The Digital Self: A Qualitative Approach To Studying Female College Students' Use Of Social-Networking Platforms, Megan Christine Gore 2018 Eastern Michigan University

The Digital Self: A Qualitative Approach To Studying Female College Students' Use Of Social-Networking Platforms, Megan Christine Gore

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to understand how female college students make use of social networks, specifically how they use the medium to connect with others. Researching socialnetworking use pertaining to the phenomenon of connection will give a richer understanding of female students’ lived experience of social networking. Many quantitative studies have been conducted about social networking, but more qualitative measures are needed to explore social networking. With the continuously changing social-networking platforms, there is little research that sheds light on social-networking use among female college students. My goal was to conduct a qualitative research study that examined female …

Deaf In Her Own Way: The Role Of Identity In Social Justice Leadership, Judy Drescher 2018 Molloy University

Deaf In Her Own Way: The Role Of Identity In Social Justice Leadership, Judy Drescher

Student Coursework: Ed.D. program

The following fieldwork chronicles the personal and professional trajectory of Cindy Greenspun, a social justice leader at Yale University Library. At the age of eighteen months, Greenspun suffered an illness that resulted in the loss of her hearing and spent nearly the first half of her life fully immersed in the hearing world. Through significant self-reflection and perseverance, Greenspun evolved beyond the binary paradigm of oralism–the exclusive use of speech and lip reading–to ultimately embrace the essence of being both bilingual (speech and sign) and bicultural (hearing and non-hearing). These attributes not only enabled Greenspun to navigate between two distinctly …

Perspectives On Time Commitment To Fundraising By Community College Presidents, G. David Gearhart, Michael T. Miller 2018 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Perspectives On Time Commitment To Fundraising By Community College Presidents, G. David Gearhart, Michael T. Miller

Journal of Research on the College President

All types of higher education institutions have come to rely on some element of revenue diversification, and fundraising from private sources has become increasingly common and popular among community college presidents. Yet despite the growth in attention to fundraising, community colleges collectively only garner 2% of all philanthropic support to higher education. With the growing demand for private funds, community college presidents must understand how they are using their time for fundraising, and ultimately, the consequence of these fundraising efforts. The current study explored the time commitment of college presidents, finding that they spend as much as 30% of their …

What College Presidents Need To Know About Adult Learners In Higher Education, David Deggs 2018 Southern Methodist University

What College Presidents Need To Know About Adult Learners In Higher Education, David Deggs

Journal of Research on the College President

American higher education has undergone a metamorphosis over the past three decades that has resulted in the emergence of new paradigms for academic program content, modalities for instructional delivery, configuration and delivery of student services, and expansion of outreach models. Central to this metamorphosis is the adult learner in American higher education. Once thought to be the minority in American higher education, adult learners now comprise 74% of all undergraduate college students in the United States (Radford, Cominole & Skomsvold, 2015). This marked shift in the student demographics has caused many American higher education institutions to reconsider the mission, purpose …

Math Self-Efficacy Effects On Prisoners' Academic Achievement, Randall Peder Bergman 2018 Bethel University

Math Self-Efficacy Effects On Prisoners' Academic Achievement, Randall Peder Bergman

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined three hypothesized math-self efficacy (MSE) sources that inhibit adult basic education male prisoner mathematics achievement. Previous correctional studies indicated that United States prisoners tend to have low self-efficacy and therefore lower academic achievement (Greve & Enzmann, 2003). Adult education studies also indicated lower self-efficacy in adults older than age 20 who take coursework to complete their high school diploma (Jameson & Fusco, 2014). Survey studies of MSE factors from analysis showed that students who self-reported lower self-confidence, negative self-beliefs, increased math anxieties, and greater devaluation of math’s usefulness to their future employment have significant barriers to math …

The Arabic language is one of the significant world languages; it is the official language of 21 countries. Over three million people speak Arabic as a first language in the United States and almost all of them are native-born Americans (Sehlaoui, 2008). Taha (2007) indicated that 84.5% of international students and American students felt that learning Arabic was an asset because of the linguistic and cultural aspects. Arabic as a second language does not reach the same level of popularity as other world languages (Ryding, 2013). Students choose not to study Arabic due to the complex sociolinguistic situation in the …

The Effect Of Unfunded Tuition Discount On The Financial Health Of Very Small Colleges, Andrea L. Ide

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Very small colleges, under 750 students, are valuable and yet vulnerable institutions in American higher education. Without financial stability, very small colleges are more susceptible to failure in the face of economic challenges. Very small colleges adopt many of the same financial strategies used by larger colleges without consideration that the size of the college may require different strategies. This study considered the relationship between the unfunded tuition discount rate and the financial health of private, non-profit, four-year, baccalaureate colleges. Enrollment, institutional debt and institutional wealth were then used as moderators in a moderation regression analysis to determine the effect …

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Value-Added Models For Use In Annual Performance Appraisals: A Case Study, Theresa M. Pascual

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Motivating and retaining teachers is a critical element of the educational process. In 2011, Florida law required school administrators to implement a Valued-Added Model (VAM) for teacher evaluation, compensation, and retention decisions. However, the Florida VAM includes complex calculations to measure student learning progress. This qualitative case study was to explore teachers’ professional and personal perceptions of the VAM to determine teachers’ performance, compensation, and personnel consequences. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews with 12 teachers employed at a single Florida school district. Participants held a negative view on the use of VAM for teacher evaluations and merit pay determination. A …
