Writing As An Altered State Of Consciousness: Process, Pedagogy, And Spirituality, Julie Kearney

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

Defining writing as an altered state of consciousness (ASC), this essay examines parallels between expressivist writing pedagogy and theories of psychologists Csikszentmihalyi and Tart. It further describes the benefits for writers who achieve ASC in terms of their learning potential and creative power.

Divorce impacts millions of families each year. The experience of a divorce is a process rather than a single event. Children and adolescents experience the divorce process differently. Children often go through five grieving stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. 837 students from two suburban middle schools in southeast Michigan participated in this study to assess bully/victim behavior. Sixth and seventh grade students were assessed along a continuum of interpersonal behavior (social information processing, emotion-related regulation, and social skills). The Olweus Bully/Victim measure was used to assess bully/victim tendencies. The school climate measure was used to assess whether student perceptions of their school environment mediated bully/victim outcomes. School climate mediated bully/victim and victim behaviors; bully and bully/victims shared aggressive and hostile social information processing and aggressive behavior. Out-of-school time constitutes a major context of social and emotional development for children across cultures. Because it is not constrained by school attendance, weekend time allows cultural and gender differences in time usage to emerge. In this study, children's weekend activities, choice, and some of the related emotional outcomes were examined for fourth-grade students in four countries. This causal-comparative study with a narrative component investigated the effect athletic participation on the academic achievement of senior student-athletes and non-athletes who attended three public high schools in Eastern Tennessee. The impetus for the study was the conflicting research as it relates to the impact athletics participation had on academic success at the college and high school levels. Through student athlete and non-athlete comparisons of ACT scores and GPAs, the researcher found athletic participation did not affect academic achievement for high school seniors who graduated in 2009 from the three target high schools when compared to non-athletes. This essay describes a forgiveness course taught in prisons and on college campuses. The course served as a bridge for Endicott College students and inmates from the Maine Correctional Center at Windham, highlighting how deep listening may reduce violence and promote understanding.

Technological innovations have spurred exponential use of electronic resources for learners of all ages over the last decade. These global developments also require continual advancement of electronic e-learning evaluation. Evaluation is the process of clarifying what should be and comparing that to what is, to facilitate evaluative decisions about success and ways to achieve it. This article outlines a process for doing evaluations of e-learning and identifies common critical-evaluation elements. An extended case vignette of an e-learning evaluation and references to others and related literature illustrate the use of these critical elements and associated emerging results.
