Journal of Research on the College President
This review of the literature related to the contemporary college president attempted to describe changes to the presidential role during the past 30 years. In addition to describing changes to the role, the review explores the personal, organizational, interpersonal, and leadership skills required for leading a contemporary university. The findings particularly note that with the changing demands for accountability in higher education, presidents are being forced to spend more of their time and be more focused on issues of finance, law, and public interactions. These issues tend to collide in discussions of public policy and within the framework of state …

Power Of The Faculty: Consequences Of No Confidence Votes For College Presidents, Daniel Nadler, Mei-Yan Lu Ph.D., Michael T. Miller
Journal of Research on the College President
The roles of college faculty members have changed, often in relation to increased specialization of their functions as either teachers or researchers. Similarly, the college presidency has changed, relying less on faculty interactions and increasing reliance and interaction on external stakeholders. The result is a less faculty-centric college presidency. The faculty, however, still have significant expectations for involvement with the college president and have the use of a noconfidence vote to express their opinions about the performance of the individual in the presidential position. Drawing upon a sample of faculty senate leaders, the current study found that few of these …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This non-experimental, descriptive study explored the perceptions of PK-12 policymakers in West Virginia regarding the sources of information they use in the decision-making process; whether and how evidence-based research is relied upon; whether evidence-based research is considered credible and usable; and what barriers, facilitators, and demographic data may play roles in the decision-making process. Data were collected from a 15-question researcher-created survey administered to nearly 200 county board of education members. Results indicated that while policymakers think evidence-based research is important, they nonetheless use it less than other types of information. Consumers consider research reports too lengthy. Respondents indicated they …

Instructional Coaching And Reflective Practice, Jessica Marie Cabak
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Instructional coaching as a mode of professional development has gained popularity among school districts for its job-embedded, ongoing nature (Knight, 2012). Absent from the field is an effective method of measuring the impact of coaching. In attempting to isolate a variable that is high leverage, the reflective practice of teachers was examined. The study used a teacher survey to collect data on various aspects of a coaching program and teacher reflectiveness. There was not enough evidence to confirm that reflective practice makes any difference in coaching participation, frequency, or the perceived value of coaching. It is worth noting that almost …

Establishing And Maintaining Collective Faculty Trust In The High School Principal, Brenda M. Damiani
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study explored the process by which high school principals established and maintained collective faculty trust in the principal (FTP). High school principals face the challenge of establishing FTP in settings generally larger than their colleagues in elementary and middle schools which can impact the level of trust. The rich descriptions from participants about the process by which they established and maintained FTP adds to the limited qualitative literature about FTP, especially in the context of high schools. The findings from this study can serve as a guide to new and experienced high school principals as they establish and maintain …

How Do Different Stakeholder Groups Describe Their Feelings About Low-Ability Math Groups?, Maria B. Kreie Arago
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Two significant challenges confronting math educators in the United States today are overall achievement rates that lag behind many countries, and a sizeable achievement gap between White students and students of color. Research provides some explanations for these trends and ideas for reversing them, but it is rare to hear from students themselves. This qualitative phenomenological study gave voice to middle school students enrolled in lower-level math classes. Through a series of focus groups, students shared their feelings about math, perceptions of their math abilities, and instructional practices they find helpful. This study also included parent and teacher perspectives on …
