Today's 3D games consumers are expecting more and more quality in their games. To enable high quality graphics at interactive rates, games programmers employ a technique known as hidden surface removal (HSR) or polygon culling. P300 speller is a communication tool with which one can input texts or commands to a computer by thought. The amplitude of the P300 evoked potential is inversely proportional to the probability of infrequent or task-related stimulus. In existing P300 spellers, rows and columns of a matrix are intensified successively and randomly, resulting in a stimulus frequency of 1/N (N is the number of rows or columns of the matrix). We propose a new paradigm to display each single character randomly and individually (therefore reducing the stimulus frequency to 1/(N*N)). This paper investigates the issues in polyphonic popular song retrieval. The problems that we consider include singing voice extraction, melodic curve representation, and database indexing. Initially, polyphonic songs are decomposed into singing voices and instruments sounds in both time and frequency domains based on SVM and ICA. The extracted singing voices are represented as two melodic curves that model the statistical mean and neighborhood similarity of notes. To speed up the matching between songs and query, we further adopt proportional transportation distance to index the songs as vantage point trees. Encouraging results have been obtained through experiments.

Hand-held camcorders have been popularly used in capturing and documenting daily lives. Nonetheless, searching for personal memories in home videos is still a laborious task. This paper describes novel approaches in detecting snippets and patterns in home videos for content indexing. To deal with the fact that most shots are long and with handshake artifacts, a motion analysis algorithm based on Kalman filter and finite state machine is proposed to decompose videos into tables of snippets. This paper proposes a new approach and algorithm for the similarity measure of video clips. The similarity is mainly based on two bipartite graph matching algorithms: maximum matching (MM) and optimal matching (OM). MM is able to rapidly filter irrelevant video clips, while OM is capable of ranking the similarity of clips according to the visual and granularity factors. Based on MM and OM, a hierarchical video retrieval framework is constructed for the approximate matching of video clips. In this paper, we present a novel method for efficient 3D model comparison. The method is designed to match highly deformed models through capturing two types of information. First, we propose a feature point extraction algorithm, which is based on “Level Set Diagram”, to reliably capture the topological points of a general 3D model. These topological points represent the skeletal structure of the model. Second, we also capture both spatial and curvature information, which describes the global surface of a 3D model. Recommender systems attempt to reduce information overload and retain customers by selecting a subset of items from a universal set based on user preferences. While research in recommender systems grew out of information retrieval and filtering, the topic has steadily advanced into a legitimate and challenging research area of its own. Recommender systems have traditionally been studied from a content-based filtering vs. collaborative design perspective. We report the implementation of a text input application (speller) based on the P300 event related potential. We obtain high accuracies by using an SVM classifier and a novel feature. These techniques enable us to maintain fast performance without sacrificing the accuracy, thus making the speller usable in an online mode. In order to further improve the usability, we perform various studies on the data with a view to minimizing the training time required. We present data collected from nine healthy subjects, along with the high accuracies (of the order of 95% or more) measured online. We show that the …

This paper describes a new approach in locating the segments of singing voice in pop musical songs. Initially, GLR distance measure is employed to temporally detect the boundaries of singing voices and instrumental sounds. ICAFX is then adopted to extract the independent components of acoustic features for SVM classification. Experimental results indicate that ICA-FX can improve the classification performance by significantly reducing the independent components that are not related to class label information.

This paper proposes a unified approach for initializing, detecting and tracking of multiple moving objects. Object initialization is achieved through novel seed selection which is adaptively activated, depending on the quality of tracking, to select the best possible frames along the temporal direction for object detection. EM algorithm is then employed to robustly segment and detect multiple objects in a selected frame. Each detected object is represented by an appearance-based model and mean shift tracking procedure is adopted to rapidly and effectively track the target objects.

This paper presents a gesture based driven approach for video editing. Given a lecture video, we adopt novel approaches to automatically detect and synchronize its content with electronic slides. The gestures in each synchronized topic (or shot) are then tracked and recognized continuously. By registering shots and slides and recovering their transformation, the regions where the gestures take place can be known. Based on the recognized gestures and their registered positions, the information in slides can be seamlessly extracted, not only to assist video editing, but also to enhance the quality of original lecture video.

Improving classification accuracy is a key issue to advancing brain computer interface (BCI) research from laboratory to real world applications. This article presents a high accuracy EEC signal classification method using single trial EEC signal to detect left and right finger movement. We apply an optimal temporal filter to remove irrelevant signal and subsequently extract key features from spatial patterns of EEG signal to perform classification. In this paper, we present a novel method for efficient 3D model comparison. The method matches highly deformed models by comparing topological and geometric features. First, we propose “Bi-directional LSD analysis” to locate reliable topological points and rings. Second, based on these points and rings, a set of bounded regions are extracted as topological features. Third, for each bounded region, we capture additional spatial location, curvature and area distribution as geometric data. The use of anthropomorphic avatars provides Internet users the opportunity and freedom to present their desired identity. As cyberspace becomes a heaven for deceptive behavior, human-computer interaction research will need to be carried out to study and understand these deceptive behaviors. The objective of this research is to investigate the behavior of deceivers and truthtellers in the cyberspace environment and to examine how their intention to deceive may influence the choice of their avatars. The effect of using avatars to support communication will also be studied. This research provides insights on communication and trust issues in avatar environments.

Multimodal interfaces are becoming increasingly ubiquitous with the advent of mobile devices, accessibility considerations, and novel software technologies that combine diverse interaction media. In addition to improving access and delivery capabilities, such interfaces enable flexible and personalized dialogs with websites, much like a conversation between humans. Efforts to adapt various Arabetic scripts to the machine are as old as the field of typography. But most of these efforts concentrated primarily on forcing the machine to duplicate the Arabetic handwritten forms. Others have practically advocated divorce from the calligraphic tradition rather than enrichment and reform. Leading human-computer interaction (HCI) researchers recognize a fundamental difference exists between men and women. Some HCI research has been done regarding gender differences in hand-eye coordination for interactions with computer touch display interfaces, navigation through virtual environments (VE) and language in computer-mediated communication. In these previous studies, gender differences were found in the use of words and language in computer-mediated communication and in navigation strategies for VE but no gender-related differences were found for the hand-eye coordination needed to effectively use a touch display.

In this paper, we propose a novel approach for the robust detection and classification of dissolve sequences in videos. Our approach is based on the multi-resolution representation of temporal slices extracted from 3D image volume. At the low-resolution (LR) scale, the problem of dissolve detection is reduced as cut transition detection. At the highresolution (HR) space, Gabor wavelet features are computed for regions that surround the cuts located at LR scale. The computed features are then input to support vector machines for pattern classification. Encouraging results have been obtained through experiments.

An essential goal of structuring lecture videos captured in live presentation is to provide a synchronized view of video clips and electronic slides. This paper presents an automatic approach to match video clips and slides based on the analysis of text embedded in lecture videos. We describe a method to reconstruct high-resolution video texts from multiple keyframes for robust OCRrecognition. A two-stage matching algorithm based on the title and content similarity measures between video clips and slides is also proposed.
