No. 18: The State Of Food Insecurity In Blantyre City, Malawi, Peter Mvula, Asiyati Chiweza

African Food Security Urban Network

Chronic food insecurity is considered to be one of the most important challenges facing the people and government of Malawi. Most attention tends to be given to the rural areas where the majority of the population live and where the prevalence of food insecurity is highest. However, Malawi is urbanizing at a rapid rate and those who move to the cities do not automatically become food secure. Urban food insecurity is likely to increase and therefore it is important for policy-makers to begin to think about this issue. AFSUN’s study of food insecurity in the city of Blantyre, Malawi’s industrial …

No. 19: The State Of Food Insecurity In Lusaka, Zambia, Chileshe Mulenga

African Food Security Urban Network

The Lusaka urban food security survey done by AFSUN as part of its baseline survey of 11 Southern African cities found that up to 93% of the households in the informal settlements, which house three-quarters of the Zambian capital’s population, were food insecure. A paltry 8% were food secure. Worse still, most of the households in the informal urban settlements of Lusaka did not only have poor access to food, they also consumed foods from a very narrow range of food groups. Their diets were dominated by cereals and therefore likely to be deficient in essential vitamins, minerals and proteins. …

Moveable Feasts: Locating Food Trucks In The Cultural Economy, Jessa M. Loomis 2013 University of Kentucky

Moveable Feasts: Locating Food Trucks In The Cultural Economy, Jessa M. Loomis

Theses and Dissertations--Geography

In this thesis, I consider the emergence of a new generation of food trucks and question their popularity, narration and representation. I examine the economic and cultural discourses that have valorized these food trucks, and pay attention to the everyday material and embodied practices that constitute them. This research is situated in Chicago, where proposed changes to the existing mobile food vending ordinance spurred contentious debates about food safety, regulations, rights to the city and livelihoods. I follow the myriad actors involved in the food truck movement to understand the strategies employed to change the mobile food vending ordinance on …

Comment On Elizabeth Anderson's The Imperative Of Integration, Ronald Sundstrom 2013 University of San Francisco

Comment On Elizabeth Anderson's The Imperative Of Integration, Ronald Sundstrom

Philosophy

Elizabeth Anderson draws the attention of moral, social, and political philosophy to the idea of integration, an idea that is most often associated with the struggles to desegregate schools and neighborhoods in the years before and after the U.S. Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board. Her book, The Imperative of Integration, is a remarkable contribution because integration is not frequently mentioned outside of debates in the fields of urban affairs and education policy, and residential integration and segregation are rarely mentioned in academic philosophy. There are, however, some concerns with her defense of her defense of integration that …

Development Of Msw Collection Services On Regional Scale : Spatial Analysis And Urban Disparities In North-East Region, Romania, Florin C. Mihai

Florin C MIHAI

The cities are facing illegal dumping of municipal solid waste (MSW) because the waste collection facilities do not cover the entire population. Furthermore, this sector is poorly developed in small towns or villages annexed to administrative territory units (ATU) of cities , MSW are disposed in open dumps polluting the local environment. This paper analyzes on the one hand the urban disparities on public access to waste collection services (WCS) in the North-East Region on the other hand, it performs a comparative analysis between 2003 and 2010 outlining the changes made in the context of Romania’s accession to EU. Also, …

Eu Acquis Compliance On Urban Waste Management. Case Study: Piatra Neamt , Romania, Florin C. Mihai, Liviu Apostol, Dan Chelaru, Adrian Ursu

Florin C MIHAI

This paper examines the current challenges in urban waste management systems under EU regulations for a newcomer state. Piatra Neamț is among the first Romanian cities which made the transition from a traditional to a modern waste management infrastructure through ISPA funds. These changes are poor reflected in rate of recyling and treatment so far according to analysis of waste streams. The paper performs a critical review of waste management services and also assesses the vulnerability to illegal dumping. Inappropriate sites of waste management facilities contribute to environmental pollution and urban landscape degradation. Comparative analysis between pre-accession period vs. current …

Supporting Permanently Affordable Housing In The Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Program: An Analysis Of State Qualified Allocation Plans, Marla Nelson, Elizabeth Source 2013 University of New Orleans

Supporting Permanently Affordable Housing In The Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Program: An Analysis Of State Qualified Allocation Plans, Marla Nelson, Elizabeth Source

Marla Nelson

The Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program is the country’s largest source of federal subsidy for affordable housing. Since its inception, the program has financed more than 2.2 million housing units, accounting for about one-sixth of all rental housing in the country.1 Limited affordability periods, and the ability for property owners to “opt out” of the program after 15 years, have raised concerns about the loss of affordable units to market rate conversion, particularly in strong housing markets. Organizations that provide permanently affordable housing, often referred to as “shared equity” models, can ensure the affordability and stewardship of LIHTC …

Desenho Urbano, Planejamento E Politicas De Desenvolvimento Em Curitiba, Clara Irazabal

Clara Irazabal

Our Own Private Sustainable Community: Are Green Covenants, Conditions, And Restrictions A Viable Alternative To A More Environmentally Sustainable Future For Homeowners?, Darren Prum, Robert Aalberts 2013 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Our Own Private Sustainable Community: Are Green Covenants, Conditions, And Restrictions A Viable Alternative To A More Environmentally Sustainable Future For Homeowners?, Darren Prum, Robert Aalberts

Darren A. Prum

Residential and commercial property owners have sought for centuries to develop and enrich their physical environment through private land use planning. In more recent decades, residential owners residing in community interest communities have been particularly active in crafting an evolving array of deed restrictions contained in Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions( CC&R’s). CC&R’s, which are generally created by the CIC developer , are mutually binding and enforceable against all those who live or conduct business in self-selected residential subdivisions or commercial developments . Importantly, CC&R’s are monitored sometimes quite forcefully, under the watchful eye of an empowered planned development association.

Aproximaciones A La Frontera, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq., Diana Mejía M.A., Johanna Espín M.A.

Form Follows Function: On The Interaction Between Real Estate Finance And Urban Spatial Structure, David S. Bieri 2013 University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

Form Follows Function: On The Interaction Between Real Estate Finance And Urban Spatial Structure, David S. Bieri

David S Bieri

The fundamental connection between the spatial development of cities and financial markets is a topic that has received little attention from either urbanists or economists. In this short piece, I argue that part of the post-crisis recovery is predicated on a multi-faceted understanding of the subtle causal linkages between financial flows and urban morphologies. Following a historical contextualization of my main argument, I speculate about the key channels through which the dialectical relationship between capital, its regimes of accumulation and its unequal spatial distribution affect the urban fabric. I identify two separate economic processes and historical developments that have co-defined …

Narrating Resilience: Transforming Urban Systems Through Collaborative Storytelling, Bruce Evan Goldstein, Anne Taufen Wessells, Raul Lejano, William Butler 2013 University of Colorado Boulder

Narrating Resilience: Transforming Urban Systems Through Collaborative Storytelling, Bruce Evan Goldstein, Anne Taufen Wessells, Raul Lejano, William Butler

Bruce Evan Goldstein

How can communities enhance social-ecological resilience within complex urban systems? Drawing on a new urbanist proposal in Orange County, California, it is suggested that planning that ignores diverse ways of knowing undermines the experience and shared meaning of those living in a city. The paper then describes how narratives lay at the core of efforts to reintegrate the Los Angeles River into the life of the city and the US Fire Learning Network’s efforts to address the nation’s wildfire crisis. In both cases, participants develop partially shared stories about alternative futures that foster critical learning and facilitate coordination without imposing …

Planning For Climate Change In Urban Areas: From Theory To Practice, Christine Wamsler, Ebba Brink, Claudia Rivera 2013 Associate Professor at Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies (LUCSUS)

Planning For Climate Change In Urban Areas: From Theory To Practice, Christine Wamsler, Ebba Brink, Claudia Rivera

Christine Wamsler

Climate change poses a serious threat to sustainable urban development, placing many cities at risk. Consequently, city authorities face the challenge of finding ways to include adaptation strategies into their work, although related knowledge and competence is still scarce and fragmented. With the aim of contributing to knowledge development and organizational learning, the objective of this paper is to critically review and compare current theoretical and practical approaches to adaptation planning in cities. First the conceptual characteristics and features of a climate-resilient city are identified. Second, the reciprocal linkages between climate-related disasters, urban form and city planning processes are analysed …
