Identifying School-Wide Inequities: Action Research Conducted Using An Equity Audit To Inform Annual School Planning For A Pre-K–8 School, Janine Casella
Theses and Dissertations
This action research study aims to identify and address equity gaps within a PK-8 New Jersey school by leading a professional learning community (PLC). The study will use action research methods to conduct an educational equity audit, which will inform the annual school plan and create a leadership action plan to stimulate organizational change. Traditionally, teachers at the research site have used Data-Driven Decision Making (DDDM) cycles, but this study will integrate Critical Data-Driven Decision Making (CDDDM) cycles, including an equity audit analyzed in PLCs. The audit will identify patterns of inequity and identify strategies to address them. The study …

School Administrators Making Sense Of Wellness Issues And Technology Policy: A Qualitative Instrumental Case Study, Allyson Michelle Rose
Theses and Dissertations
Technology use has been identified as a key contributor to the decrease in youth mental health (Children’s Bureau, 2019; Lebrun-Harris et al., 2022; Dwyer, 2022; Mojtabai et al., 2016; Yasakci, 2019; Odgers & Jensen, 2020). The purpose of this qualitative instrumental case study was to investigate how school district administrators are addressing wellness issues that are developing in elementary aged students due to technology use. The intent of this study was to use the theory of sensemaking (Weick, 1995) to investigate how administrators create policies that respond to the current wellness crisis arising from technology usage in public elementary school …

Differences In Algebra I End-Of-Course Exam Performance Of African-American Girls As A Function Of Their Economic Status: A Texas, Multiyear Analysis, Latonia Amerson, Cynthia Martinez-Garcia, John R. Slate
School Leadership Review
The extent to which differences were present for African American girls as a function of their economic status in their performance on the Texas state-mandated Algebra I End-of-Course exam was examined. Specifically addressed was the extent to which African American girls differed in their performance on three Grade Level performance standards: Approaches Grade Level, Meets Grade Level, and Masters Grade Level. Inferential statistical analyses of Texas statewide data revealed that statistically significantly lower percentages of African American girls who were economically disadvantaged met the three Grade Level standards than African American girls who were not in poverty. Implications and recommendations …

Developing Peace Leadership: Lessons From The Peace Practice Alliance, Whitney Mcintyre Miller, Lisa Hilt, Rabab Atwi, Nick Irwin
Education Faculty Articles and Research
In 2020, Euphrates Institute piloted the Peace Practice Alliance (PPA), a virtual six-month program that brings together an international cohort of peacebuilders to learn peace leadership theories and develop related skills and practices. The program framework is based on integral peace leadership, which focuses on four interrelated areas of Innerwork, Knowledge, Community, and Environment. As part of an emergent field, limited research has documented the application of integral peace leadership in peacebuilder training and development programs. This paper, therefore, examines the pilot PPA program to understand the ways in which an online, global peace leadership training program can support the …

Supporting Principals As Instructional Leaders: Exploring A Supervisory Model That Empowers And Removes Barriers, Dale Uselman
Doctorate in Education
In recent years, an increasing amount of pressure has been placed on K-12 school principals to engage as instructional leaders to increase student achievement. Historically, however, principals were expected to operate as school managers instead of instructional leaders, and therefore, often felt unprepared as instructional leaders. Many principals also faced barriers, such as time constraints, that impeded their ability to be effective instructional leaders. To remedy this problem of practice, school districts repurposed the principal supervisor role to provide both supervision and coaching for principals. Existing research on this principal supervisor-coach model identified practices that supervisor-coaches used to support principals …

Critical Conversations: Supporting Elementary Teachers In Instructing With Inclusive Children’S Literature, Susan Flis
Educational Studies Dissertations
ABSTRACT
The present study investigated how an instructional coach supported elementary classroom teachers in critically analyzing interactive read-aloud texts and facilitating critical conversations with students about inclusive picture books. Extant literature highlights the importance of the representation of all identities in children’s literature. This qualitative collaborative inquiry research study was framed by critical literacy theory. Six classroom teachers in grades kindergarten through 5th grade participated in this research. Children’s books are a valuable instructional tool for a variety of reasons, but educators must think critically when choosing books for their classrooms. Many teachers are unaware of the effect that …

Middle School Teachers’ Perceptions Of Standardized Testing And Preparation With Students’ Different Abilities And Classroom Instructional Strategies: A Case Study, Manoj Karikode Thomas
Student Theses and Dissertations
Students with different abilities perform lower on state standardized tests, such as the STAAR test (Texas Education Agency, n.d.). The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to study the underlying causes that contributed to the low performance of students with different abilities on STAAR standardized tests and strategies the teachers in the State of Texas use to prepare students with different abilities. For this study, students with different abilities include students with special needs, students from economically disadvantaged families, and English language learners through the perception of middle school teachers. The theoretical framework for this multiple case study …

The Practical Implementation Of Virtual Instruction To Support Cognitive Development In Students With Low-Incidence Disabilities Through Social-Emotional Interactions, Ida Smith
Student Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative phenomenological study examines special education teachers’ perspectives to understand how virtual learning environments can support, through social–emotional interactions, the cognitive development of students with low-incident disabilities in a homebound setting. For this study, which was based on Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory (1978), qualitative data were collected through 15 semi-structured interviews with special education teachers with experience providing virtual instruction to students with low-incidence disabilities. The study’s findings showed that special education teachers perceive virtual instruction as benefiting low-incidence disability students in a homebound setting. The data also revealed that specific accommodations and modifications, which the special education teachers believed …

The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to explore how educators describe the impact of SEL instruction provided by the guidance counselor. Additionally, this study also sought to explore how educators perceive the supporting role they play in the delivery of SEL instruction alongside the guidance counselor. The overarching two research questions were: How do educators describe the impact of SEL instruction when students receive social-emotional learning instruction from the guidance counselor on a regular basis? How do educators describe the supportive role they play in the delivery of SEL instruction provided by the guidance counselor? The theoretical frameworks …

Building Productive Relationships With Differing Personalities Among Middle School Plc Group Members, Jennifer L. Spiegel
Student Theses and Dissertations
Collaboration and collegiality in forced workplace groups is an expectation at the middle level of K-12 education. Teachers at this level are still questioning why certain groups work well together and others do not. The purpose of this ethnographic study was to examine the personal work attitudes of highly functioning middle school professional learning communities to discover collegiality preferences of coworkers and the areas of professional and personal development they found valuable to their success. Data was collected through a multiple-phase approach from a large suburban Midwest school district. An ethnographic study was completed that included a participant self-administered Big …

Community College Advisors’ Perceived Levels Of Self-Efficacy Providing Career Counseling To Students In Alabama, James Eric Sewell
Student Theses and Dissertations
The problem to be addressed in this quantitative study was the education system’s failure to produce individuals with the necessary skills to fulfill high-wage, high-demand technical positions in the market. The study examined whether career counseling self-efficacy levels varied across different experiences, such as educational background, years working as a community college advisor, years working as a teacher, recent training in career counseling, and perceived knowledge of career and technical education. More specifically, the study examined the self-efficacy of career counselors in providing career counseling in 10 Alabama community colleges. The self-efficacy levels of these career counselors were then evaluated …
