This report describes the results of an in-depth market assessment study conducted for the Finance Fund by the Center for Economic Development and the Center for Housing Research and Policy at Cleveland State University’s Levin College of Urban Affairs. The Finance Fund, located in Columbus, Ohio, is a statewide nonprofit financial intermediary. It finds funding and provides resources to support organizations that assist low- and moderate-income families and communities.1 The Finance Fund works primarily within low-income rural and urban communities throughout the state of Ohio by connecting local community development organizations and small businesses with needed funding in the form …

Since its establishment in 1902, Lake Hospital System (LHS) has been a community-based, not-for-profit provider of comprehensive healthcare services to the residents of Lake, eastern Cuyahoga, Geauga, and Ashtabula Counties. Today, LHS is the largest employer in Lake County, with 500 physicians and over 2,400 healthcare professionals working in seven facilities.

This study is an update of two previous reports commissioned by the Northeast Ohio technology Coalition (NorTech) that examined the high-tech sector in Northeast Ohio (NEO). It focuses on two time periods: 2004-2007, the last recovery period, and 2006-2007, the latest one-year change. Four major perspectives are reflected in this year’s analysis: (1) changes in overall NEO high-tech trends in comparison to the Midwest and the United States, (2) analysis of technology groups within the high-tech sector, (3) detailed analysis of bioscience in Northeast Ohio using the industry definition adopted by BioOhio, and (4) track of the NEO research and …

The economic value of an urban university to a metropolitan region is comprised of (1) the educational opportunities provided to students who rely on local institutions of higher education, (2) the unique contributions of urban universities to the social and political infrastructure of a region, and (3) the research and service contracts and other funds and philanthropic donations attracted to the campus by faculty and staff. This study uses several indicators to measure the strengths and weaknesses of the high-tech sector in Northeast Ohio (NEO) in comparison to the U.S. High-tech industries are analyzed in terms of employment, average wage, gross regional product (output), and productivity. High-tech occupations are analyzed in terms of employment. Research and development activity is analyzed by examining trends in industry R&D funding and academic R&D expenditures.

Amidst concern about the implications of an aging U.S. population, recent evidence suggests that there is a unique aging trend among the homeless population. Building on this, we use data from New York City and from the last three decennial Census enumerations to assess how the age composition of the homeless population—both single adults and adults in families—has changed over time. Findings show diverging trends in aging patterns for single adults and adults in families over the past 20 years. Among single adults, the bulk of the sheltered population is comprised of persons born during the latter part of the …
