Gains In Reducing Child Poverty, But Racial-Ethnic Disparities Persist, Jessica A. Carson, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Andrew P. Schaefer

The Carsey School of Public Policy at the Scholars' Repository

In this brief, authors Jessica Carson, Marybeth Mattingly, and Andrew Schaefer use data from the American Community Survey to investigate patterns of child poverty across race-ethnicities and across regions and place types. They also explore changes in child poverty rates since 2014 and since the end of the Great Recession in 2009. The authors report that between 2014 and 2015, child poverty fell for all race-ethnicities except Asians. The largest declines in child poverty occurred among blacks and Hispanics, and the poverty gap between them and white and Asian children narrowed, although these groups’ poverty rates are far from converging. …

Personal Constructs In Dementia Caregiving: The Family Caregiving Experience Of People Living With Dementia In Saudi Arabia, Eradah O. Hamad

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

As observed globally, family (informal and in-home) caregiving of older adults with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia has become a critical issue in the Arab region, including Saudi Arabia. This doctoral research psychometrically and conceptually evaluates an Arabic version of the Montgomery Borgatta Caregiver Burden Scale for use as a measurement tool to assess family caregivers of older adults living at home with dementia in Saudi Arabia. Currently, there is no published literature that addresses family caregiving for individuals with dementia in Saudi Arabia. Through further examination of family caregiving narratives, this research maps the personal and social …

History Of Sioux Lookout Black Hawks Hockey Team, 1949-1951, Fatima Ba'abbad

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Existing literature on residential schools in Canada indicates that sports played an important role within that system and were a positive experience for Aboriginal students. However, these sporting experiences have not been analyzed from the students’ perspectives. This thesis aims to enrich our understanding of the role of sports within residential schools; the meanings former students attached to their experiences, and what sports mean to reconciliation initiatives using 1) narrative analysis of media representations of the Black Hawks team from Pelican Lake Indian Residential School during their 1951 hockey tour to Ottawa and Toronto, 2) a two-part interview process (photo …

Radical Colleagues: A Case Study Of Art And Social Justice Using A Participatory Approach, Sarah Herring, Katlyn Bark 2017 Georgia College & State University

Radical Colleagues: A Case Study Of Art And Social Justice Using A Participatory Approach, Sarah Herring, Katlyn Bark

Georgia College Student Research Events

Student voice in higher education has the potential to transform teaching methods and curriculum development (Seale, 2009). Student voice work involves faculty and student collaboration in the evaluation of a course, implementing student perspectives, which are often overlooked. Considered “radical colleagues” (Fielding, 2004), sociology students worked in collaboration with professors Valerie Aranda and Sandra Godwin to address some of the challenges of interdisciplinary community-based learning. Qualitative data was collected through open-ended interviews with a purposive sample of students who participated in the Art and Social Justice course at Georgia College. In 2014, one sociology student interviewed 8 students, and two …

How Do Money, Sex, And Stress Influence Marital Instability?, E. Jeffrey Hill, David B. Allsop, Ashley B. LeBaron, Roy A. Bean 2017 Brigham Young University

How Do Money, Sex, And Stress Influence Marital Instability?, E. Jeffrey Hill, David B. Allsop, Ashley B. Lebaron, Roy A. Bean

Journal of Financial Therapy

This study explored how money and sex simultaneously predicted marital instability, and what financial therapists might focus on with clients to address problems in these areas. Specifically, this paper concurrently examined the relationship of marital instability to financial and family stressors (financial stressors, work-family conflict, and parenting stressors); financial and sexual resources (couple income and couple sexual frequency); and financial and sexual perceptions (financial dissatisfaction and sexual dissatisfaction). Couple financial communication and couple relational communication were explored as intervention points for financial therapists. Data came from Wave 2 of the Flourishing Families data set (N = 301). Data were organized …

Leaky Pipeline And Sacrificial Lambs: Gender, Political Parties, And Descriptive And Substantive Representation Of Women In South Korea, 1988 – 2016, Young-Im Lee

Dissertations

This study examines women’s political representation in pre-election (candidate nomination), election, and post-election (legislative activities) stages in South Korea. First, I examined factors contributing to electing women to the National Assembly in the eight national legislative elections since democratization in 1987. I conducted statistical analysis to examine how a candidate’s political experience, major party nomination, incumbency, and districts’ party loyalty affect the candidate’s electoral victory and how each influences women and men differently. I also interviewed candidates, candidate aspirants, elected legislators, legislative staffers, scholars and activists on their personal experiences with major party nomination and election campaigns.

Second, I analyzed …

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this article is to elucidate the differential recovery of household livelihood after the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) in the communities of West End and Punta Gorda on the island of Roatán, Islas de La Bahia (Bay Islands), Honduras; the emphasis is on livelihoods in tourism due to its economic importance on the island. The theoretical approach is a political ecology of tourism with an emphasis on differential benefits and challenges of tourism development at the household level. The study employs a mixed methods ethnographic approach incorporating participant observation, informal interviews, and semi-structured interviews for the qualitative component. …

A Narrative Inquiry: A Black Male Looking To Teach, Edward E. Bell 2017 Capella University

A Narrative Inquiry: A Black Male Looking To Teach, Edward E. Bell

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this qualitative research study was to understand how a Black male experienced the interview process while seeking a teaching position. The participant and I attempted to answer how race and/or gender played a role in his interviewing experiences. The researcher used a qualitative approach to interview this individual. Data analysis revealed major findings contributing to this Black male’s interviewing experiences: Racism played into the hiring process in subtle ways, and just because this candidate was prepared to teach, that preparation did not guarantee his employment. The findings from this narrative account might prove helpful in understanding why …

Modeling The Trauma-Antisociality Relationship As Mediated By World Assumptions: Associations With Gender And Drinking Outcomes, Kathryn Fokas 2017 University of New Mexico

Modeling The Trauma-Antisociality Relationship As Mediated By World Assumptions: Associations With Gender And Drinking Outcomes, Kathryn Fokas

Psychology ETDs

Previous research has established links between traumatic experiences and externalizing pathology including substance use and antisocial behavior, but little is known about potential mechanisms linking these phenomena. This study proposed a novel conceptual model linking these phenomena via the cognitive mechanism of negative world assumptions, or beliefs about the inherent dangerousness and unpredictability of life and others. Given previous mixed findings, this study also sought to explore potential interactions between gender and these phenomena. It was hypothesized that, within a sample of adults seeking alcohol treatment, world assumptions would mediate and gender would moderate the trauma-antisociality association. It also was …

What’S In It For Me? The Impact To Social Exchange Dynamics Of Hispanic Males Serving As Mentors In Formal Youth Programs, Annica Meza Dawe 2017 Brandman University

What’S In It For Me? The Impact To Social Exchange Dynamics Of Hispanic Males Serving As Mentors In Formal Youth Programs, Annica Meza Dawe

Dissertations

Purpose: The U.S. Hispanic population is on the rise and will continue to be an important thread in the fabric of American society as a whole. However, in the midst of this burgeoning group lies its male subpopulation which faces its own unique challenges. One outlet that has demonstrated success for minorities is mentoring. Mentoring can provide Hispanic males with numerous benefits in a social exchange paradigm. Unfortunately the majority of mentoring research has focused solely on the perspective of the protégé, thus leaving mentor perceptions, particularly those of Hispanic males, unexplored. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study sought …

Donna M. Hughes

In December 2016, Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies Donna M. Hughes published the inaugural issue of the journal Dignity: A Journal on Sexual Exploitation and Violence as editor-in-chief. Just a few months ago, in January, Dignity released its second issue. Professor Hughes has been working on issues related to sexual violence and exploitation, such as human trafficking since the 1980s. She saw an opening in the field for a journal about the particular work that she has been doing for so long. “There is no other scholarly journal that addresses sexual exploitation and violence and has an editorial position …

Black Women As Scapegoats: The Mass Incarceration Of Black Men And The Social Stigma Of The Welfare Queen, Keiondra J. Grace, Olivia M. McLaughlin 2017 Western Michigan University

Black Women As Scapegoats: The Mass Incarceration Of Black Men And The Social Stigma Of The Welfare Queen, Keiondra J. Grace, Olivia M. Mclaughlin

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

In popular and academic discourse, African American women are regarded as the source of all social ills within the inner-city. This has become increasingly true in the era of mass incarceration, resultant of the War on Drugs. While Black men are portrayed as violent criminals, Black women are portrayed as the drug addicted, welfare queens they left behind. This trend can be explained, in part, by the actions of politicians and researchers who appear to remain ignorant to the importance of recognizing social structures such as gender, race, and class. We argue that Black single mothers, some of the most …

Driverless Cars And Disability: Alternative Worlds In Media Presentation, Art Blaser 2017 Chapman University

Driverless Cars And Disability: Alternative Worlds In Media Presentation, Art Blaser

Political Science Faculty Articles and Research

How liberating? For whom? At what costs (economic and social)? This paper is an exploratory examination of images that people have expressed about driverless cars, particularly as seen through particular media outlets. I am also concerned with the question of where disabled people fit. As I argue, many answers are narrow and superficial. Neither policy-makers nor media outlets should reduce disabled people to consumers of a product, while paying insufficient attention to related environmental and social issues. Although it would be easy to identify problematic media images of disabled people, there are also examples of nuanced, detailed analysis.

The author …

The Cyclical Relationship Between Generational Poverty And Poor Education: Breaking The Barrier In Haiti, Jesse A. Childress, Ashley Hand, Lauren Pullins, Emily Rutherford, Michelle Tye 2017 Cedarville University

The Cyclical Relationship Between Generational Poverty And Poor Education: Breaking The Barrier In Haiti, Jesse A. Childress, Ashley Hand, Lauren Pullins, Emily Rutherford, Michelle Tye

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

Research demonstrates that generational poverty and poor education are cyclical in nature. In Haiti, poverty diminishes the quality of education due to the fact it hampers access to education, lacks parental involvement, and has inadequate health care. Conversely, poor education traps Haitians in the cycle of generational poverty by inhibiting them from developing life skills and adequate literacy; in turn, this disables them from participating in higher paying jobs. Based on the repetitive correspondence between the two, our goals are: to educate individuals on the cyclical relationship between poor education and generational poverty, expose and examine the barriers to receiving …
