From Data To Decision-Making: The Role Of Local Digital Twins In Cross-Domain Management Within Municipalities – A Research-In-Progress Study In Veenendaal, Diana M.E. Boekman, Koen Smit, Guido Ongena, Rob Peters

Communications of the IIMA

Municipalities are facing increasingly complex, interconnected challenges in areas like housing, climate adaptation, mobility, and social policy. Local Digital Twins (LDTs) are seen as a promising tool to make this complexity more understandable and support decision-making. At the same time, both literature and practice show that few initiatives get past the pilot phase, even though getting through that phase is essential for successful long-term adoption.

This paper presents a research-in-progress study on the development and application of an implementation method for LDT technology within the municipality of Veenendaal, based on human values rather than driven by technological possibilities. Based on …

Ml Playground: Data Modification/Preprocessing And Model Simulation Tool, Marco D. Cerrato May 2025

Ml Playground: Data Modification/Preprocessing And Model Simulation Tool, Marco D. Cerrato

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

There is a heavy reliance on programming when it comes to learning machine learning (ML). This often creates barriers for students and newcomers unfamiliar with coding. While the lessons you learn in the classroom provide essential foundational understanding, some technical or practical aspects of ML—such as data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model tuning—are best learned through hands-on interaction. ML Playground was developed to act as a proof-of-concept application to address this gap by offering a browser-based, graphical user interface that lets users engage with core ML workflows without writing code. Designed with educational accessibility in mind, the application allows users …

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The rise of conversational user interfaces (CUIs) powered by large language models (LLMs) is transforming human-computer interaction. This study evaluates the efficacy of LLM-powered chatbots, trained on website data, compared to browsing websites for finding information about organizations across diverse sectors. A within-subjects experiment with 165 participants was conducted, involving similar information retrieval (IR) tasks using both websites (GUIs) and chatbots (CUIs). The research questions are: (Q1) Which interface helps users find information faster: LLM chatbots or websites? (Q2) Which interface helps users find more accurate information: LLM chatbots or websites?. The findings are: (Q1) Participants found information significantly faster …

College Of Education Filemaker Extraction And End-User Database Development, Andrew Tran May 2022

College Of Education Filemaker Extraction And End-User Database Development, Andrew Tran

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The College of Education (CoE) at the California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) developed a system to keep track of both state and national accreditation requirements using FileMaker 5, a database system. This accreditation data is crucial for reporting and record-keeping for the CSU Chancellor’s Office as well as the State of California. However, the database system was developed several decades ago, and software support has long since been dropped, causing the CoE’s legacy accreditation data to be at risk of being lost should the software or hardware suffer permanent failure. The purpose of this project was to perform extraction …
