“Obesity Is A Disease”: Examining The Self-Regulatory Impact Of This Public-Health Message, Crystal L. Hoyt, Jeni L. Burnette, Lisa Auster-Gussman 2014 University of Richmond

“Obesity Is A Disease”: Examining The Self-Regulatory Impact Of This Public-Health Message, Crystal L. Hoyt, Jeni L. Burnette, Lisa Auster-Gussman

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

In the current work, we examined the impact of the American Medical Association’s recent classification of obesity as a disease on weight-management processes. Across three experimental studies, we highlighted the potential hidden costs associated with labeling obesity as a disease, showing that this message, presented in an actual New York Times article, undermined beneficial weight-loss self-regulatory processes. A disease-based, relative to an information-based, weight-management message weakened the importance placed on health-focused dieting and reduced concerns about weight among obese individuals—the very people whom such public-health messages are targeting. Further, the decreased concern about weight predicted higher-calorie food choices. In addition, …

Differentiation Of Self And Leadership Effectiveness In Christian Clergy: A Mixed Methods Study., Gregory D. Wasberg

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

"The present study utilized a mixed-methods approach to examine the relationship between self-differentiation and leadership effectiveness among 97 pastors in leadership positions from a variety of Christian religious denominations. Participants completed the Differentiation of Self and Role for Clergy and the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. Results of this study suggest that pastors performing in leadership roles have higher levels of self-differentiation than pastors performing in non-leadership roles and that self-differentiation was moderately and positively correlated with the transformational leadership components of intellectual stimulation and individualized consideration. For the qualitative portion of the study, fourteen pastors participated in telephone interviews about their …

Educational Leadership In A Fragile State: Comparative Insights From Haiti, Gaetane Jean-Marie, Steve Sider

Education Faculty Publications

Although there has been extensive examination of educational leadership in the developed world (e.g. Fullan, 2001; Leithwood & Sun, 2012), there has been much less research on school leadership in fragile states such as Haiti. This paper responds to Dimmock and Walker’s (2000) call for greater attention to comparative and international research on educational leadership specifically by examining school leadership in the Haitian context. The study on which this paper is based examines the experiences of eight school leaders in Haiti in response to the question: “What types of leadership practices do school leaders in Haiti exhibit?” Three themes are …

The Impact Of Impression Management Over Time, Mark Bolino, Anthony Klotz, Denise Daniels

SPU Works

Two studies were conducted – a lab study in which participants evaluated a confederate who performed an accounting task while using different types of IM across five trials, and a field study examining the IM tactics of new employees and their supervisors’ ratings of likability and performance at two points in time. In the lab study, the repeated use of ingratiation had an increasingly positive effect on performance ratings, whereas repeated apologies had …

Leadership And Management Training In The North Carolina Judicial System: An Examination Of Identified Need, James E. Hardin Jr.

Duke Law Master of Judicial Studies Theses

The purpose of this paper is to ask whether North Carolina public service lawyers and judges believe that their judicial districts perform with maximum efficiency or whether there could be functional improvement with leadership and management training for system leaders, and with the perceived need of such training, as articulated by these professionals, what a general training model might look like. A brief examination of the institutionally provided leadership and management training offered to system leaders shows sparse resources are expended to develop leaders and train them so that they have the skills to direct individual organizations and change the …

Absence Makes The Errors Go Longer: How Leaders Inhibit Learning From Errors, Qing Yan, Michelle C. Bligh, Jeffrey C. Kohles

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Learning and innovation are increasingly important for companies to compete in a global marketplace. Leaders are often in a position to exert significant influence on employees’ learning behaviors, and may also be able to foster learning from workplace errors. This cross-sectional research investigates the relationship between employee perceptions of leadership style, mindset (fixed vs. growth), and orientation to error learning. We examine five leadership styles – authentic, transformational, transactional, laissez-faire, and aversive leadership – and view them on an extended range, from more positive (authentic, transformational, and transactional) to more negative and destructive (laissez-faire and aversive). A sample of 268 …

Growing Taller: The Role Of Empathy And Acceptance In Building Up Followers, Jae Webb 2014 Gonzaga University

Growing Taller: The Role Of Empathy And Acceptance In Building Up Followers, Jae Webb

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

While unable to agree on many of the subtle points of what leadership is or is not, many scholars define leadership as the influence of one person over another person or persons with the impetus of completing a goal or objective (Northouse 2010; Chemers 2014; Chhokar, Brodbeck, and House 2004). Two concepts are predominate in this understanding of leadership. One is the objective of accomplishing tasks; the other is the presence of power or influence in the relationship between a leader and her or his followers. The latter sets the stage for the focus of this paper, the examination and …

An Examination Of Servant-Leadership Characteristics Displayed By Edmund Rice Christian Brothers, Everett Joseph Adams, Charles Salina, Joanie Eppinga

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

When Jesus Christ washed the feet of His followers and asked that they do the same for each other, He presented a servant-leadership style centered on empathy and agapao love, the compulsion to do the right thing, at the right time, for the right reasons. That style is as relevant today as it was so many years ago (Stone and Patterson 2005).
