Baseline Health Assessment Of A Rural Delta Community, Sydney Mitchell
Honors Theses
The Lower Mississippi Delta is characterized by poverty, chronic health issues, health disparities, and food insecurity. The rural Delta communities are primarily African American, experiencing disproportionately higher rates of poverty, job loss, and chronic health problems. Historically, chronic health issues have persisted in these areas over time, including obesity, hypertension, and diabetes, which have only seemed to increase in this region. The food environment in this rural region tends to assist in the creation of the largely obesogenic population which, in turn, contributes to the increased prevalence of diabetes and hypertension and a lower quality of life. Many residents in …

The Role Of Central Ace2 And Nrf2 In Sympatho-Excitation: Responses To Central Angiotensin Ii, Anyun Ma
Theses & Dissertations
Sympatho-excitation is a key characteristic in cardiovascular diseases such as chronic heart failure (CHF) and primary Hypertension (HTN). Evidence suggests that increased sympathetic tone is closely related to activation of the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone system (RAAS) in the central nervous system. An underlying mechanism for sympatho-excitation is thought to be oxidative stress resulting from Angiotensin II (AngII) type 1 receptor (AT1R) activation. Over the past several decades, pharmacological targeting of components of the RAAS have been used as standard therapy in CHF and HTN. However, additional therapeutic strategies are necessary to control these diseases. Oxidative stress is regulated, in part, by the …

Lipoprotein Associated Phospholipase A2 In Individuals With Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Kendall G. Clark
Masters Theses, 2020-current
Abstract
Introduction: Lipoprotein-associated Phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is a protein produced by inflammatory cells in circulation and is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Prior research demonstrates that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) leads to increased inflammation and is also related to CVD. Physical activity is known to reduce inflammation and risk for both CVD and OSA. However, Lp-PLA2 has yet to be examined in individuals with OSA who do not have any other pre-existing conditions nor has it been associated with chronic physical activity. The purpose of this study was to examine if there is a relationship …

Cardiovascular disease exerts a consistent force of morbidity and mortality on the global population. This pressure has created a demand for reliable replacement vascular tissues. Current solutions include synthetic grafts and biological transplant options that are associated with a multitude of complications. Therefore, the continued innovation of vascular tissue replacement solutions is warranted. Decellularized vascular tissues have been previously utilized as scaffolds upon which recellularized tissue engineered vascular solutions are constructed. However the interplay between decellularization agent concentration and effective recellularization has not been well documented. Herein we investigate this relationship through a detail oriented research model that both qualifies …

Lack Of Osteopontin Induces Systolic And Diastolic Dysfunction In The Heart Following Myocardial Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury, Caytlin James
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Ischemic heart disease is a leading cause of death worldwide. Osteopontin (OPN), a cell-secreted extracellular matrix protein, is suggested to play a cardioprotective role in mouse models of ischemic heart disease. The objective of this study was to examine the role of OPN in modulation of systolic and diastolic functional parameters of the heart following mouse ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. For this, wild-type (WT) and OPN-knockout (KO) mice aged approximately 4 months were subjected to cardiac ischemia for 45 minutes by the ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) followed by reperfusion of LAD by snipping the ligature. Heart …

Redesign And Quantitative Assessment Of An Accelerated Venous Valve Fatigue Apparatus, Megan Kueh
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a form of cardiovascular disease that is caused when valves in the leg become incompetent. Current treatment methods serve to manage symptoms, but there are currently no ways to treat the underlying cause of CVI. A venous valve prosthetic made from a xenograft of a bovine jugular vein is one possible treatment method currently in the research phase. Prosthetic valves must be tested with an accelerated wear tester prior to approval for clinical testing. Although such testers exist for heart valves, physiological differences between heart and venous valves restrict the use those testers on venous …

Modified Stent Design For A Coronary Bifurcation Lesion, Abigail Nowell
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Currently, 18.2 million adults aged 20 and older are diagnosed with Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) (Benjamin et al., 2019). Stenosis is the most common intervention. However, when a patient has a bifurcated artery, treatment becomes more difficult and is often unsuccessful. This project created a new stent and balloon complex that was tested in vitro using a gel phantom artery model. Two separate prototypes have been created and tested so far, with improvements made upon each. Testing is still underway with Prototype 2.

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
Abstract: Background/Introduction: Elevated glucose levels can increase the risk of diseases, such as metabolic syndrome and Type 2 Diabetes. Thus, knowing glucose levels is important to indicate the likelihood of future health complications. Unfortunately, many young adults do not know their glucose levels. Purpose: The purpose of this research study was to complete a cross- sectional study and determine associations between fasting glucose with physical activity, and fitness. I hypothesized more physical activity, and higher fitness, will result in a lower, fasting glucose level. Methodology: This study examined 26 participants aged 18-25. The participants completed an 8-hour fasted glucose measurement, …

Tobacco-Derived Aldehydes: Platelet Activation, Thrombosis, And The Role Of Trpa1., Andre Dwayne Richardson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cigarette smoking is the single largest risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) pathophysiology. Numerous researchers have shown potential associations between aldehydes in tobacco-derived aerosols from mainstream cigarette smoke (MCS) or electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) and their cardiotoxicity by damaging blood vessel endothelium. The severity of exposure to these toxicants can furthermore lead to adverse cardiovascular outcomes such as myocardial infarctions, stroke, coronary and peripheral artery disease, or atherosclerosis due to blood clots, a pro-thrombotic event. However, the mechanisms by which levels of harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) such as aldehydes induce thrombosis are not well-known. Of specific interest, evidence has …

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. Tobacco smoke is the most significant modifiable risk factor in CVD development and contains numerous toxic compounds, including aldehydes, which have been linked to CVD. Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein, and crotonaldehyde have been identified as significant contributors to cigarette-induced health effects, but the mechanism of these effects is not well understood. These aldehydes are also found in aerosols produced by e-cigarettes (e-cigs). The goal of this dissertation was to explore the systemic, hematological, and endothelium-related effects of exposure to tobacco products and constituent aldehydes and to identify potential mechanisms of injury. …
