Although Roberto Bolaño’s outwardly irreverent, stridently innovative fictions might not show it, the Chilean author read widely. Beyond the primary, ample influence of Jorge Luis Borges in Bolaño’s literary production, I believe James Joyce to be a clear second. This thesis uncovers the Joycean aesthetic specifically in Bolaño’s short story “Últimos atardeceres en la tierra,” (2001) where I contend that the author succeeds in joining the violence of Latin American fiction with the generative epiphany of the European Joyce, particularly from A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916). While our identities may appear to be independently created, that is often not the case. In Peru, as in much of Latin America, cultural and national identities that formed under Spanish colonial rule continued into the post-independence years. Nineteenth century authors created narratives of cultural and national identity that used “otherness” to delineate who was a proper member of society, and the categorization of separate identities remained entrenched in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In the case of Peru, separate identities based on geographic regions (the coast, the mountains, and the rainforest) and ethnic background (indigenous, afro-Peruvian, European) have persisted …

The Cuban Revolution that took place in 1959 sparked a mass movement of Cubans to leave the island known as the Cuban Diaspora. To live in another place, a country and within a culture drastically different is a continual internal and external confrontation that many Cubans face living in the United States. This research project analyzes the political and social effect of Teatro por la identidad’s most prominent productions A propósito de la duda (2000) by Patricia Zangaro, and El archivista (2001) by Héctor Levy-Daniel, during the post dictatorship era in Argentine theater. I will draw attention to the military dictatorship (la Junta Militar) who seized power from 1974 to 1983, and was responsible for the disappearance of 30,000 Argentines and the displacement of over 500 children. In the 1980s, Rita Quintero, a Tarahumara from northern Mexico, was detained in a mental hospital in Larned, Kansas for twelve years because of ignorance and maltreatment from Kansas state officials and health care workers. As a result of their inability and lack of effort to understand her culture, the doctors diagnosed Rita with schizophrenia and forced her to take psychiatric medications. Rita’s case eventually caught national and international attention, especially through the work of the Mexican playwright, Victor Hugo Rascón Banda (1948-2008) who produced the theater piece La mujer que cayó del cielo (2000) to detail the actual events …

The style of magical realism gives Boom generation authors of the 1950s and 60s—such as Alejo Carpentier, Gabriel García Márquez, and Julio Cortázar—the opportunity to explore what it would be like if the animal and human worlds combined. In their works, these authors portray animalism in the form of human-animal metamorphosis, hybridization, and the crossing-over of identity. Philosopher Gilles Deleuze calls this process of transformation becoming-animal and states that the becoming-animal challenges the traditional power structure of man's superiority over animals. This thesis explores the works of Antoni Gaudí and his inspirations, mainly focusing on religion and nationalism. It also discusses the periods of art of the late 1800s to the early 1900s that allowed him to be free in his work, which led him to be a successful modern architect. This thesis is a study of the interaction of music and politics during the social movement in Catalonia, Spain, the nova cançó. This interaction demonstrates the importance of a cultural identity, imagined communities, and cultural planning for a nation. In the case of Catalonia, the nova cançó played an immediate crucial role in the transformation of society during the last years of the extremely repressive dictatorship of Francisco Franco (1939-1975). Franco controlled Spain ideologically through censorships and power over the media in order to spread his values of a unified, homogenous, nationalist fatherland. In this way, he destroyed the …

Park Street, a street in the neighborhood of Frog Hollow in Hartford, Connecticut, is often referred to as “The Hispanic Commercial Corridor of the Northeast” because of its concentration of small Latino-owned shops. It formed as a Latino community because of discrimination from other places in the metropolitan area, such as the suburbs. Largely due to restrictive covenants and redlining, Latinos had few choices on where to live. The low rent and vacancies in Frog Hollow lead them to the Park Street area, and by the end of the 1970s the area was majority Puerto Rican and immigrants from Latin …

What effect does the ubiquity of death in a traumatic experience have on an individual's memory and soul, and how is this manifested in one's written testimony? Through the analysis of their philosophical introspection, the testimonies of Primo Levi's The Drowned and the Saved, Jorge Semprún's Literature or Life, and Jacobo Timerman's Prisoner Without a Name, Cell Without a Number meditate on the atrocities they experienced during Levi and Semprún's incarceration under the Nazi regime in Europe between 1942 and 1945, and Timerman's imprisonment under the regime of Jorge Rafael Videla in Argentina between 1976 and 1983. Chinese immigration to Argentina is the fourth largest in the nation, after Bolivia, Paraguay, and Peru, yet the Chinese are the largest group of non-Spanish speaking immigrants in the country. In my thesis I explore the significance of such high rates of Chinese immigration to Argentina to further understand concepts of transculturation. “We are like an admirable, wandering Numancia, who prefers to die gradually than to admit defeat” (translated from Alfonso Guerra’s documentary, Exilio). Uttered during the fall of the Republican government during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), Spanish author Luis Araquistáin’s ominous phrase not only speaks to the slow death of Republican hopes while in exile, but also hearkens back to a small town in the north of Spain that existed in the second century AD. When faced with the term Romanticism, many people automatically think of the British poets, Wordsworth, Coleridge, or Byron, or the German philosopher Hegel and the writer Goethe. However, the Romantic Movement expanded far beyond northern Europe, and as it migrated it changed and took on different forms, so much so that when it reached Spain in the 1830s it had taken on a totally new form.
