“El Inglés Y El Spánich”: Translating The Heterolingualism Of La Frontera–A Critical Translation Of Luis Humberto Crosthwaite’S Estrella De La Calle Sexta, Nora E. Carr Jun 2022

“El Inglés Y El Spánich”: Translating The Heterolingualism Of La Frontera–A Critical Translation Of Luis Humberto Crosthwaite’S Estrella De La Calle Sexta, Nora E. Carr

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation offers an original translation and critical analysis of Crosthwaite’s Estrella de la calle sexta. In so doing it engages with recent work on contemporary Latin American literature, translation theory, and border theory, while also offering a version of Crosthwaite’s text—itself a seminal work in studies of the Tijuanan imaginary—that will be accessible to anglophone readers. The critical chapters, too, will allow scholars of the border to revisit the stories of Estrella through the lenses of language, translation, and heterolingualism. Chapter One offers a reevaluation of the mode of translation theory that posits translation as a textual transfer from …

A Survey To Highlight Areas Of Focus For Patient Care In Settings Utilizing Medical Interpretation, Azayzel Deregis May 2022

A Survey To Highlight Areas Of Focus For Patient Care In Settings Utilizing Medical Interpretation, Azayzel Deregis

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis recounts my personal experience working as a volunteer medical interpreter for the Language and Culture Resource Center at East Tennessee State University. The result of my time spent volunteering as a medical interpreter, shadowing professional medical interpreters, and witnessing patient-provider interactions during interpreted sessions was an inspiration to study medical interpretation further and delve into the challenges faced by patients who require medical interpreters. During my time researching this topic, I found that the United States is severely lacking in Spanish medical interpreters—with some healthcare facilities employing no medical interpreters—even though the size of the Hispanic population is …

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Learning for ALL (LFA) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit based in Omaha, NE. LFA offers resources to adults in the community by offering a variety of classes in literacy, English language, and Adult Basic Education. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, much of the learning at LFA has transitioned to the online learning portal, Burlington English. However, the fact that Burlington English is presented and written in English poses a large barrier to the accessibility of online learning material. Current LFA management utilizes Google Translate to try and translate the steps to log into this platform and while a valuable tool, Google …

Queer Memory In Translation: The Work Of Pedro Lemebel, Jordan Gerue Jan 2020

Queer Memory In Translation: The Work Of Pedro Lemebel, Jordan Gerue

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Abstract

Translating texts produced by marginalized communities offers readers the chance to learn about the political and social realities of the marginalized in their own words. However, in the process of creating a work that can be consumed by the target audience, it is possible to omit cultural differences in a way that hinders rather than helps readers understand the original culture. By translating representative samples of the unique “crónicas” of Chilean author and artist Pedro Lemebel with attention to queer translation praxis, readers can explore and better understand the queer urban subculture of Santiago de Chile from the 1970s …

A Corpus-Based Study On The Portuguese Translations Of English Adversative Coordinating Conjunctions And Adverbs In News Texts, Marcella Cerqueira Cascione Cerqueira Netto Jan 2019

A Corpus-Based Study On The Portuguese Translations Of English Adversative Coordinating Conjunctions And Adverbs In News Texts, Marcella Cerqueira Cascione Cerqueira Netto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examines how adversative coordinating conjunctions and conjunctive adverbs are translated from English into Brazilian Portuguese through a parallel corpus built specifically for this research. The corpus is composed of 59 news articles extracted from the online versions of the British magazine The Economist and the Brazilian newspaper O Estado de São Paulo. While the former contains the original source texts, the latter consists of their respective translations. This research aims to verify if the translations of the adversative coordinating conjunctions and adverbs provided by four online bilingual dictionaries are the same or different from the ones …

A Project For A Translation Into Guarani Based On An Analytical Interpretation Of A Medieval Apologue, Nathalie Amato Jan 2019

A Project For A Translation Into Guarani Based On An Analytical Interpretation Of A Medieval Apologue, Nathalie Amato

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Tragicomic Transpositions: The Influence Of Spanish Prose Romance On The Development Of Early Modern English Tragicomedy, Josefina Hardman Nov 2017

Tragicomic Transpositions: The Influence Of Spanish Prose Romance On The Development Of Early Modern English Tragicomedy, Josefina Hardman

Doctoral Dissertations

The critical origin story for early modern English stage tragicomedy has frequently centered around Italian playwright and theorist Giambattista Guarini, who offered a tragicomic model in his play Il pastor fido (The Faithful Shepherd) and in his treatises on the genre. While Guarini’s impact on playwrights such as John Fletcher is undeniable, tragicomic critics have generally ignored the pervasive influence of Miguel de Cervantes’ work on seventeenth-century English playwrights. This project is the first sustained study of the influence of Cervantean prose romance on the development of early modern English tragicomedy. By looking at English tragicomedies with Spanish …

A Lesson In Loving The Word: Translating Clarice Lispector Into Polish, Agnieszka Gabor Jul 2017

A Lesson In Loving The Word: Translating Clarice Lispector Into Polish, Agnieszka Gabor

Masters Theses

The goal of this thesis is to discuss Clarice Lispector in the Polish context and address the potential gaps in the reception of her oeuvre. Since the principal vehicle of popularizing her writing outside of the Portuguese-speaking world is translation, my thesis also examines the current situation of the Polish translations of Lispector’s work. Based on my research, I contend that the angle of interpretation related to Lispector’s literary awareness has not been well explored in Poland. Given that the perspective related to the creation process constitutes a recurrent characteristic of Lispector’s narrative, I provide a textual analysis of four …

Found In Translation: An Analysis Of Popular American Film In Spain, Emily Dushek

Honors Projects

This research examines American popular film in Spain with the aim of understanding if and how removing a popular text (such as a film) from its original language and socio-cultural context and translating it for consumption in a different language and culture affects the interpretation of the film. The study delves into the very successful 2012 films The Avengers (Joss Whedon) and Django Unchained (Quentin Tarantino) and uses textual analyses and comparisons of the original English and the translated Castellano Spanish versions of the films, specifically focusing on the translations, as well as analyses of film reviews and critiques written …

Póliza: A Bilingual Anthology Of Postmodern Peninsular Spanish Women Poets, Jacqueline Osborn May 2016

Póliza: A Bilingual Anthology Of Postmodern Peninsular Spanish Women Poets, Jacqueline Osborn

Honors Projects

Within this project I endeavor to translate a series of poems from seven postmodern female Spanish poets, exploring the challenges and idiosyncrasies of not only the migration between languages, but those specifically between Spanish and English as well as those particular to poetry translation. Of course, there are inherent limits to this process. Regarding the differences between English and Spanish, such difficulties as the presence of naturally reflexive verbs, neutral pronouns, more efficient nominalization of adjectives, and the greater presence of the subjunctive tense in Spanish arise. Respecting the problem of poetry, the structure, rhythm, and even the tone of …

Translating Andrew Kaufman's 'Signs Of The Cross' (Back) Into Spanish, Berenice Ventura Fernandez

Theses and Dissertations

Inadequate Translations: Spanish/English Discrepancies In The Translated Sonnets Of Garcilaso De La Vega, Jessica V. Palmer Aug 2015

Inadequate Translations: Spanish/English Discrepancies In The Translated Sonnets Of Garcilaso De La Vega, Jessica V. Palmer

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The intimate relationship one develops with his or her native language is an experience which cannot be replicated through any amount of education. Diction, vocabulary, intonation and the connotations which accompany the many facets of language all develop along with us as we progress through life's experiences. Because of this deeply ingrained personal understanding, each individual's perspective towards a work of art, namely poetry, is completely unique to his or her experiences with the language in which it is written. Therefore, no amount of diligent translation can make a poem inhabit the same sentiment and effect in any language other …

Posibilidades De La Abstracción: La Obsesión Y La Traducción En Los Cuentos De Julio Cortázar, Caitlin Dougherty Jan 2013

Posibilidades De La Abstracción: La Obsesión Y La Traducción En Los Cuentos De Julio Cortázar, Caitlin Dougherty

Honors Papers

Spanish Translation Of Sze-Man Lam's “All About Sexuality: Gender Studies In Pedro Almodovar's Films”, Kurt Ryan Schultheis

World Languages and Cultures

I started researching possible senior project options with the idea in mind of writing a scholarly paper about the films of Pedro Almodóvar. When I looked at all that had been written about him already, I suddenly felt overwhelmed. It seemed that everything that could possibly be said about Almodóvar had already been said, and what could I possibly have to add? Then I found Sze-man Lam's Master of Arts thesis that she wrote in 2004 at the University of Hong Kong. As I read it, I thought, “This is the paper that I wanted to write!” I had all …

Unamunian Microcosms: Four Short Stories In A New Translation Into English, Emily A. Davis May 2008

Unamunian Microcosms: Four Short Stories In A New Translation Into English, Emily A. Davis

Theses and Dissertations

Spanish writer Miguel de Unamuno's short fiction is neglected in both the academic and nonacademic communities, and it is especially underrepresented in English-language translation. This thesis constitutes a comprehensive approach to four short stories: "El que se enterró," "La manchita de la uña," "Mecanópolis," and "Batracófilos y batracófobos." A detailed exploration of thematic resonances among them, and between these and other works by Unamuno, precedes side-by-side translations of all four texts, of which only "Mecanópolis" has been previously published in English translation.

Beyond Fidelity: The Translation Process In Two Adaptations Of Juan Marsé’S El Embrujo De Shanghai, Jessie Louise Christensen May 2007

Beyond Fidelity: The Translation Process In Two Adaptations Of Juan Marsé’S El Embrujo De Shanghai, Jessie Louise Christensen

Theses and Dissertations

In the past, the study of film adapted from literature has focused largely on the question of fidelity. This thesis explores new ways to look at the relationship between literature and film by showing how concepts from the field of translation studies, particularly literary translation, can enrich the study of adaptation theory. An application is made to the case of Spanish novelist Juan Marsé’s work El embrujo de Shanghai, which has been adapted to film by Fernando Trueba and to screenplay by Victor Érice. Rather than taking a hierarchical approach to the novel and its two variations, a comparative approach …
