Clickbait Science: A Review Of Rhetorical Patterns Within The Royal Society, Bryan T. Le

King Charles II of England gave birth to the Royal Society and the right for it to publish without interference in the seventeenth century. Out of this society came forth Philosophical Transactions, the first ever science journal. The journal, however, was not strictly bound to science. Articles within the journal exhibit a variety of unusual bits of information ranging from making water colors to constructing a bee-house. This paper shows that the Royal Society included articles that weren’t science but human interest to gather a following for themselves.

Developing Criteria To Establish Trusted Digital Repositories, John Faundeen

This paper details the drivers, methods, and outcomes of the U.S. Geological Survey’s quest to establish criteria by which to judge its own digital preservation resources as Trusted Digital Repositories. Drivers included recent U.S. legislation focused on data and asset management conducted by federal agencies spending $100M USD or more annually on research activities. The methods entailed seeking existing evaluation criteria from national and international organizations such as International Standards Organization (ISO), U.S. Library of Congress, and Data Seal of Approval upon which to model USGS repository evaluations. Certification, complexity, cost, and usability of existing evaluation models were key considerations. …

Who’S Talking About Scholarly Communication? An Examination Of Gender And Behavior On The Scholcomm Listserv, Clayton Hayes, Heidi Elaine Kelly

INTRODUCTION This study analyzes the gender dynamics of the American Library Association’s SCHOLCOMM listserv in order to determine the accuracy of concerns expressed by participants in early 2016 regarding an overrepresentation of male voices on the listserv. METHODS Utilizing the SCHOLCOMM listserv archive, openly available online, the authors analyzed metadata related to individual messages in order to create a comprehensive list of participants, which was then analyzed to determine gender identity. Many librarians and information specialists have a love hate relationship with this open access, free internet encyclopedia. Marshall University Libraries Enhance Scholarly Publication, Jingping Zhang, Larry Sheret

Marshall University Library has been experiencing a fruitful collaboration with various departments and programs on campus involving the publication of peer-reviewed journals, which are hosted on Marshall’s open access institutional repository (OAIR), Marshall Digital Scholar (MDS). Euscorpius, Marshall Journal of Medicine and Sermon Studies are currently publishing peer-reviewed research articles. Two other peer-reviewed journals are in the planning stage to begin publication this year. One of these, the Journal of Applied Digital Evidence (JADE) is a collaboration with the forensic sciences programs at Marshall University, Eastern Kentucky University and Purdue.

Open Educational Resources

The University of New Hampshire Survey Center conducted a survey of UNH faculty members about their usage, understanding, and needs from the University's Open Educational Resources (OER) program. An email invitation to complete the internet survey was sent to one thousand eight hundred and eighty-eight (1,888) UNH faculty members in March 2017. Overall, 437 faculty members responded to the survey, yielding a response rate of 23%. This report includes figures summarizing the survey results; detailed tabular results may be found in Appendix A, Appendix B contains the open-ended responses, and Appendix C contains the survey instrument.

In order to assist you in making the best decisions for your work, and to avoid journals that may not be credible, the William H. Hannon Library has developed a rubric for the evaluation of journals. Our focus during the development of this tool was specifically to address the concerns of our Loyola Marymount University faculty about Open Access journals, but this rubric may be applied more broadly to any kind of journal.

Citation Analysis Of Doctoral Theses References As A Tool For Collection Management In History: A Study Of Panjab University, Chandigarh (India), Preeti Mahajan, Anil Kumar

A citation analysis study was carried out on the citations appended in the end of History discipline Ph.D. dissertations to ascertain what types of documents are the most frequently used in the research process, the most commonly consulted core journals and obsolescence rate of the journals and books. The study analysed 8488 citations appended in the 36 Ph.D. theses of History discipline submitted to Panjab University, Chandigarh, for the award of doctoral degree during 2002-2012. The results obtained from the 8488 citations revealed that the most frequently used documents were books, which accounted for 54.16 percent of the total citations …

Academic web search engines have become central to scholarly research. While the fitness of Google Scholar for research purposes has been examined repeatedly, Microsoft Academic and Google Books have not received much attention. Recent studies have much to tell us about the coverage and utility of Google Scholar, its coverage of the sciences, and its utility for evaluating researcher impact. But other aspects have been understudied, such as coverage of the arts and humanities, books, and non-Western, non-English publications. User research has also tapered off. Librarians and instructional designers formed an informal partnership to promote low-cost textbook solutions in the absence of formal initiatives at a public, four-year institution. Learn how we negotiated institutional barriers such as bookstore contract prohibitions and protected revenue streams. Our case examples describe solutions and workflows undertaken to transform course materials, in addition to activities being pursued to make textbook affordability an institutional priority.

We have built a scholarly communication support service through liaison librarians who are provided with scholarly communication professional development.
