Servant-Leadership: A Feminist Perspective, Kae Reynolds

At the heart of this paper is the notion that servant-leadership has potential as a feminism-informed, care-oriented, and gender-integrative approach to organizational leadership. Although there is a significant body of literature on feminist and gender-based interpretations of leadership, the same is not true for servant-leadership. The main contributors to date include Crippen's (2004) narrative inquiry of three women servant-leaders, Eicher-Catt's (2005) feminist critique of servant-leadership, Oner's (2009) and Barbuto and Gifford's (2010) empirical studies of gender differences in servantleadership, and Ngunjiri's (2010) phenomenological study of African women servant-leaders.

Although empirical data supporting the significance of servant-leadership abounds, in practice it is often an intangible art, a carefully executed dance of persuasion and stewardship, of empathy and healing, woven together with grace and humility. When the steps of this dance fall out of sync with the music of the community, alienation occurs, to the detriment of both the leader and the led.

In the United States, educational quality varies widely across school districts. For decades, many Americans have questioned education quality (Pulliam and Patten 2007; Urban and Wagoner 2009; Webb 2006). The twentieth century saw over thirty national reports and over 300 state and federal task forces look at how schools could improve (Giroux 2004). Despite these efforts, many remain dissatisfied with education in America (Strauss 2012).

Nationally, minority- and women-owned businesses suffer inequity in the construction marketplace(Blanchflower2008; Bloch 2003). In a world where the "good old boys" network can dominate the bidding and awarding of contracts, it may seem overwhelming for a small, private, faith-based nonprofit to seriously consider making an impact on the contract-awarding process. After an analysis of this case study using Spear's (2004) servant-leadership framework, we conclude that the Salvation Army created an impact, with millions in contract dollars going to unlikely candidates to serve its mission and promote community transformation.

The purpose of this paper is to ask whether North Carolina public service lawyers and judges believe that their judicial districts perform with maximum efficiency or whether there could be functional improvement with leadership and management training for system leaders, and with the perceived need of such training, as articulated by these professionals, what a general training model might look like. There is a dispoportionate number of female administrators in relation to the number of female-helmed classrooms in the United States. Jordan tackles the issue of gender in educational leadership. While the removal of legal and social barriers to administrative leadership in the twentieth century may have seemed to point the way toward a female-dominated leadership structure, she finds that female educational leaders are underrepresented at all levels. The study focused on Central Virginia. Jordan tried to uncover the common themes among female educators, including what differences existed between qualified classroom teachers and women who held positions of educational leadership.
