There is a gap in the financial literacy of first-generation college students. Research on first-generation college students and their unique barriers to financial resources, financial literacy, financial aid, and first-year seminars is reviewed. Research indicates that higher education funding, first-generation students’ intersecting identities, and the unique barriers related to their identities impact first-generation college students’ ability to succeed in higher education. A first-year seminar is proposed with financial literacy topics threaded throughout the entirety of the course and a financial literacy unit to address the gap in financial literacy. Curiosity, intrinsic motivation, and autonomy-supportive teaching all promote lifelong learning in both the classroom and Marine Corps. Humans are all born with curiosity. Children inherently practice forms of intrinsic motivation. Most would agree that they do not like being micromanaged - they enjoy a sense of freedom when completing tasks. Despite this, many students learn in a controlling environment and many Marines work under controlling leaders. With the adoption of such initiatives as No Child Left Behind (NCLB), Common Core State Standards (CCSS), and the College and Career Readiness Performance Index (CCRPI), there is increasing pressure for students to meet and exceed performance expectations. This is easier said than done, especially given that not all organizational structures are helpful to student performance. A quantitative, correlational study was done to determine the relationship between school organization and school performance within Georgia schools. Subgroup comparisons between high and low performing schools were included in analyses. Results showed that high organizational effectiveness was associated with high student performance outcomes. …

This article describes how East Carolina University’s Doctor of Education (EdD) program has undergone a dramatic redesign over the past decade to better prepare PK-12 administrators for the challenges of 21st century school district leadership, with an emphasis on superintendency. The qualitative bounded case study examined the HOPE Scholarship including the policy changes it went through since its inception and the impact HOPE has made on postsecondary education in Georgia. HOPE is the largest merit-based scholarship in the United States and is facing issues with funding for future scholars. This dissertation addressed its inception by Governor Zell Miller, the changes that it went through as issues arose, and the impact it has made on postsecondary education since 1993.
