Social Types In The Novels Of Ciro Alegría And Jorge Icaza, Sandra Russell Martínez Jan 1966

Social Types In The Novels Of Ciro Alegría And Jorge Icaza, Sandra Russell Martínez

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

"Throughout the Andes eight out of ten people are Indians. , They are the destiny of Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia--but also a national burden..." The problems presented by this group are of primary importance, not only because the Indians represent such a large percentage of the population but also because factors such as modern communications make the indigent aware of his own misery as well as of the vast well-being which other groups enjoy. As novelists of Peru and Ecuador turn to examine national problems, their works provide us with new, amplified insight. Although their interpretations may seem exaggerated, they …

Santiago Arguello, Modernista Nicaraguense, 1872-1940, Mila Anne Harmeling Jan 1965

Santiago Arguello, Modernista Nicaraguense, 1872-1940, Mila Anne Harmeling

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Realism In The Works Of Marta Brunet, Gertrude Steudler Landis Aug 1963

Realism In The Works Of Marta Brunet, Gertrude Steudler Landis

Masters Theses

The order in which the various subdivisions of this thesis are presented is: Biography of the author, discussion of her principal works, a short discussion of realism in literature and the listing of the six main criteria, the study of the works under each of these criteria and our Conclusions. A short Bibliography is appended.

As is sure to be the case with an author who is still relatively young and who, we hope, will continue for many years to produce other worthwhile books, it is difficult to consider the study conclusive. In the meantime, however, it is hoped that …

A Survey Of The English Language In The Philippines And The Various Filipino Dialects And The Development Of Tagalog As A National Language, Vidal Serrano Mata Jan 1950

A Survey Of The English Language In The Philippines And The Various Filipino Dialects And The Development Of Tagalog As A National Language, Vidal Serrano Mata

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This Master Thesis aims to discuss the language mix-up in the Philippines. Originally, the people speak different dialects because of the lack of interaction due to geographical isolation. The Spaniards brought Spanish to them, which became the official language of the government until the Americans came and made English the medium of instruction in the school.

The trouble lies in the fact that English-speaking-and-loving Filipinos want English only, Spanish-speaking-and-loving Filipinos want Spanish only, Tagalog-speaking-and-loving Filipinos want Tagalog only while non-Tagalog-speaking Filipinos are either indifferent or prefer their respective dialects. This is the uncomfortable mess created by the principles of democracy …

Historic-Critical Description Of Libro De Buen Amor Of Juan Ruiz, Flora Sarinopoulos Jun 1948

Historic-Critical Description Of Libro De Buen Amor Of Juan Ruiz, Flora Sarinopoulos

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

My purpose has been to give a historical description of the Libro de buen amor . This I have it expedient to do by creating four broad categories: First, a brief introduction to the author and book; second, generalities about Juan Ruiz' attitude toward love; third, illustrations in respect to characterization, human behavior, local color, proverbs, and apologues; and fourth, a classification of the comedy of the work.

The Portuguese Complimentary Infinitive After Nouns And Adjectives, Peter J. Lunardini May 1948

The Portuguese Complimentary Infinitive After Nouns And Adjectives, Peter J. Lunardini

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The Portuguese usage of the preposition following verbs has been thoroughly studied by Francisco Fernandes in his Dictionàrio de verbos e regimes. However, the preposition required to supplement a noun or an adjective before a complementary infinitive has been virtually excluded from Portuguese dictionaries. It is the purpose of this thesis to present a study, together with examples, of this important phase of Portuguese syntax.

To obtain this information, thirty-one works of nineteen modern Portuguese and Brazilian authors were carefully examined, and the prepositional usage was recorded. The following general conclusions are based upon approximately 4,000 examples collected.

El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote De La Mancha, Dorothy Flammer

This book is being edited at the suggestion of colleagues who feel a great need for a Spanish reader with the the following qualifications:

  1. A good connected story from Spanish Literature
  2. Subject matter suitable for adolescents
  3. Sufficiently simple for use in Beginning Spanish

This is an edited version of Part One, and consequently is simplified and cut. Many authorities prefer to wait until students get to college so that they may be introduced to the great masterpiece in its original. Folklore In The Contemporary Spanish American Novel, Anita M. Noble Oct 1944

Folklore In The Contemporary Spanish American Novel, Anita M. Noble

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The novel of Spanish America is especially rich in all types of folklore. This is particularly due to the fusion of the Spanish and the Indian peoples in a common life with different cultural heritages.

"Sometimes one type of folklore, sometimes another, finds great favor among a certain folk." Thus we will notice that witchcraft as a religious rite predominates in the people of Indian culture. Magic and the supernatural stand out in all the classifications of the folklore of this race and is therefore evident in the Latin American novel dealing with the Indian people, or people from a …
