An Analysis Of African-American Faculty Experiences During The Tenure Process, Katrina M. Hubbard 2018 University of Missouri, St. Louis

An Analysis Of African-American Faculty Experiences During The Tenure Process, Katrina M. Hubbard

Dissertations

Abstract

How faculty allocate their time among research, teaching, and service, and the perceived quality of that work determines whether faculty obtain tenure or are released from the university (Bellas & Toutkoushian, 1999; Link, Swann, & Bozeman, 2008; Price & Cotten, 2006). Prior research indicated that African-American faculty comprised 4.5% of the faculty at high-activity research institutions and 3.5% of faculty at very-high-activity research institutions (The Chronicle of Higher Education Almanac 2016-2017, 2016).

The purpose of this study was to 1) document African-American faculty experiences during their tenure probationary period at PWI research institutions; 2) compare faculty experiences during the …

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The ninth grade is a transition year from middle school to high school where many students struggle to successfully navigate a new environment, new teachers and peers, new academic and behavioral expectations, and the concept of graduation requirements. This qualitative study examined the effects of academic track placement, and student levels of skill and will, on successful ninth-grade completion in one New Mexico Title I high school. It also provided insight into their perceptions of the success factors and challenges that they felt impacted their ability to successfully promote to the tenth-grade, and thus, remain on-track for graduation.

This study …

Grade Span Configuration And Academic Performance For Students In Poverty: A Texas Multiyear Analysis, M. Chad Jones, John R. Slate, George W. Moore, Cynthia Martinez-Garcia 2018 Iola Independent School District

Grade Span Configuration And Academic Performance For Students In Poverty: A Texas Multiyear Analysis, M. Chad Jones, John R. Slate, George W. Moore, Cynthia Martinez-Garcia

School Leadership Review

Grade-span configuration refers to the range of grades within a school (Coladarci & Hancock, 2002). The debate over the benefits of one grade span configuration over the other has ensued for decades (Howley, 2002). Specific questions in this debate are (a) Which grade span configuration is most cost effective?; (b) Which grade span configuration yields the best academic achievement?; and (c) Which grade span configuration best meets the social and emotional needs of middle level children? (Howley, 2002).

Differences In Dropout Rates As A Function Of High School Size For Students In Poverty: A Texas Multiyear, Statewide Study, Amy R. Ambrose, George W. Moore, John R. Slate, Cynthia Martinez-Garcia

School Leadership Review

Child poverty in the United States, with regard to student achievement, has grave challenges for the children who face poverty (Scott & Pressman, 2013). Not only is living in poverty associated with lower academic achievement, but student poverty is also associated with lower rates of school completion (Borg, Borg, & Stranahan, 2012; Cooper & Crosnoe, 2007; Kena et al., 2015). Consequentially, students who do not complete high school are more likely to (a) serve time in prison, (b) need government assistance, and/or ( c) die at an earlier age (Messacar & Oreopoulos, 2013). With the increasing number of children who …

Rural Superintendents' Experiences In The Application Of Principle-Centered Leadership At The Personal And Interpersonal Levels, Shelby Davidson, Jennifer T. Butcher

School Leadership Review

Covey ( 1990) suggested that to achieve success in leadership, one must identify core values and principles and ensure that managerial and organizational systems are aligned with these values and principles. These values explained by Covey in principle-centered leadership are built upon the foundation principles of trustworthiness at the personal level and trust at the interpersonal level, which allows for empowerment at the managerial level and alignment at the organizational level. Covey explained that trust or the lack of trust is the foundation of success or failure both in relationships as well as business, industry, education, and government. Combs, Edmonson, …

Leading Through Following: Understanding The Intersection Of Followership, Leadership And Collaboration, Jonte' C. Taylor, Doris Hill 2018 Pennsylvania State University

Leading Through Following: Understanding The Intersection Of Followership, Leadership And Collaboration, Jonte' C. Taylor, Doris Hill

School Leadership Review

There is a popular saying around education that, "a bad principal can convince a teacher to leave a good school; while a good principal can convince a teacher to stay at a bad school." In a blog post titled Teachers Quit Principals, Not Schools, Barnes (2017) writes about teacher and administrator interactions and how those relationships effect personal decision-making and school climate. Both the popular educational saying and Barnes's writing, while not directly, speak to the relationship between leaders and followers and how that dynamic sometimes plays out in educational settings. Broadly speaking, the dynamic between leadership and followership is …

Metacognitive Awareness And Mindset In Current And Future Principals, Tara L. Beziat, Yvette Bynum, Erin F. Klash 2018 Auburn University at Montgomery

Metacognitive Awareness And Mindset In Current And Future Principals, Tara L. Beziat, Yvette Bynum, Erin F. Klash

School Leadership Review

Metacognition is a key component in education, yet little is known about whether or not instructional leaders are metacognitively aware. Metacognition is described as thoughts about one's knowledge and control over their own cognitive processes (Flavell, 1979). Kuhn (2000) indicated that metacognition develops from an early age, and asserted that the more explicit metacognitive thinking is, the more effective one would be able to engage in metacognitive thinking and control of their cognitive processes. Some examples of metacognitive strategies include planning, monitoring, and evaluating, and can be used by educators or students (Fathima, Sasikuman, & Roja, 2014). Metacognitive strategies should …

Preparing Educational Leaders For Social Justice: Reimagining One Educational Leadership Program From The Ground Up, Holly M. Manaseri, Christopher B. Manaseri

School Leadership Review

Thirty years after the report that started the latest round of educational reform, A Nation at Risk (National Commission on Education Excellence, 1983), the Wallace Foundation began funding a series of studies examining the preparation of school and district leaders. Bringing together findings from four reports, one each by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), The School Superintendents Association (AASA), the American Institutes for Research (AIR), and the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA), the Wallace Foundation issued five key recommendations for university preparation of school leaders. This call to action was sounded at a time when …

Storm Clouds, Pauline M. Sampson, Scott Bailey, Kerry L. Roberts 2018 Stephen F. Austin State University

Storm Clouds, Pauline M. Sampson, Scott Bailey, Kerry L. Roberts

School Leadership Review

This issue of School Leadership Review comes at a time when many states and territories are dealing with the aftermath of hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Unprecedented rains, catastrophic winds, and historic levels of sustained flooding have devastated many communities, as well as the schools and universities within them. These awful disasters brought the loss of lives as well as total destruction of homes, businesses, and campuses. Perhaps the historic ferocity of these storms is coincidental or, more likely, they were fueled by a warmer than ever ocean, but whatever the cause, the impacts of these storms leave immense structural …

Active Shooter Events: The Guardian Plan, David R. Walker, Pauline M. Sampson 2018 Christoval ISD

Active Shooter Events: The Guardian Plan, David R. Walker, Pauline M. Sampson

School Leadership Review

The decision on how to protect the children and youth while at schools is a serious conversation with varying agreements on the best practices. Some feel that school personnel should not be trained nor expected to be able to react to an armed person while others believe that training of school personnel and allowing them to be armed will deter armed assailants in schools. Ultimately, each school board and district leadership need to choose an emergency safety plan that fits their community. The number of school shootings has brought emergency safety discussions to the forefront again. One school district, highlighted …

A Comparison Of Principal Self-Efficacy And Assessment Ratings By Certified Staff: Using Multi-Rater Feedback As Part Of A Statewide Principal Evaluation System, Summer Pannell, Lisa White, Juliann Sergi Mcbrayer

School Leadership Review

A vast body of research supports the notion that school leadership is the second most influential factor on student achievement, behind only the classroom teacher (Davis & Darling-Hammond, 2012; Lynch, 2012; Mendels & Mitgang, 2013; Miller, 2013; Pannell, Peltier-Glaze, Haynes, Davis, & Skelton, 2015). Lawmakers have begun to recognize the significance of the principal’s impact on student achievement, and while waiting on reauthorization of federal education legislation, the United States Department of Education (USDE) included a principal evaluation component in the requirements for states to waive certain provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001. To request …

The Relationship Between School Climate And Teacher Self-Efficacy In A Rural Virginia School System, Paige Lacks, Scott B. Watson

School Leadership Review

School climate is one of the most significant factors in solidifying an effective learning environment. In today’s complex educational system, leaders face daily challenges in the world of high stakes testing and state accreditation that force them to ensure that they have implemented reforms that will provide sustained improvement in student achievement. As a result, school leaders and teachers must possess the ability to change and adapt to their conditions for continuous organizational improvement despite possible resistance from stakeholders. Moreover, with diverse teacher experience levels, leaders consistently assess and evaluate the instructional practices in their building to empower teachers to …

Shared Leadership On A Career And Technical Education Campus, Samantha Ward, Casey Graham-Brown 2018 Grand Prairie ISD

Shared Leadership On A Career And Technical Education Campus, Samantha Ward, Casey Graham-Brown

School Leadership Review

Many students enter career and technical education (CTE) programs to pursue the attainment of job-specific skills. K-12 career and technical education program educators help prepare students for careers after high school by offering students a way to establish and improve upon industry-based skills (Treschan & Mehrotra, 2014). Through CTE programs, educators train students to become global competitors in the workforce by introducing them to career practices that are prominent within their fields (Conley, 2013; Gordon, 2014; Stone & Lewis, 2012).

The Role Of School Leaders In Creating A Learning Ecosystem Through School-Community Partnerships, Lisa Dimartino

Educational Studies Dissertations

This multi-method study examined survey and interview data collected from current K-12 school leaders in Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Southeastern Massachusetts to determine the role school leaders play in creating a learning ecosystem through school-community partnerships. This study included three research questions that inquired about the degree to which principals believe school-community partnerships improve schools, the ways partnerships are currently developed, and the identification of factors and conditions that promote or inhibit partnerships. Data was collected in three phases, including survey responses from 25 school leaders, followed by interviews with five respondents, with the final phase consisting of document …

Student Perceptions Of Enhancing The Internship Experience For Online Principal Preparation Programs, Bob Nicks, Tilisa Thibodeaux, Gary Martin 2018 Lamar University

Student Perceptions Of Enhancing The Internship Experience For Online Principal Preparation Programs, Bob Nicks, Tilisa Thibodeaux, Gary Martin

School Leadership Review

Principal preparation programs understand the need for relevant internship activities that bridge the gap between theory and practice (Anast-May, Buckner, & Geer, 2011; Darling-Hammond, LaPointe, Meyerson, Orr, & Cohen (2007). Principal preparation programs utilizing distance technology are also charged with meeting this expectation and the electronic learning technologies have changed learning from restrictive to flexible, accessible, and innovative (Tseng & Gardner, 2016). The internship is a widely accepted program component of principal preparation that provides the student with actual administrative experience during the certification process; however, despite the mandates from national accreditation organizations and state certification agencies, the literature is …
