Looking Into Pandora's Box: The Content Of Sci-Hub And Its Usage, Bastian Greshake

Despite the growth of Open Access, potentially illegally circumventing paywalls to access scholarly publications is becoming a more mainstream phenomenon. The web service Sci-Hub is amongst the biggest facilitators of this, offering free access to around 62 million publications. So far it is not well studied how and why its users are accessing publications through Sci-Hub. By utilizing the recently released corpus of Sci-Hub and comparing it to the data of ~28 million downloads done through the service, this study tries to address some of these questions. This review surveys Femi Otulaja and Meshach Ogunniyi’s (2015) Handbook of Research in Science Education in Sub-Saharan Africa, noting the significance of the theoretically rich content and how this book contributes to the field of education as well as to the humanities more broadly. The volume usefully outlines the ways in which science education and scholarship in sub-Saharan Africa continue to be impacted by the region’s colonial history. Several of the chapters also enumerate proposals for teaching and learning science and strengthening academic exchange. At Loyola Marymount University (LMU), a medium-size, private institution, the Digital Library Program (DLP) began exploring and experimenting with automated processes to manage copyright clearance and ingest workflows with regards to faculty publications. This study investigates two questions key to academic library resources and services: Which sources are students most likely to use to begin their academic work? Whom do students tend to consult for research assistance? In-depth interviews conducted with 15 undergraduate and graduate students were thematically analyzed through a three-step process. The findings indicate that students are most likely to consult faculty and peers for assistance and are largely unaware of librarians' roles, while they tend to begin research using library databases and do not necessarily start with Google. At the spring 2017 CNI meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico, we held an Executive Roundtable on the topic of Rethinking Institutional Repository Strategies. We knew this was a timely topic for many of our member institutions, and we anticipated that many CNI member institutions would seek to attend this roundtable. Making a connection between digital repositories and library catalogues is an issue many libraries and archives face, especially when dealing with items that traditionally received full cataloguing records. This paper explores different workflows for reusing metadata to create catalogue records, connecting the two resources together. In order to have one interface to search both the older physical items and newer digital items, the archives and technical services department of the University of Arkansas Libraries worked together to create different workflows to save time and eliminate the need for double entry, using the open source software MarcEdit and XML Notepad. Fostering a culture of open scholarship on campus involves meeting scholars where they are both physically and academically. Both established and emerging scholars need to communicate with their peers, each other, and the public. Librarians and library staff can reach out to scholars in numerous ways, by creating online tools and meeting with people in person one-on-one, in small groups, in classrooms, or in large meetings. If policies and best practices do not serve scholars well, librarians need to consider revising them to align with scholars' workflows and desired outcomes.

More Than a Memory: Exploring Purdue University's History Through Objects extends a 2014 undergraduate effort, which resulted in the publication Little Else Than a Memory: Purdue Students Search for the Class of 1904. Purdue students in 2016-2017 academic year sought to understand the history of Purdue University and to recover the student experience more than 100 years prior, at the turn of the twentieth century. This research, conducted primarily within Purdue Archives and Special Collections, includes choosing, investigating, and analyzing the material objects those students left behind.
