Technology has created important new possibilities to expand and enrich the scholar's work situation. The Internet, on-line databases, collaborative technologies including Listserv/discussion groups and teleconferencing have made it possible for nonprofit scholars to collaborate in innovative new ways and produce their work at unprecedented rates. Electronic technology is one of the significant forces underpinning the growth on nonprofit scholarship. A number of institutions have made great strides in providing a rich research environment for nonprofit scholars. Efforts to create on-line communities have been fruitful and rewarding. Nonprofit researchers can develop relationships and share ideas with others anywhere in the world. …

Challenges, Strategies, And Tools For Research Scientists: Using Web-Based Information Resources, Danielle Bodrero Hoggan

Scientists face many challenges in harnessing web-based resources. Information overload, misinformation, fees, poorly designed navigation, and loss of browsability all hamper the scientist searcher. In addition, many scientists rely on only one or two databases and often miss unique information that is available through other sources. Librarians can team up with scientists to develop strategies to overcome the challenges of web-based information. For example, a librarian can teach effective information seeking techniques, including how to use controlled vocabularies, how to evaluate information on the web, and how to complement web-based resources with print resources. As collection development librarians we aim to provide comprehensive information access to our users in order to support their research and curricular needs. For academic libraries, like the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, that support the information needs within a range of subject areas in science and technology, it makes economic sense to attempt to provide this access in discipline-oriented databases. Discipline-oriented databases cover a range of subjects but also provide depth in coverage.

This article brings to light the historical context of El Paso’s unknown and uncelebrated connection to the legendary Casasola family photo dynasty in Mexico. The local El Paso Casasola portrait studio photographer and owner did not capture iconic Mexican Revolutionary images like those of his contemporary famed photographer family members in Mexico City, but instead he recorded the visual memory of ordinary individuals and families residing in the US/Mexico border region.

Tatiana Bryant’s current research focuses on perceptions of Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Access amongst scholars who identify as Black, Indigenous, and people of color, with an emphasis on Ethnic Studies faculty and graduate students. Ethnic Studies is a discipline founded with a unique ethos centered in community building, public scholarship, and racial and social justice. This mission aligns with the philosophy of Open, specifically the creation and accessibility of OER. Despite this ideological alignment, there is a substantial lack of OER for Ethnic Studies.
