Textbooks have long been an integral learning platform in higher education. As the rising cost of textbooks continues to burden students, many libraries have begun to facilitate the creation and publishing of open textbooks. While many colleges and universities have surveyed students about their textbook purchasing habits and interest in open textbooks, fewer surveys have captured student feedback on their actual hands on experiences with their resources. Portland State University (PSU) Library and the University of Minnesota (UofM) Libraries have both collected date from students about their experiences with open textbooks selected and created specifically for their courses.

A team of Bryant University Librarians are participating in the EXCITE Transformation for Libraries program through the Connecticut State Library. We conducted a series of structured group and one-on-one conversations with students, faculty, and staff in order to learn about how they think and feel about teamwork, the library, and collaboration at the library. We found that students in particular were far more responsive to community sessions than in taking surveys.

This white paper reports on the findings of the Digital Library Futures project (2017-2019), which investigates the impact of Non-Print Legal Deposit (NPLD) on academic legal deposit libraries and their users in the United Kingdom. It argues that discussions of NPLD have paid too little attention to user behaviour and requirements, and that it is necessary to adopt an ongoing user-focused evaluation framework to inform NPLD planning and implementation.

Background: In the development of a new institutional repository, library staff at a large health system were faced with building an organizational structure that would be meaningful to both internal and external users. The health system context meant unique challenges designing a taxonomy that supported end users as well as institutional goals and branding. Health systems have unique user needs for specialized collections and organizational schemes. With a comparatively large volume of items being added there are also concerns with the backend structures to accommodate the institutions’ large research output.

The study presents an outlook of publication trends of eLearning research in the Indian scenario during the last ten years (2009-2018.). The data collected from the Scopus Database using the specific query statement. A total of 8181 publications in different forms (journals article, conference papers, book chapters, etc.) were being collated, tabulated and analyzed and inferences were drawn for the study. Further, annual growth rate (AGR) of papers; most prolifically authors, institutions; most cited papers; h-index; and citation status has been provided.

Background: While more common in university settings, institutional repositories (IR) have a place within hospitals and healthcare systems too, though the challenges in creating them may be different. This paper looks at the development of a Digital Commons institutional repository at Providence St. Joseph Health. The authors present the necessary steps for a successful initiative beginning with the planning process and building from there. Highlighted are some of the different challenges faced in non-academic settings; considerations when selecting a platform and designing and structure; and recommendations for doing outreach and promotion to unique user groups.

In November 2018, Stanford Law School Library unveiled to the public an online exhibit of more than 100 oral histories of American women lawyers, scholars, judges, and government officials who helped diversify the legal profession in the late twentieth century. Called the “Women Trailblazers in the Law” Oral History Project, it is a collaboration between Stanford Law School Library and the American Bar Association. Developing countries comprise 40 percent of international downloads and 25 percent of all downloads from University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s institutional repository. This presentation will summarize the use of the Nebraska Digital Commons by representative countries in South Asia, East Asia and the Pacific, and Sub-Saharan Africa, the three regions where the most developing country downloads occurred in 2018. In 2018 Providence St. Joseph Health launched an institutional repository, primarily staffed by a librarian located in Oregon and a library assistant located in Montana with occasional help from other Library Services staff. Workflow and communication standards had to be created that would allow library staff in multiple locations and time zones to seamlessly launch, populate, and manage the institutional repository. Outreach, instruction, and promotion tactics had to also be created to reach researchers and clinical staff across six states and 100+ locations.

As requested, I have put down some notes on the methods and rules for typesetting and page composition of scholarly journals, articles, and books. These are intended to aid in the production of professional-looking digital documents of an academic nature. Adobe InDesign is a desktop publishing software, often marketed as part of Adobe Creative Suite. This is a short, 6-page do's and don'ts on achieving a classical scholarly page design. Library publishers may wish to consult and agree or disagree with the thoughts expressed. Three sample templates are attached that may be used and adapted by those who wish.

In 2017 Ithaka S+R launched a project to explore the changing research methods and practices of Indigenous Studies scholars across Canada and the US with the goal of identifying services to better support them in ways that are also beneficial to Indigenous communities more broadly. The project was undertaken by a cohort of research teams at 11 academic libraries with guidance from a group of advisors comprised of Indigenous scholars and librarians. Evaluative metrics have been used for research assessment in most universities and funding agencies with the assumption that more publications and higher citation counts imply increased productivity and better quality of research. This study investigates the understanding and perceptions of metrics, as well as the influences and implications of the use of evaluative metrics on research practices, including choice of research topics and publication channels, citation behavior, and scholarly communication in Irish universities. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with researchers from the humanities, the social sciences, and the sciences in various career stages. The University Academic Senate charged the OER/ACM Task Force to:

1. Explore current GVSU practices involving course material decisions.
2. Recommend strategies to recognize existing OER/ACM use by GVSU faculty.
3. Recommend strategies to increase use of existing OER/ACM services and support.
4. Recommend new initiatives or support to increase OER/ACM adoption by GVSU faculty.

This report fulfills these charges, providing information on the context of textbook usage at GVSU and delivering recommendations and possibilities for expanded OER/ACM support.

Faculty and institutions are increasingly called upon to present succinct, quantified descriptions of their research impact to administrators, funders, legislators, and academics. This project sought to explore how and what researchers think about research impact measures across disciplines and institutions. Presenters will discuss findings from a multi-institutional survey of faculty (n=1202) addressing their familiarity with metrics and altmetrics and impression of the accuracy of these metrics. We discuss how researchers use such statistical measures to demonstrate the importance of their scholarship, and their attitudes towards use of scholarly metrics by administrators.
