The CDC identifies concussion as a blunt, blow, or jolt to the head resulting in brain injury. Shooting sports do not impose a direct blow to the head but instead inflict rapid acceleration to the brain via recoil transfer. Exposure to rapid, repetitive recoil may cause physiological disturbances in the brain, therefore resulting in mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). Background: In the United States (U.S.), falls are the leading cause of injury among adults 65 and over, resulting in 36 million falls yearly (Moreland et al., 2020). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2023), one in four older adults experiences a fall each year. Falls are the world's second most prominent cause of accidental deaths (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries among older adults (Moreland et al., 2020).

Annually, around 5 million people in the U.S. are admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICU) due to critical conditions, with pediatric patients comprising 21% of these admissions. Approximately 40% of pediatric ICU (PICU) patients require mechanical ventilation and extended stays, and about 6% result in death. Survivors often face long-term disabilities, including loss of skeletal muscle mass (SMM), a risk factor for morbidity and mortality. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans, often performed during PICU admissions, can assess muscle mass but pose risks of increased cost and radiation exposure. Thyroid dysfunction, such as thyrotoxicosis, can result from many different etiologies, including Graves' disease (GD), toxic multinodular goiter (MNG), and toxic adenoma. Alcohol use disorder (AUD) produces cognitive deficits, indicating a shift in prefrontal cortex (PFC) function. PFC glutamate neurotransmission is mostly mediated by α-amino-3‑hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid-type ionotropic receptors (AMPARs); however preclinical studies have mostly focused on other receptor subtypes. Here we examined the impact of early withdrawal from chronic ethanol on AMPAR function in the mouse medial PFC (mPFC). Dependent male C57BL/6J mice were generated using the chronic intermittent ethanol vapor-two bottle choice (CIE-2BC) paradigm. Non-dependent mice had access to water and ethanol bottles but did not receive ethanol vapor. Naïve mice had no ethanol exposure. We used patch-clamp electrophysiology to measure …

Introduction:The optimal management of femoral neck fractures in the young patient remains controversial. Although there are universally accepted principles, there remains some variability in the optimal timing of surgery and method of fixation. In general, surgery should be performed on an urgent or emergent basis when feasible to decrease peri-operative complications, length of stay, and most importantly the ultimate likelihood of avascular necrosis. However, it is important to note that the preference toward a specific method of fixation remains heterogeneous among orthopedic surgeons.(1)

Despite efforts to identify modulatory neuroprotective mechanisms of damaging ischemic stroke cascade signaling, a void remains on an effective potential therapeutic. The present study defines neuroprotection by very long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (VLC-PUFA) Elovanoid (ELV) precursors C-32:6 and C-34:6 delivered intranasally following experimental ischemic stroke. We demonstrate that these precursors improved neurological deficit, decreased T2WI lesion volume, and increased SMI-71 positive blood vessels and NeuN positive neurons, indicating blood–brain barrier (BBB) protection and neurogenesis modulated by the free fatty acids (FFAs) C-32:6 and C-34:6. Purpose: Vestibular/balance screeners can improve the efficiency of the diagnostic process. Despite prior literature illustrating the importance of screeners, research suggests that many professionals do not utilize screening protocols. Methods: Thirty-two audiologists and thirty-four physical therapists completed an electronic survey with questions regarding the use of screeners and the referral process. The survey examined variables surrounding the use of vestibular/balance screeners among audiologists and physical therapists, including frequency of use, commonly used screeners, and factors affecting the use or non-use of screeners. Spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) is a unique phenomenon that has been observed in astronauts who have undergone long-duration spaceflight (LDSF). The syndrome is characterized by distinct imaging and clinical findings including optic disc edema, hyperopic refractive shift, posterior globe flattening, and choroidal folds. Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common soft tissue cancer among
children, characterized by a skeletal muscle lineage that is impaired from
undergoing terminal differentiation. NF-κB is constitutively active in cancer cells
and plays a critical role in cell survival. Although NF-κB is also activated in RMS,
surprisingly we find that these tumors are less dependent on NF-κB to overcome
stress-induced cell death. Instead, RMS cells survive by being partially
differentiated under the control of the myogenic transcription factor MyoD. Loss of
MyoD or cellular reprogramming dedifferentiates RMS tumor cells and promotes
cell death when exposed to stress. Further, use of …
