The Inevitability Of Playing Politics As Chair: 2018, Domenick Pinto

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

Politics is a term often frowned upon as it pertains to the role of an academic leader. However as chair and now director of a school for 30 years it has become an essential yet sometimes unwanted aspect of the daily rigors of the position. This workshop explores the pros and cons of “playing politics” as a department chair and allows interactivity among participants in “what if” scenarios citing various literature references along the way

Integration, Not Gentrification: Using Participatory Action Research To Foster Democratic Leadership In An Urban Pta, Courtney E. Wait 2018 Fort Worth ISD, McLean 6th Grade Center

Integration, Not Gentrification: Using Participatory Action Research To Foster Democratic Leadership In An Urban Pta, Courtney E. Wait

Diversity, Social Justice, and the Educational Leader

This study explores the relationship of a new Parent Teacher Association (PTA) to a historically low-income public school in a gentrifying neighborhood. The PTA was formed by a group of white middle class parents who did not reflect the broader school population. To serve diverse communities, school leaders need to organize families to participate in the school democratically. Utilizing Participatory Action Research (PAR), this study demonstrates that there are no shortcuts to building more democratic parental participation in diverse urban schools: communities need to engage in collaborative inquiry to dismantle barriers to involvement, strengthen the connection between home and school, …

Equity And Inclusion: Expanding The Urban Ecosystem, Tia Brown Mcnair, Judith A. Ramaley

Public Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations

As our nation grows ever more diverse, the need to ensure that our educational institutions are truly equitable and inclusive becomes more and more urgent. This sense of urgency plays out across a social and political terrain that threatens the very core of our identity as a nation. Our growing diversity is seen by some as a threat to our national security and as the primary cause behind the displacements and angers being created by the ever growing differences that are dividing our country. Our authors see our growing diversity as a much needed and valued source of energy, creativity …

Theses and Dissertations

Societal expectations center upon the belief that children in grade four should be competent in terms of literacy skills and having acquired the necessary foundational skills to be successful in grade four. Instructional practices, reading programs and resources are linked to reading achievement and literacy acquisition of students. In Southwest Georgia, teachers’ instructional practices from twelve schools in urban Dougherty County were examined. The researcher examined the instructional practices of fourth grade reading teachers in the Dougherty County School System to determine the perceived impact on reading achievement and literacy acquisition of struggling fourth grade readers. “I Feed You. I Clothe You. I Send You To School”: Barriers To Involvement Of Low-Income Minority, And Immigrant Parents For The Academic Achievement Of Their Children, Myrtle Dickson 2018 CUNY Graduate Center

“I Feed You. I Clothe You. I Send You To School”: Barriers To Involvement Of Low-Income Minority, And Immigrant Parents For The Academic Achievement Of Their Children, Myrtle Dickson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Parental involvement has long been held as a critical variable in the academic outcomes of students. While research in this area consistently cites the positive impact of parental involvement across all racial/ethnic and socioeconomic groups, much still remain to be discovered regarding the parental involvement as well as the cultural parental practices that are unique to low income African American, Hispanic, and immigrant parents and families. Furthermore, this population of parents faces barriers to involvement that provide challenges not only for families but also for schools. Administrators and teachers in the k-12 settings must still consider the forms of capital …

Fear, Anxiety, And The 2016 Presidential Election: What Are The Effects On Student Achievement?, Kayla Mette, Katherine Bertolini 2018 South Dakota State University

Fear, Anxiety, And The 2016 Presidential Election: What Are The Effects On Student Achievement?, Kayla Mette, Katherine Bertolini

Empowering Research for Educators

The student fear and anxiety exhibited in the aftermath of the recent election are unlike anything most teachers have seen. The long-term ramifications of persistent fear and anxiety are too serious to ignore. The academic consequences of living in a perpetual state of fear are dire and affect the most vulnerable students. Current literature relating to the impact fear and anxiety have on achievement is examined with suggestions for teachers and administrators wanting to better inoculate their students against the deleterious effects of stress, fear and anxiety. This article issues an urgent call for increased examination of this phenomenon.

Shifting The Paradigm From Deficit Oriented Schools To Asset Based Models: Why Leaders Need To Promote An Asset Orientation In Our Schools, Shannon Renkly, Katherine Bertolini 2018 South Dakota State University

Shifting The Paradigm From Deficit Oriented Schools To Asset Based Models: Why Leaders Need To Promote An Asset Orientation In Our Schools, Shannon Renkly, Katherine Bertolini

Empowering Research for Educators

Schools often focus solely on risky behaviors exhibited by students, causing the school to act reactively rather than proactively. Student learning and growth must be the top priority of a school, and this can only be done by deliberately identifying and building up student assets. This asset model becomes even more important during the middle years of education. Introducing supportive adults into students’ lives is an effective method of building assets, while creating the potential for community involvement at the same time. School leaders must take charge of promoting asset-building in their school while also modelling asset development with their …

A Program For Teacher Induction, Patricia Lager 7701725, Katherine Bertolini

Empowering Research for Educators

Even though many novice teachers are prepared academically to deal with subject matter, many of them enter the teaching field unprepared for many of the other aspects of teaching such as dealing with grading programs, insurance claims, inventory and various other matters that differ from school-to-school. Often these new teachers feel isolated and unsupported and possibly do not realize what they do not know or the proper questions to ask. This results in nearly 29% of them leaving the field within their first three years and around 39% leaving within their first five years. This project proposes creating a teacher …

The Purpose Of Education: What Should An American 21st Century Education Value?, Krista Shilvock 2018 South Dakota State University

The Purpose Of Education: What Should An American 21st Century Education Value?, Krista Shilvock

Empowering Research for Educators

A survey taken by 511 respondents dealt with such issues as past and current educational practice preparation, educational purposes in America, core class subjects, and soft skill teachings. Its results revealed a public opinion believing the primary goal of education as teaching students to adapt to any situation they find themselves in. Other results include a lack of preparation in current practices for life beyond education, although workforce preparation is adequate. Also, soft skills ought to see a curriculum of their own and taught explicitly to students in education instead of implicitly enforced, hoping parents alone taught these skills previously. …
