Applying Linguistics: Analyzing The Differences Between Human And Machine Translation Of Selected Texts, Nicole Howell

Honors Capstone Projects - All

Machine translation systems experience a trade-off between efficiency and efficacy: while quicker and easier than human translation, machine translations are less accurate and comprehensible.

This study analyzes two sets of English to Spanish translations to compare the differences between human and machine translation and evaluate the performance of machine translation. Google Translate—the best-performing machine translator—represents machine translation as a whole in producing English to Spanish translations of the given text. The primary investigator—a non-native speaker and graduating student of Spanish Language, Literature & Culture at Syracuse University—serves as the benchmark for the average non-native speaker of Spanish at the advanced-mid …

The end of the Spanish Civil War marked the beginning of Francisco Franco’s dictatorship, which lasted more than 35 years. Throughout this time, he systemized terror, executing more than 100,000 republican sympathizers in the first few years of his regime and marginalizing the remainder of the population. Therefore, the Fascist Era lasting from 1940-1975 is one plagued with strained relationships, ambiguous loyalties and distant relatives. The films El espiritú de la colmena by Victor Erice, Cría cuervos by Carlos Saura and El laberinto del fauno by Guillermo del Toro’s illustrate these kinds of challenges, from the point …

Honors Capstone Projects - All

After the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), the victorious fascist Nationalists dominated the liberal sympathizers and established Republican government and forced those unwilling to comply into exile. Once in a state of exile, how were Republican Spaniards able or unable to maintain their Spanish identity? By focusing on Mexico as a location of refuge for these exiles, this thesis seeks to determine the important role played by memory, both collective and individual, and how allowing themselves to connect to the past helped exiles and influenced future generations to learn about the past of their relatives. Using support from personal interviews and …

The Surrealist Woman: The Art Of Remedios Varo, Jacquelyn Yvonne White May 2014

The Surrealist Woman: The Art Of Remedios Varo, Jacquelyn Yvonne White

Honors Capstone Projects - All

Surrealism—a literary and artistic movement that has often been criticized for being misogynistic—stemmed from the idea of representing the unconscious mind, unburdened by societal norms. Several female surrealist artists and writers did emerge during the movement, including Remedios Varo, a Catalan surrealist painter. Throughout the early stages of her career, Varo was barely recognized by her male surrealist counterparts. Varo’s gender and background influenced her interpretation of femininity. When comparing Varo’s paintings with those of another famous Catalan surrealist, Salvador Dalí, the difference in the representation of women is striking. Unlike Varo, Dalí conformed to the typical depiction of the …

An L2 Spanish learner was found to default one gender for the definite article and another gender for the indefinite article. Adult L2 French speakers were found to display similar defaulting, to a lesser degree, perhaps attributed to experience with exceptions to patterns.

To enhance these results, I conducted a …
