Emerging Technology Tools For Qualitative Data Collection, Julie Kimbler, Manon Maitland Schladen, Diana Moore, Bruce Sowers, Martha Snyder

The Qualitative Report Conference

Emerging technology tools enable qualitative researchers to collect text, audio, and visual data any time and any place. However, given many of these tools are cloud-based, they also present questions regarding security and confidential data collection. The uses, advantages, and drawbacks of emerging technology tools used for note-taking, collecting, managing, and sharing various forms of data will be presented within the context of qualitative data collection in instructional technology.

Ethnography Supports Changes To Student-Centered Instruction, Mary Ann Sprague, Maryann Fuhrmann

The Qualitative Report Conference

Researchers developing automated education aids requested a work practice study of traditional and enhanced ways to track student achievement. The pilot included several elementary schools, where pre- and post-pilot processes were analyzed. Despite privacy challenges, audio recordings, interactions during user interviews, co-design sessions, and discussions of graphical representations provided rich data.

Stories Of Aboriginal Transracial Adoption, Simon Nuttgens 2013 Athabasca University

Stories Of Aboriginal Transracial Adoption, Simon Nuttgens

The Qualitative Report

Despite the significant number of transracial Aboriginal adoptions that have taken place in Canada, little research is available that addresses the psychological and psychosocial ramifications for the children involved. The scant literature that does exist raises concerns about the psychological impact of this type of adoption. The present research used narrative inquiry to bring greater understanding to the experiences of Aboriginal children raised in non Aboriginal families. The life stories of four Aboriginal adults who were adopted as children were gathered through audio - taped interviews. Seven “narrative threads” salient across the four participants’ life stories include: disconnection, passing, diversion, …

Qualitative Research Ladder For Fledging Researchers A Review Of Essentials Of Qualitative Inquiry, Sepideh Mirzaei Fard

The Qualitative Report

In order to qualify our research, I think quantitative studies are not enough. A s a matter of fact, we need more qualitative studies especially if we are dealing with human traits and the social sciences’ studies as the numbers would not suffice. In doing so, there is a need for resear4chers to acquire a full understanding of qualitative research methodology, data collection procedures and the risks and issues related to them. For the beginners to enter in to the ocean of qualitative research areas, it seems necessary to have good sourcebooks to get a general view of this type …

Dying In Good Company, Rodger E. Broome PhD 2013 Utah Valley University

Dying In Good Company, Rodger E. Broome Phd

Rodger E. Broome

The lived experience of having someone die in your presence can have a personal impact. I had the occasion to listen to the account of a paramedic's experience with having a patient literally die in his arms. I was able to offer an existential perspective to him, drawing on the works of Rollo May's the Meaning of Anxiety and Ernest Becker's The Denial of Death when responding to his personal story. I relate the story to you.

Quantum Of Solitude: Lonelines As Experienced By Pastors' Wives, Jama Davis, Fred Milacci

Fred Milacci

This phenomenological study investigated the individual experiences of eight pastors’ wives with the phenomenon, loneliness. Data was collected using informal, conversational, taped and transcribed interviews. Descriptions of the experiences of loneliness and the general factors contributing to loneliness were identified by the participants. The experiences and general contributing factors were compared and contrasted. The findings of this study suggest three factors which most significantly impact pastors’ wives and loneliness. Suggestions for future research involving pastors’ wives and pastors are provided.

The Constant Comparative Analysis Method Outside Of Grounded Theory, Sheila M. Fram 2013 Independent Researcher and Consultant

The Constant Comparative Analysis Method Outside Of Grounded Theory, Sheila M. Fram

The Qualitative Report

This commentary addresses the gap in the literature regarding discussion of the legitimate use of Constant Comparative Analysis Method (CCA) outside of Grounded Theory. The purpose is to show the strength of using CCA to maintain the emic perspective and how theoretical frameworks can maintain the etic perspective throughout the analysis. My naturalistic inquiry model shows how conceptual frameworks and theoretical frameworks can be integrated when using the CCA method.

A Novel Method Of Enhancing Grounded Theory Memos With Voice Recording, Rachel Stocker, Helen Close 2013 Durham University

A Novel Method Of Enhancing Grounded Theory Memos With Voice Recording, Rachel Stocker, Helen Close

The Qualitative Report

In this article the authors present the recent discovery of a novel method of supplementing written grounded theory memos with voice recording, the combination of which may provide significant analytical advantages over solely the traditional written method. Memo writing is an essential component of a grounded theory study, however it is often difficult to capture thoughts, feelings, and emerging theorising using written methods after a research interview. I found that many of these potentially valuable ide as were lost or misunderstood upon reading my subsequent written memo, and the feelings and context which influenced the emerging theory were not always …

The Effects Of Public Self-Consciousness And Embarrassability On College Student Drinking: Evidence In Support Of A Protective Self-Presentational Model, Lizabeth A. Crawford, Katherine B. Novak 2013 Butler University

The Effects Of Public Self-Consciousness And Embarrassability On College Student Drinking: Evidence In Support Of A Protective Self-Presentational Model, Lizabeth A. Crawford, Katherine B. Novak

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In this article we examine the effects of public self-consciousness (PSC) and a cross-situational reactivity to embarrassing encounters (EMB) on college students’ levels of alcohol consumption by levels of perceived peer drinking. The analysis of self-report data from two undergraduate samples (n = 118 and n = 195) yielded virtually identical results and suggests that PSC and EMB affect alcohol use primarily among students with friends who drink heavily. Among these individuals, our findings are consistent with a protective self-presentational model. While PSC increased levels of alcohol consumption among students who believed drinking to be prevalent within their social …

Visual Research And Communication Techniques: A ‘Tasting Menu’ For Development Practitioners, Lauren Leigh Hinthorne 2013 University of Queensland

Visual Research And Communication Techniques: A ‘Tasting Menu’ For Development Practitioners, Lauren Leigh Hinthorne

Lauren Leigh Hinthorne

Despite general agreement that development projects should be ‘participatory’ and ‘evidence based’, achieving meaningful stakeholder engagement remains problematic. Meanwhile, substantial evidence indicates that visual research and communication techniques are both well suited to community engagement and have the capacity to elicit different, more nuanced information than traditional survey, focus group and interview tools. This article reviews an array of visual techniques practiced across a range of fields, highlighting their relevance and potential applications to development work. Rather than offering detailed methodological instruction, this article aims to stimulate interest in visual techniques while demonstrating both their potential and rigor.

Union Responses To Young Workers Since The Great Recession In Ireland, The Netherlands And Sweden: Are Youth Structures Re-Orienting The Union Agenda?, Kurt Vandaele

Kurt Vandaele

This article analyses how youth structures at the confederal level of trade unions are influencing the union agenda in the face of the growing problem of youth unemployment in Europe. Five youth structures from union confederations in Ireland, the Netherlands and Sweden have been studied. Although youth structures were already able to influence the union agenda in certain confederations before the crisis, the evidence demonstrates that youth issues have gained prominence today. A particular pattern discernible across countries is coalition-building between youth structures and student organizations for guiding the transition of the next generation of young workers from school to …

Workers’ Rights, Worker Mobilisation And Workers’ Voice, Stefan Clauwaert, Aline Hoffmann, Romuald Jagodzinski, Isabelle Schömann, Michael Stollt, Kurt Vandaele

Kurt Vandaele

In his address to the European Parliament on 14 September 2011, ILO Director-General Juan Somovia declared that ‘respect for fundamental principles and rights at work is non-negotiable: not even in times of crisis when questions of fairness abound. This is particularly important in countries having to adopt austerity measures. We cannot use the crisis as an excuse to disregard internationally agreed labour standards.’ This warning is cleary not being heeded. As will be elaborated in the first section of this chapter, the labour reforms proposed or initiated by the EU and the Troika have indeed had detrimental effects on workers’ …
