and with the goal of maximizing individual reading comprehension growth, a series of differentiated units was developed using data from the Northwest Evaluation Association's (NWEA) Measuring Academic Progress (MAP) test. This Technical Report and User Guide is the culmination of an evaluation investigating the effectiveness of KidsMatter Primary, involving over 5000 participants in 100 Australian primary schools over a two year period. It brings together an extensive data gathering exercise and presents technical aspects of the statistical and thematic analyses used in the KidsMatter Evaluation Final. Out-of-school time constitutes a major context of social and emotional development for children across cultures. Because it is not constrained by school attendance, weekend time allows cultural and gender differences in time usage to emerge. In this study, children's weekend activities, choice, and some of the related emotional outcomes were examined for fourth-grade students in four countries. A total of 1,265 children of families from middle socioeconomic status in Bulgaria, Taiwan, Turkey, and the United States completed an activity survey asking them to state their typical activity for each of 12 hours on Saturday, their enjoyment of the activity, and …

The purpose of this study was to examine student recall of facts, along with enjoyment of reading and interest in the topic when using graphic novels as compared to illustrated nonfiction prose in social studies content area reading. Twenty-two fifth grade students (13 f, 9 m) in a public school in a Midwestern state participated in the study. Half of the students read about the Boston Massacre and Patrick Henry through graphic novels and read about Paul Revere and the Boston Tea Party with illustrated nonfiction texts, with the other half doing the opposite. This study examined teacher talk and actions under two conditions: ( 1) subject-integrated lessons of an integrated curriculum unit on African culture ( experimental condition); and (2) single subject-focused lessons of a traditional separate subject curriculum on mathematics time and money measurement (control condition). The study sought to define and compare characteristics of both curriculum approaches. Although the study was primarily qualitative with observations being recorded by the researcher that were subsequently sorted into categories through a constant comparison method, counts of frequency of observations in categories were recorded, resulting in a mixed-methods design.

A trend in the decline of proficiency levels, as measured by the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS), exists at the sixth grade in both Mathematics and Reading Comprehension across the state of Iowa (Adequate Yearly Progress Statistics (2006–2008) [Data File] Des Moines, IA: Iowa Department of Education).
