A Competent Mwcnt-Grafted Mnox/Pt Nanoanode For The Direct Formic Acid Fuel Cells, Islam M. Al-Akraa, Mamdouh M. Moutaz, Ahmad M. Mohammad, Yaser M. Asal

Chemical Engineering

A novel “MnOx/Pt/MWCNT-GC” nanocatalyst is recommended for the electrooxidation of formic acid (EOFA), the principal anodic reaction in the direct formic acid fuel cells (DFAFCs). The sequential (layer-by-layer) protocol was employed to prepare the catalyst through the electrodeposition of Pt (nano-Pt) and manganese oxide (nano-MnOx) nanoparticles onto the surface of a glassy carbon (GC) electrode supported with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The nano-MnOx could successfully mediate the mechanism of EOFA by accelerating the charge transfer, “electronic effect”. On the other hand, MWCNTs could enhance the catalytic performance by changing the surface geometry that inhibited the adsorption of poisoning CO, which …

Exploring Magneto-Excitons In Bulk And Mono-Layer Semiconductors Using Non-Linear Spectroscopy Techniques, Varun Mapara

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The research in two-dimensional (2D) materials has evolved from ``traditional" quantum wells based on group III-V and II-VI semiconductors to atomically thin sheets of van der Waals materials such as 2D semiconducting Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs). These 2D materials remain a stimulating field that continues to introduce new challenges. From both a fundamental physics and technological perspective, magneto-optical spectroscopy has been an essential tool in this research field. TMDs, for example, pose the challenge of characterizing their spin-valley-resolved physics and deriving implications in quantum computation and information research. With the discovery of valley Zeeman effects, the spin-valley physics of TMDs …

Computational Rational Design Of Electrocatalysts For Electrochemical Ammonia And Hydrogen Synthesis, Akash Jain Mar 2022

Computational Rational Design Of Electrocatalysts For Electrochemical Ammonia And Hydrogen Synthesis, Akash Jain

Doctoral Dissertations

The electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) offer fossil-fuel-free routes for hydrogen and ammonia synthesis, respectively. However, currently, both processes lack suitable electrocatalysts for practical applications. Thus, this dissertation focuses on the computational rational design of HER and NRR electrocatalysts. HER is most efficiently catalyzed by platinum (Pt), which is expensive. To reduce the catalyst cost, we investigate core-shell nanoparticles of inexpensive tungsten-carbide (WC) and Pt (WC@Pt). Using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we compare the suitability of two WC phases, α-WC and β-WC as support materials for Pt overlayers. We dope WC with titanium …

Closed-Loop Control Of Meltpool Temperature In Directed Energy Deposition, Ziyad M. Smoqi, Ben Bevans, Aniruddha Gaikwad, James Craig, Alan Abul-Haj, Brent Roeder, Bill Macy, Jeffrey E. Shield, Prahalada K. Rao

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The objective of this work is to mitigate flaw formation in powder and laser-based directed energy deposition (DED) additive manufacturing process through close-loop control of the meltpool temperature. In this work, the meltpool temperature was controlled by modulating the laser power based on feedback signals from a coaxial two-wavelength imaging pyrometer. The utility of closed-loop control in DED is demonstrated in the context of practically inspired trapezoid-shaped stainlesssteel parts (SS 316L). We demonstrate that parts built under closed-loop control have reduced variation in porosity and uniform microstructure compared to parts built under open-loop conditions. For example, post-process characterization showed that …

Selective Co2 Reduction To Formate On Heterostructured Sn/Sno2 Nanoparticles Promoted By Carbon Layer Networks, Xue Teng, Yanli Niu, Shuaiqi Gong, Xuan Liu, Zuofeng Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

Tin (Sn)-based materials have emerged as promising electrocatalysts for selective reduction of CO2 to formate, but their overall performances are still limited by electrode structures which govern the accessibility to active sites, the electron transfer kinetics, and the catalytic stability. In this study, the heterostructured Sn/SnO2 nanoparticles dispersed by N-doped carbon layer networks (Sn/SnO2@NC) were synthesized by a melt-recrystallization method taking the low melting point of Sn (m.p. 232oC). The N-doped carbon layer networks derived from polydopamine could attract more electrons on the electrocatalyst, serve as conductive agents and protect the ultrafine nanoparticles from agglomeration and …

Synergistic Enhancement Of Formic Acid Electro-Oxidation On Ptxcuy Co-Electrodeposited Binary Catalysts, Yaser M. Asal, Ahmad M. Mohammad, Sayed S. Abd El Rehim, Islam M. Al-Akraa

Chemical Engineering

A propitious binary catalyst composed of Pt and Cu which were electrodeposited simultaneously onto a glassy carbon (GC) substrate was recommended for the formic acid (FA) electro-oxidation reaction (FAOR); the principal anodic reaction in the direct FA fuel cells (DFAFCs). The simultaneous co-electrodeposition of Pt and Cu in the catalyst provided an opportunity to tune the geometric functionality of the catalyst to resist the adsorption of poisoning CO at the Pt surface that represented the major impediment for DFAFCs marketing. The catalytic activity of the catalyst toward FAOR was significantly influenced by the (Pt4+/Cu2+) molar ratio of the electrolyte during …

Random Lasing In Nano-Crystalline Zinc-Oxide Films, Benito Reynaldo Resendiz Jan 2022

Random Lasing In Nano-Crystalline Zinc-Oxide Films, Benito Reynaldo Resendiz

Dissertations and Theses

In this thesis, we explore the preparation of random lasers (RLs) using solution-deposited, randomly packed nano-particle films of zinc oxide (ZnO) impregnated with silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanospheres. RLs have their scatterers randomly oriented, while their lasing comes from light propagating along closed paths through the scattering environment. It is shown here that random lasing is readily observed in films made of submicron sized ZnO particles. Adding transparent SiO2 nanospheres to the films, we show there is an effective improvement of the lasing that is observable in all of the samples spectra. Specifically, we found that the lasing …

Controlling The Emission Of Volatile Platinum Oxides To The Vapor Phase In Diesel Oxidation Catalysts, Arnab Ghosh Jan 2022

Controlling The Emission Of Volatile Platinum Oxides To The Vapor Phase In Diesel Oxidation Catalysts, Arnab Ghosh

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Pt-based catalysts are used for the treatment of emissions from vehicles, particularly in Diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs). Three-way catalysts are treated at temperatures ranging from 950℃-1050℃ while DOCs are aged at 800℃ for 50 hrs. At 800°C, Pt reacts with O2 to form PtO2 which has a high vapor pressure and can be transported through the vapor phase. These accelerated aging conditions lead to the formation of large Pt particles causing a loss of catalytic activity. In this thesis, we used model thin-film catalysts that made it possible to quantify the emission of Pt to the vapor phase …

An Archimedes' Screw For Light, Emanuele Galiffi, Paloma A. Huidobro, J. B. Pendry

Advanced Science Research Center

An Archimedes’ Screw captures water, feeding energy into it by lifting it to a higher level. We introduce the first instance of an optical Archimedes’ Screw, and demonstrate how this system is capable of capturing light, dragging it and amplifying it. We unveil new exact analytic solutions to Maxwell’s Equations for a wide family of chiral space-time media, and show their potential to achieve chirally selective amplification within widely tunable parity-time-broken phases. Our work, which may be readily implemented via pump-probe experiments with circularly polarized beams, opens a new direction in the physics of time-varying media by merging the rising …

Phase-Changing Nanodroplets As Nanotheranostic Platform For Combination Cancer Therapy, Catalina-Paula Spatarelu

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Cancer is a cluster of diseases, and 1.8 million Americans are newly diagnosed each year. Treatment issues such as drug instability, the occurrence of severe side effects, as well as resistance make the need for solutions to improve conventional methods, like chemotherapy, apparent. Nano-sized drug-delivery platforms, particles loaded with therapeutic molecules that escape the immune system clearance and accumulate at the tumor site, were proposed as one of these solutions. Despite the expansion of the field, several aspects still need to be addressed: inconsistent delivery of the drugs, inability of measuring the effective dose being delivered to the tumor, lack …

Fabrication Of Copper Nanoparticle/Graphene Oxide Composites And Reduction Of Copper Oxide Nanowires, Maged Elshatoury Jan 2022

Fabrication Of Copper Nanoparticle/Graphene Oxide Composites And Reduction Of Copper Oxide Nanowires, Maged Elshatoury

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

The thesis reports the investigation of producing copper nanoparticle composites with graphene oxides (GO) using poly (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) and copper nanowires through the reduction of copper oxide nanowires using hydrazine. It was discovered that PSS improved the dispersity of GO and increased the absorption of copper ions on GO. An electrochemical reduction of GO/PSS/copper ion dispersion produced copper nanoparticles on GO surfaces. Reducing copper oxide nanowires on copper foils using hydrazine was achieved at a temperature where copper nanowires maintained their nanoscale structures.

Encapsulation Of Essential Oils In Nanocarriers For Active Food Packaging, Shubham Sharma, Lilly Mulrey, Megan Byrne, Amit Jaiswal, Swarma Jaiswal

Articles

Active packaging improves a packaging system’s effectiveness by actively integrating additional components into the packaging material or the headspace around the packaging. Consumer demand and awareness have grown enough to replace chemical agents with natural active agents. Essential oils (EOs) are extensively distributed throughout nature but at low levels and sometimes with poor recovery yields, which poses an issue with their application in food. Due to the instability of EOs when added directly into a food product, they require encapsulation before being added to a packaging matrix such as liposomes, solid-lipid nanoparticles, nano-emulsions, cyclodextrins, and nanostructured lipid nano-carriers. This article …

Improving Quality Of Cvd Graphene Grown On The Copper Foil By Physical Polishing Electropolishing And Thermal Annealing Pretreatment Processes, Methawut Sirisom

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study optimized the pretreatment processes (physical polishing (PP), electropolishing (EP), and thermal annealing) for high-quality graphene growth on thin copper (Cu) foils. PP using Brasso solvent was applied to smoothen the substrate surface, followed by EP with H3PO4 to reduce rolling lines and surface contamination. The EP process involved different H3PO4 concentrations (30-60%) and etching times (60-120 seconds). After thermal annealing at 860-940 ºC, graphene growth was performed using direct-liquid-injection chemical-vapor deposition with cyclohexane (C6H12) as the carbon precursor and nitrogen as the carrier gas. The optimized conditions involved PP and EP with 45% H3PO4 concentration and 90 seconds …

Type Iii And Iv Deformation Twins In Minerals And Metals, John P. Hirth, Greg Hirth, Jian Wang Jan 2022

Type Iii And Iv Deformation Twins In Minerals And Metals, John P. Hirth, Greg Hirth, Jian Wang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Type IV twins are defined and shown to exist in triclinic crystal systems, as well as in some monoclinic and trigonal systems. Here, we focus on Pericline twins in triclinic plagioclase as an example. Type IV twins are associated with the irrationality of one of the twinning elements that is rational for a type II twin. The formation of type IV twins is accomplished through the shear on a K2 plane produced by the motion of twinning disconnections on a K1 plane, followed by rotational partitioning. The same systems where type IV twins are present also have type III twins …

Emissivity Prediction Of Functionalized Surfaces Using Artificial Intelligence, Greg Acosta, Andrew Reicks, Miguel Moreno, Alireza Borjali, Craig Zuhlke, Mohammad Ghashami

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Tuning surface emissivity has been of great interest in thermal radiation applications, such as thermophotovoltaics and passive radiative cooling. As a low-cost and scalable technique for manufacturing surfaces with desired emissivities, femtosecond laser surface processing (FLSP) has recently drawn enormous attention. Despite the versatility offered by FLSP, there is a knowledge gap in accurately predicting the outcome emissivity prior to fabrication. In this work, we demonstrate the immense advantage of employing artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to predict the emissivity of complex surfaces. For this aim, we used FLSP to fabricate 116 different aluminum samples. A comprehensive dataset was established by …

Construction Of A Peridynamic Model For Viscous Flow, Jiangming Zhao, Adam Larios, Florin Bobaru Ph.D. Jan 2022

Construction Of A Peridynamic Model For Viscous Flow, Jiangming Zhao, Adam Larios, Florin Bobaru Ph.D.

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

We derive the Eulerian formulation for a peridynamic (PD) model of Newtonian viscous flow starting from fundamental principles: conservation of mass and momentum. This formulation is different from models for viscous flow that utilize the so-called “peridynamic differential operator” with the classical Navier- Stokes equations. We show that the classical continuity equation is a limiting case of the PD one, assuming certain smoothness conditions. The PD model for viscous flow is calibrated to the classical Navier-Stokes equations by enforcing linear consistency for the viscous stress term. Couette and Poiseuille flows, and incompressible fluid flow past a regular lattice of cylinders …
