Using Nvivo™ For Literature Reviews: The Eight Step Pedagogy (N7+1), Maureen M. O'Neill Dr, Sarah R. Booth Mrs, Janeen Therese Lamb Phd

The Qualitative Report

While a literature review is a necessary milestone to be completed by all researchers in a timely and efficient manner, it is often one of the most difficult aspects of the research journey. Moreover, traditional approaches often leave novice researchers, to struggle with the conceptualisation of their literature review, now complicated by the overwhelming quantity of research available online. This paper presents a rationale the use of Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS) programs for literature reviews. QDAS tools allow the researcher to explore large amounts of textual documents to see patterns. These programs are often overlooked by novice researchers due …

Audiovisual Media Annotation Using Qualitative Data Analysis Software: A Comparative Analysis, Liliana Melgar Estrada, Marijn Koolen

The Qualitative Report

The variety of specialized tools designed to facilitate analysis of audio-visual (AV) media are useful not only to media scholars and oral historians but to other researchers as well. Both Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS) packages and dedicated systems created for specific disciplines, such as linguistics, can be used for this purpose. Software proliferation challenges researchers to make informed choices about which package will be most useful for their project. This paper aims to present an information science perspective of the scholarly use of tools in qualitative research of audio-visual sources. It provides a baseline of affordances based on functionalities …

When Protest Doesn't Quite Fit The Mold, Morgan M. Hubbard 2018 Gettysburg College

When Protest Doesn't Quite Fit The Mold, Morgan M. Hubbard

SURGE

White people protesting is powerful. It is a privilege to be guaranteed that someone will listen to us, as pointed out by Jerome Clarke in a piece about last year’sWon’t Stand For Hate” protest. With that privilege comes a responsibility that has been neglected on this campus.

I agree with the students who protested on the steps of Penn Hall and spoke out during the Student Senate meeting about the way our administration is handling the mold situation in Hanson Hall. The response was insufficient and it directly contradicts the College’s verbal commitment to promoting a healthy living …

Pope Francis Won't Support Women In The Priesthood, But Here's What He Could Do, Lisa Mcclain

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

On March 13, Pope Francis will complete his first five years as head of the Roman Catholic Church. Since his election, Pope Francis has engaged the estimated 1.2 billion Catholics and innumerable non-Catholics worldwide with his frank, inclusive talk on issues as diverse as poverty and homosexuality. In fact, many observers seem confused by the church’s apparent willingness to reconsider traditions regarding some contentious issues, such as divorce.

For Those About To Rock: Gender Codes In The Rock Music Video Games Rock Band And Rocksmith, Elisa M. Melendez 2018 Florida International University

For Those About To Rock: Gender Codes In The Rock Music Video Games Rock Band And Rocksmith, Elisa M. Melendez

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores gender codes within the intersection of two American pop culture staples, video games and rock music, by conducting a feminist analysis of two video games (Rock Band and Rocksmith). Both video games and rock music have had their share of feminist academic critique: Musicologists point out how lack of canonical inclusion, gendered attitudes towards instruments, and messages from supporting media create an unwelcome environment for women to pursue a rock music career. Game studies scholars have examined similar attitudes, including a lack of women represented in both the video games and the studios that create them.

Hub City Farmers’ Market Revitalization Of The Spartanburg Northside Community, Caitlynn Myer

Wofford Bonner Scholar Senior Capstone Projects

The Northside Community in the early 20th century was a thriving prominent community in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Not only was Spartan Mill – the largest mill in the county, located in the Northside, but also the community became the central destination of the railroad line – thus, coining the epithet “hub city.” How did such a thriving community succumb to destruction? What is the history behind the Northside Community historically remaining a food desert for over 40 years? What changes of investment into the Northside Community have aimed to not only revitalize the community, but also to bring access to …

Bonner: My Stepping Stone, Juliana Mejia Rima

Wofford Bonner Scholar Senior Capstone Projects

Bonner has allowed me to grow as a member of the Spartanburg community, and as a person. By strengthening my skills as a community leader, a compassionate person, and a seeker of bettering the lives of others through the Bonner Scholars program, I was able to feel confident enough to pursue another program that works with the lower income older adult community of Spartanburg. The Intergenerational Connections program joins college students and older adults together to learn about and communicate with each other creatively. Because of Bonner, I knew that being a part of another program with similar initiatives to …

Epistemological Ruptures: Flashback On Fieldwork Dilemmas While Doing Research On Friends At Home, Israel Aguilar 2018 Texas A & M University - Corpus Christi

Epistemological Ruptures: Flashback On Fieldwork Dilemmas While Doing Research On Friends At Home, Israel Aguilar

The Qualitative Report

While doing fieldwork at home and/or with people who are familiar can yield new knowledge, researchers using ethnographic techniques ought to first assume the role of apprentice and enact vulnerability before they can represent findings that represent what really happened. Doing otherwise can tarnish relationships or jeopardize a study. The history of narrative within ethnographic research is discussed as an introduction to the author’s own personal narrative, which is in the form of a flashback that illustrates the journey he embarked on in 2010 when he initiated dissertation research in his hometown of south Texas. It is here where he …

A System For Coding The Interaction In Focus Groups And Dyadic Interviews, David L. Morgan, Kim Hoffman 2018 Portland State University

A System For Coding The Interaction In Focus Groups And Dyadic Interviews, David L. Morgan, Kim Hoffman

The Qualitative Report

Interaction among participants is the fundamental mechanism that generates data in focus groups. Despite calls for ways to analyze interaction in focus groups, there is still an unmet need to develop such tools. We present a coding system to investigate interaction by emphasizing how participants use the substantive aspects of the topics they discuss. We then apply it to the question of how conversations in dyadic interviews (with two participants) compare to discussions in focus groups (with four or more participants). We find that dyadic interviews are more likely to contain explicit connections to the content of the previous speaker’s …
