This overview chapter provides an introduction to instructional theories, strategies, and technologies that can guide teachers new to teaching mathematics (both content and methods) online in a formal online classroom setting. We begin by discussing different types of online learning environments, including synchronous, asynchronous, bichronous, and HyFlex environments. We then focus on different theories, such as cognitive apprenticeship, individualized/personalized instruction, social learning, and inquiry-based mathematics education theories. After that, we focus on some common technologies and strategies, such as think/pair/share, student groups, whiteboards, discussion boards, and more that someone new to teaching mathematics teachers online may use to engage learners.

This issue brief is the third and final in a series published by the Metropolitan Educational Research Consortium (MERC) addressing digital equity in K-12 schools. It examines research regarding students’ use of and outcomes related to technology. Research finds that inequities exist in use and outcomes for students based on gender, language, ability, race, SES and other sociocultural factors. Based on these inequities, theoretical and practical recommendations are discussed.

The growing use of digital video for online learning among US higher education instructors accelerated as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic raising questions about instructors’ knowledge of video creation principles (Bétrancourt & Benetos, 2018; Chorianopoulos, 2018; Kay, 2012; McCormack, 2020; Seaman, et al, 2018). Those who teach online are often concerned with preservice or in‐service teacher development, specifically the lack of specialized opportunities focusing on online instructional practices. Online educators have acknowledged that this focus is limited and that the induction years of beginning teachers are an important component of teacher development. This mixed-method sequential explanatory study focused on the induction years of cyber charter teachers. It examined their perceptions of their induction program with the intention of adding to the literature in this under-examined area (Creswell, 2013). Online education has been around for several decades, but only recently has there been a boom in it integration into the public higher education sector on a larger scale. It proved instrumental to student education continuity and progression toward graduation during the COVID-19 health crisis and campus closures. Technological advances produce higher quality online courses that keep students engaged and allow for greater flexibility and accessibility, evident by its dramatic enrollment increase that outpaced the total enrollment at postsecondary institutions. School and district leaders were required to provide curriculum-driven technology professional development and support to teachers. This chapter presents the use of Lost & Found – a purpose-built tabletop to mobile game series – to teach medieval religious legal systems. The series aims to broaden the discourse around religious legal systems and to counter popular depiction of these systems which often promote prejudice and misnomers. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, faculty at a Hispanic serving institution shifted from face-to-face to totally online teaching. The authors describe two assignments for teacher candidates that required them to design and deliver lessons that focused on practicing two high-leverage practices utilizing Mursion, a mixed-reality simulation (MRS) software and platform. MRS sessions were delivered through Zoom video conferencing and were delivered asynchronously. Benefits, challenges, and limitations of using MRS in conjunction with Zoom in online courses were identified and discussed. การวิจัยนี้ครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) ศึกษาระดับสมรรถนะการรู้สารสนเทศทางการพยาบาลของนักศึกษาพยาบาล 2) พัฒนาโมเดลเชิงสาเหตุของสมรรถนะการรู้สารสนเทศทางการพยาบาลของนักศึกษาพยาบาล และ 3) ตรวจสอบความสอดคล้องของโมเดลฯ ที่พัฒนาขึ้นกับข้อมูลเชิงประจักษ์ โดยผู้วิจัยได้พัฒนาโมเดลเชิงสาเหตุของสมรรถนะการรู้สารสนเทศทางการพยาบาลของนักศึกษาพยาบาล กลุ่มตัวอย่าง คือ นักศึกษาพยาบาล ชั้นปีที่ 2 - 4 จำนวน 839 คน เครื่องมือที่ใช้ คือ แบบสอบถามเป็นมาตรประมาณค่า 5 ระดับ สถิติที่ใช้วิเคราะห์ข้อมูล คือ สถิติเชิงบรรยาย และการวิเคราะห์อิทธิพลด้วยโมเดลสมการโครงสร้าง (SEM) ผลการวิจัยพบว่า 1. ระดับสมรรถนะการรู้สารสนเทศทางการพยาบาลของนักศึกษาพยาบาล พบว่า นักศึกษาพยาบาลมีสมรรถนะการรู้สารสนเทศทางการพยาบาลโดยรวมอยู่ในระดับค่อนข้างสูง (M = 4.15 , SD = 0.68) 2. โมเดลเชิงสาเหตุของสมรรถนะการรู้สารสนเทศทางการพยาบาลของนักศึกษาพยาบาลที่พัฒนาขึ้น ประกอบด้วยปัจจัยที่มีอิทธิพลทางตรงต่อสมรรถนะการรู้สารสนเทศทางการพยาบาลของนักศึกษาพยาบาล ได้แก่ ปัจจัยด้านการรับรู้ความสามารถของตัวเองด้านการรู้เท่าทันสารสนเทศ (ß = 0.33) ซึ่งเป็นปัจจัยที่มีอิทธิพลสูงที่สุด รองลงมา คือ ปัจจัยด้านเจตคติต่อสารสนเทศ (ß = 0.31) ปัจจัยที่มีอิทธิพลน้อยที่สุด คือ และปัจจัยด้านการปฏิบัติโดยอิงหลักฐานเชิงประจักษ์ (ß = 0.16) ซึ่งโมเดลเชิงสาเหตุของสมรรถนะการรู้สารสนเทศทางการพยาบาลของนักศึกษาพยาบาลที่พัฒนาขึ้นมีความสอดคล้องกับข้อมูลเชิงประจักษ์ (X2 (df=32, N=839) = 117.36, p = .000, CFI = 0.997, GFI = 0.980, AGFI = 0.936, RMSEA = 0.056, SRMR = 0.026)

This qualitative case study examined teachers’ perceptions and use of adaptive diagnostic assessment for improving teaching and learning of elementary level mathematics. Specifically, this case study was conducted at some of the leading primary schools in a Midwestern school district. TPACK theory was used as the theoretical framework for this case study to provide an understanding of how the teaching and learning of mathematics occurs in the classroom and the changes that occur due to the implementation of adaptive diagnostic assessments. Digital technologies are key tools that can be used to extend and enhance teaching and learning. However, empirical evidence show educators are unclear how to integrate technology and it is often used to support past teaching practices. Designbased research (DBR) involving a grounded theory design was used to construct a set of seven detailed education technology standards to provide guidance on how technology should be integrated and a set of 24 examples as indicators of these standards.
